Surprising invoice from FedEx

My QMX kit arrived without any extra payment in the UK a couple of months ago. So I was surprised to get a bill from FedEx this morning for ?7.76 that covers IMPORT R FROM:SUMMERS ...........?2.66 VT + ?4.25 DPF 01 + ?6.91 NET.

I have no idea what this all means, and am surprised that QRP Labs don't mention possible extra payments.

It's not much to pay for an excellent service, so no problem, but it would be nice to have known.

Welcome to the world of FedEx shipping. The charges are nothing to do with QRP Labs. The kits are shipped from Turkey so VAT and FedEx handling? charges will apply.?

Pick DHL in future. A little more expensive but they seem to take care of the VAT aspect for you (at least that's my experience).

Hi Tony

It's here on the Terms & Conditions page, specifically:

3. Taxes, VAT, Sales Tax:?In some countries sales tax (VAT) is payable on import. QRP Labs is not EU IOSS registered (which is a much too heavy and expensive administrative overhead for small businesses). Be aware that your purchase at the QRP Labs shop does not include sales tax (VAT) and your country's post office or the shipper may assess you for tax and administration charges. QRP Labs does endeavor to ensure to the best of our ability, that your taxes will be minimal or zero. However ultimately any taxes are your responsibility as the purchaser.

Taxes are a major menace of the modern world.?

I agree with Danny that DHL appear to handle any import taxes if they are due, more smoothly than FedEx.?

Tony,

that sounds like a bargain to me, lol.

DHL charged me a total of 23€ for VAT + service fee.

VAT was roughly 8€, so guess how much the service fee was.

The Canadian FedEx must be more efficient than back in Blighty. I received my QMX last friday, and got my invoice yesterday. I don't mind though, as I don't think those 330uH inductors could survive shipping by postal service - lol

My QMX is up and running FB, despite having a senior's moment when installing a pin header socket. Nothing a little solder wick couldn't fix...

Thanks Hans!

Yeah, DHL's minimum "customs processing" fee in Germany is €14.88 (about $16 -- more than the actual shipping cost of $15 something). So, all in, it cost about $32 for shipping from Turkey to Germany using DHL. VAT was about $10 (actually, quite reasonable, all things considered).

There used to be an option to use the normal postal service to ship to Germany, but I didn't see that option this time. The customs processing fee for that is "only" about $7.

Shippers' fees in Germany are brutal, and it adds insult to injury when they send these belated bills long after the fact.

I've bought a few (cough cough) kits from qrp-labs and have only had the extra invoice once. It was for a little over ?7. I did the usual and popped it somewhere safe... A few weeks later a reminder arrived with another?10(ish) "admin" added for good measure and a note that it was now being passed to a debt collector! I phoned up and paid before things escalated.?

Lesson learned: It's a charge that you ARE liable for and the Borg will have their blood one way or another. Best to pay the initial few ?'s fairly smartish.

Cheers,?

Hi Hans,

I hope that given the success of QMX and all other products you will be reconsidering ?EU IOSS registration.
It will be a pain on your side but this will alleviate all your European customer!

Hello Simone
?
I hope that given the success of QMX and all other products you will be reconsidering ?EU IOSS registration.
It will be a pain on your side but this will alleviate all your European customer!

At the current time I am not considering EU IOSS registration. Apart from me being fundamentally opposed to the whole concept, according to my analysis it would substantially increase both my costs (and hence the kit prices) as well as the amount of taxes and fees paid by the average customer.?

In the interests of adding my experience to the mix, I received a similar invoice from Fedex when my QMX arrived in Canada a few weeks ago.? While you cannot dispute the import taxes, the disbursement fee and taxes on the disbursement fee are not legal unless Fedex has express authorization to charge for the service first.? The British Columbia Business Practices and Consumer Protection Act Section 12(1) prohibits unsolicited services without express acknowledgement from the consumer.? Unless Fedex asked you ahead of time if they could provide the service (paying import taxes for you), then they cannot legally charge you.?
?
I successfully disputed the fee by quoting the legislation above and it was removed from my invoice.? I hope this helps anyone interacting with Fedex in the future.

Oh, didn't know that. Here in France I was nicked 23 euros for duty (ouch!) by FedEx before they would release my QMX kit. I have to say it puts me off buying from Hans for a while until I get to visit the UK and have my stuff shipped there and pay 7 quirt instead.?

Hi all

Note that thankfully none of the below discussion applies to US customers, who account for more than 50% of QRP Labs' business. No US customers pay any import taxes and I don't think there is any difference between DHL Express and FedEx service generally in US. Both work equally well and FedEx is cheaper.?

Tuck: I don't live in UK, and kits aren't shipped from UK... so visiting UK isn't going to help.?

John: I suspect FedEx did not break any laws. They probably considered all that way in advance. There is always loads of small print and laws have exceptions and other laws that apply, things that apply by implication in some circumstances, blah blah. But, there's being right, being?wrong, and operating a business. In common with many other businesses, "operating a business" is what matters - a.k.a. making money. If it's cheaper for them to waive the charges than it is for them to keep arguing with you about it, then it is a good business decision for them to approve your dispute.?

Generally: others may wish to comment on their experiences - and bear in mind, there is lots of variation from country to country - but it is my impression that the administrative fees applied by TNT/FedEx are more than DHL Express. DHL Express is more expensive at first sight, than TNT/FedEx. But *if* the admin fees of DHL Express are lower, then overall DHL Express could work out cheapest. From my personal experience as an individual here in Turkey, I have received packages effortlessly by DHL Express, with simply a minimal tax fee to pay by an internet link and no administration fee; but I cannot say for sure how this experience would transfer to other countries.

Speaking for QRP Labs: I must say that when I consider business risks to QRP Labs' future, the #1 risk in my eyes is taxes and regulations. NOT cloning, NOT Far East cheap competition, NOT semiconductor crisis component shortages. I hate taxes and regulations.?

Trust me, you'll pay VAT and handling charges in the UK too if you have stuff shipped by FedEx.
?
And don't ignore them as they'll send ?5 to a debt collection agency. Ask me how I know.?
?
These charges will apply regardless of who you buy from if the seller is outside the EU/EEA. It is not a QRP Labs charge and there is nothing Hans can really do to mitigate them.

Makes me awfully glad to be tucked away in New Zealand where there's no import fees or tarrifs on anything under 1000nzd (618usd)

Nice to read a quote from Robert A. Heinlein's Novel, "Time Enough for Love".?

I shouldn't say this non a qrp-labs forum, but I ordered a Venus sw-3b.? When the customs forms were completed they made a mistake and as such calculated the customs duty to be double what it was. Over ?100 on a ?180 radio.... they would not release the radio to me unless I paid the fee. Over a year later I'm still fighting with them to get my money back. They agreed that it was a mistake at their end but will only offer a credit against my account... like I import things every day... for the life of me I can't get fedex to issue an actual refund.?
Hate fedex with a passion. Dhl only for me.?

Well my QMX arrived here in Montana, last spring, I was anticipating having to pay some additional funds to Fed Ex, but next to my prize possession from QRP Laps on the front porch, was $4.50 in quarters, still have no clue as to that mystery, Hi Hi!

John, they accidentally left G3OVH¡¯s tax payment on your porch.
