Color display QMX++ (?)
I know it's been a Han's project for many years, with many "interruptions", such as SSB on the QMX+!!! Anyway, I recall that at one time, Han's had the vision/plans for a QMX++ (I forget it's real name), that was to be an upgraded QMX+ with a color display, larger case, etc. Does anyone remember the name of this (hopefully) future radio? At last years' FDIM, when I spoke to Hans about the different radios, I nicknamed them the QMX-lite, QMX-home-edition, and QMX-Pro-edition. I recall he said his current priority was SSB (bravo, Hans!!) and that all of the QMX series radios would use the same firmware, etc. No, I AM NOT COMPLAINING, I am just trying to remember the name of the color display enhanced radio, along with the latest WAG on availability. Thanks, Roy K2RMA

Multibanding the 50w amp question
6
Hi all, I have an unbuilt 50-watt amp kit and I'm trying to figure out how to best build it. I just completed a 5-band (40-15 meters) homebrew rig (it's not a QMX, but it works!). I'd like to use the amp on multiple bands for this radio (and possibly a QMX). I am thinking of just building the amp for the highest band I need and adding a switchable external low-pass filter. But I had a question: obviously the output of the amp won't be as large on higher bands. However, if I build the amp for 15 meters and transmit on say 40 meters (with a 40 meter external low-pass filter) should I still similar output as I would get if I built the amp for 40 meters, or would there be a significant sacrifice running though the 15 meter filter first? I'm sure some of you have experience trying this out. Thank you! 72, Sam WN5C

QMX SSB and non-FSK digimodes
3
Hello, I am testing ARIM + ARDOP between QMX+dummy load and TS590+normal antenna. I can hear both signals both ways very well. ARDOP listening to QMX can decode all frames. ARDOP on TS590 cannot receive a single frame sent via QMX. QMX mode is set to DIGI. I think I should rather use USB, right? Jindra

SSB Mike wiring?
4
Hello! Browsing the QRP-labs website, I was excited to find that Hans has released beta SSB software. I immediately loaded it into my QMX+. After a few false starts, it was making power, using a Baofeng microphone from my UbitxV6. I did have to make an adaptor becuause the tip/Ring wiring is opposite from my other radios. The mic does behave well in the hardware microphone test. I piped the output into my FTDX10 with a bunch of attenuation: a 30dB 500W Bird, then two 20dB inline attenuators, then 18dB inside the '10. It's recognizably SSB. Once I got it attenuated enough so it wasn't overloading the radio, it looked nice & clean on the bandscope. Alas, with 3W output, I probably won't be making many SSB QSO's. What I need is to patch it into my homebrew 1kW linear. It wouldn't drive the linear to full output, but it would make 300W or so, enough to play. To do that, I need the QMX+ to output a PTT signal and also a 4-bit Yaesu band code. I did buy the "dev" kit for the QMX+, it's in my junque somewhere. But - what about the software? Can't output that 4-bit code without software. Hans did promise some sort of BASIC interpreter for the QMX, is there a timeline for that? Can't hack the existing software because it's closed source & encrypted. I suppose I could put another CPU in the box, and patch into the band-choosing lines, but what a waste - there's a perfectly good CPU in there already. Which surely knows what band it's on. - Jerry, KF6VB

Qmx deaf on 20 meter band
2
Hello my QMX after installing the latest version of the beta software for SSB has become completely deaf on 20 meter band. In transmissions everything is ok, the other band are ok also in reception- (it's the 80/20 meter Qmx). I tried to install the official version 1_00_027 again but nothing changes. What can I try to do? Any idea ? 73 And IW0HK -- Andrea Borgnino IW0HK http://www.mediasuk.org/iw0hk http://www.mediasuk.org/archive

