Re: QRP+ is deaf

I left my antenna on it years ago in the winter and a freak storm fried the sbl-1 and left it with almost no reception. I bought a new sbl-1 I believe from a company called Mini-Circuits. I took off the old one and seem to remember soldering in a socket to the posts of the original sbl-1 then plugging in the new sbl-1 into the socket. It worked and now I should be able to easily replace it.? I found that hack from an internet search.?

Hi Hal,
? I can relate to the aged similarities, but I forgot what they are.? ?

I hear QRP activity about sunrise, and sunset on 80 - 40, and 30 - 20 come up about mid morning or so.?
I do run a cw practice net, no q signal stuff, just check in plain language and I will match your speed,
It is a NAQCC sponsored net, on Tues and Thurs at 4pm on 7.0625. Lasts about an hour.?
Maybe see you tomorrow.?
The QRP and Plus seem to have settled into a position of elderly also. But they age gracefully. I use mine every once in a while.
The portable stuff have been updated with new kits and designs... Elecraft and PacAnt supplies the most, that I build.
And I still have a full Heath SB104a? station, that works.? And a pair of Heath twins that have the smoothest QSK ever,?
But the QRP Plus also has a very nice qsk, and I love the filter.?

Hope to see you on the net too.?

Have a great day,

Re: (Ad) [QRPPlus] QRP++ repair questions

Hi Larry et al

The QRP++ master reset was successful. Thanks Larry. Good to know that the EPROM was not corrupted.
I managed to extract the Index-1 mixer with the help of a desoldering gun. The pins of the mixer were tight with the holes and it was not easy to get it out from the board. I hope I did not damage the plated through holes. I will have to double check continuity on the solder side and perhaps bridge some connections.
The replacement level 13 double balanced mixer is already on the way. I will use a MCL SBL-1MH+ although the engineer at Synergy Microwaves told me that they were still able to supply the original custom Index-1 mixer or the same one they manufactured for SGC which is their part number SGC313011, just in case somebody else in the group had to replace the RX mixer. Unfortunately, the minimum order of Synergy Microwaves is $100, so it makes no sense to buy the "original" mixer. For all those who are not sure about the Index-1 pinout, I recommend to download the SG-2020 manual and they will realise that the RX schematic is a replica of that of the QRP+ and the drawings are clearer than those in the QRP+ manual.
The summary is as follows. Pin 1: RF IN / PINS 2,5,6,7: GND / PIN 8: LO / PINS 3,4: IF

Keep the group posted on the progress.

Re: (Ad) [QRPPlus] QRP++ repair questions

Hi Larry
?
Many thanks for your kind reply.
I will replace the battery and try do to a master reset although my best guess is that the mixer is dead and I am not sure about the IRF510 but I will replace it as well just in case (very cheap switching FET). It is a pitty that the original DL-QRP-AG PA is no more available because I thought about changing the PA in order to have a much better linear performance. I have a couple of spare 2SC1971 but I believe that ugly construction would not be the best solution. Finding a miniature linear PA kit in the range of 5 to 10W is not an easy job. I thought about a couple of different alternatives such as the QRP Labs PAs (5W or 10W designs) and the HobbyPCB driver which could be used as well as PA delivering 5W. Yes the DL-QRP AG had a new PA designed around 2008 but the dimensions of the PCB are bigger and the PA should be added ot top of the RF PCB at the top of the rig. Still thinking....
I have been looking for a SBL-1MH+ which has the same pinout and features of the original Index-1. I have found someone in Spain who has a surplus shop and seems to have them in stock.
Just for those who live in the USA, I also got a reply from Synergy Microwaves, the supplier of the "custom" double balanced mixer used in the QRP++ and later on in the SG-2020 and SG-2020ADSP (bothe designed by Bruce franklin, "father" of the QRP+) and named Index-1. The engineer Davis Lashinsky at Synergy Microwaves told me that company SGC asked them to change the name of the mixer, their current internal part number is SGC313011. They can only? supply a MOQ of 4 pieces as far as their minimum order amount is $100.
I think that the SBL-1MH+ is a better alternative. Here in EU it is possible to find it at the Funkamateur online shop??but also in ebay (but double checking if it is an original MCL part).
I will keep you posted on the progress.
