Simple and very tiny mic for the QMX. #qmx #ssb

Here's the tiny mic that I've been using with my (tr)USDX and now the QMX. It's really simple to put together - I took an old mobile phone headphone that had an in-line mic and push-switch and simply removed the headphones and re-wired the switch and mic element as per the QMX/(tr)USDX specs. It works surprisingly well and weighs next to nothing.... Perfect for SOTA etc.?

( link, for when the in-line image disappears: )

Awesome Ronan.? I put a similar one together today.? A very easy mic. to make.

I try to repurpose that stuff all the time. Did it have that ribbon wire in it? Thats the wire with laquered ribbon wrapped on some kind of poly thread that's? impossible to solder; found in most ear bud/mic sets.
?
If so how do you solder that stuff?

Hi Bryan,?
It uses very fine multi-stranded enameled copper wire which is pretty easy to work with. You just need to hold the wetted iron to it long enough for the enamel to burn away. I set the temp to about 380°C.

There is another type of wire that has tinselled flat-ish strands. That may be what you're referring to. It was used in some headphone cables.? That's a pig to work with and probably best replaced with something less troublesome.

Cheers,?

If it's the coiled wire like in some telephone cords, I managed to solder it. Just don't expect it to look pretty, because the solder doesn't want to stick to the poly cord for some reason. Anyway, just getting a messy solder joint does seem to work just fine.?

I burn the end coating off with a lighter, then clean off the black carbon coating with a bit of solvent and coat with flux before soldering.

Thank you Ronan. I could not remember what it was called.? Tinsel wire. YUK!
Even if you do manage to get that stuff soldered,? it will likely not hold up to any strain whatsoever.?