QSX project retirement
37
Hi all I hereby officially retire the QSX project http://qrp-labs.com/qsx which was started in 2018 and aimed to provide a low cost, high performance multi-band multi-mode QRP transceiver. QSX was an ambitious project, probably TOO ambitious. I did probably bite off more than I could chew. As a result of publicity around the project it also caused a lot of pressure and stress. But things developed regardless; and it was a happy day when I decided to take a break from it, and put it on the shelf for a while while I continued with other developments. Numerous new kits came about including the QCX 50W PA, then the QCX+, QCX-mini, QDX, QMX and QMX+. Many people noticed and commented that many of these new kits took steps towards my original goals for QSX. I was getting there, step by step. Now with the implementation of SSB and CESSB in QMX+, there is at least a 95% overlap between the planned functionality of QSX and the planned/delivered functionality of QMX+. In many ways QMX+ surpasses the QSX plan in features and performance, and does so at a lower price ($125 compared to my $150 target for QSX, both without enclosure). I am measuring for example, IMD -40 dB PEP two-tone test results in QMX+ on 40m; that compares to -30 dB PEP measured on the 10W Linear module of a QSX, -35 dB PEP for Elecraft K3S (ARRL lab measurement in QST review) and -36 dB PEP for Elecraft KX2 (ARRL lab measurement in QST review). Of course two-tone testing isn't everything but as a single number comparison point, it's not a bad indication. So we'll continue and focus on QMX/QMX+ firmware development. And consign QSX to history, with respect to the ambition, innovation and ongoing development which it inspired, and whose end result is now the QMX-series. 73 Hans G0UPL http://qrp-labs.com https://www.buymeacoffee.com/g0upl

Board revision
9
Hi, I've just ordered a QMX+. I want to print the assembly manual out. I'm assuming it'll be a Rev 3 PCB but I'm wondering if I should wait until the kit arrives to be sure and not 'waste' paper and ink? Thanks Mike

Power Output
8
Hi all I have just built and finished my first QMX+ and it worked first time well impressed. Just one question on the power output which I am measuring into a dummy load. On 160m I am getting 7.2w, 80m 7.3w, 60m 6.5w, 40m 5.6w, 30m 5.5w, 20m 5.2w, 17m 4w, 15m 4.7w, 12m 2.8, 10m 3.5w 6m 2.8w so dropping from 7.2w to 2.8w is there any way I can “smooth” this out a little, drop 160m down and increase 6m ??? Thanks For any pointers Paul G0HEU

Enclosure wrong size
9
I either got the wrong enclosure or the wrong main board for a QCX+. The board is much wider than the enclosure. There is a line on the board which is the size the board should have been, but nothing mentioned about cutting the board to make it fit. Besides I don't have the tools to cut it. Instructions say it should slide right into the enclosure. Anyone else experienced this. Other than one capacitor missing this is the only problem so far. ++

#QMX #SSB #calibration A note about spurious PA power after IMD optimization on a band is over
4
#qmx
#ssb
#calibration
I don't know if any of you has noticed anything similar: while performing the SSB calibration on a band-by-band basis (using the "O" option) I noticed that at the end of the USB/LSB IMD Optimization step of each band, the power out is not put back to zero. I read between 0.5W and 1.2-1.5W on some bands, and again, this is after the IMD optimisation has ended for that band. If I CTRL+Q, then power is reset back to zero. If I get back into calibration, power is still zero. If I do calibrate another band (still with 'O') , the calibration succeeds but at the end the PA is not shut down completely. Now, I think this is hardly enough to put the finals under any substantial strain, if it stays like that for a couple of minutes at most. But I wonder if the few cases of fellows who "left the calibration running and went out for a walk" and then found their finals toast could not be due just to this glitch, i.e., the PA remaining keyed for several minutes, even at lower-than-max power, which might be enough to cook them up, under certain constraints. Has anyone else noticed this? I guess a consistent set of measures of this effect (if it is not just in my QMX+ specimen) might help Hans pin-pointing the issue when he is back from vacation. Hope this helps. 72/73 de Enzo M0KTZ

QMX+ loses audio.
3
After a factory reset my QMX+ runs fine for hours running wspr. If I attempt to change parameters through the front panel...turn on clock...dot delim etc it will lose audio connectivity to wsjt and through headphones. Factory reset and reboot wsjt does restore things back to normal. Perhaps I should not try to customise anything whilst under control of WSJT?

QMX+ Beacon mode
Decided that seeing I have the GPS installed, to revisit beacon mode. Setup all the parameters including frequency 14097.200. Well it seems to Beacon OK...I can see that it is transmitting. Problem is ...it is not on 14097.2....in fact I have no idea if it is even on 20m. Bit of a glitch here ? de VK6XT

QMX work with PA
2
Hello Hans! My QMX works great with 1_01_003 firmware. I've calibrated it and SSB reports are very good. Thanks! Few problems: 1. Wattmeter indicator looks like very slowly responding to actual power in antenna. As if it is averaging for couple of seconds... 2. When I use my usual PA with 1.3 input SWR (measured with NanoVNA) QMX tends to stop transmitting in several seconds due to SWR Protection. And SWR meter displays some big figures which do not exist in reality (checked with my standard SDR transiver and NanoVNA). 3. Nothing changes on PTT output during TX. 5V stays on the ring and 0V on the tip.
