Running a QCX Transceiver with a QLG1 GPS Unit

All,

Anybody know what the setup needs to be to allow a QLG1 GPS unit to work with the QCX Transceiver so that when the QLG1 is plugged into the QCX GPS header the transceiver doesn't start immediately sending CW garbage.? The GPS modules shares the same Microprocessor pins as the QLG1, so there must be a menu item that tells the Microprocessor that GPS disciplining is desired and to use those inputs from the data and pulse per second lines as inputs, not the paddle lines.

I've been through the manual several times but can't find the required info to make the above work.? This old guy needs help! :-)

Hi Jim

Just set "6.1 Beacon" to "ON". This means the QCX will power up in beacon mode, and start operating as a beacon in whatever mode you configured (CW or WSPR), with the parameters you configured it to operate with. GPS frequency discipline is done automatically at the end of a WSPR transmission. Or manually in menu item "8.11 Cal ref. osc".?

There is not a way to have automatic GPS discipline operating from startup without using WSPR beacon mode. But if you want, you could always set "4.7 Practice" in the keyer menu to "ON", which would cause the QCX to look like it is transmitting a beacon message but it is really doing everything EXCEPT generating the actual RF output.?

Hans,

Thanks for the info!? I'll go try it now and report back later.

Hans and group,

Yep, the above worked a treat.? Put the rig in Beacon mode and Keyer to Practice and let it rip.? Now the crystal frequencies are known and compensated.? Thanks for the help!

PS...I'm working on the "Big Click" problem.? I need to know which line from the CPU is Tx so I can look at the Rx - Tx timing.? I think the shunt audio switch needs to be a series switch in line with the audio, or maybe one of each like I used in the MagicBox design.? Will keep you posted.

PSS,? Hans, are you game to try some other Rx-Tx timings in the firmware?

Hi Jim

Which firmware version do you have? There was a significant improvement in Tx/Rx noise after the initial firmware version.?

I'm surprised you have a big click. On all my versions here I operated Full QSK without any objectionable click. The timing ought to be fine.?

The circuit diagram shows the TX signals from the processor and the manual explains what is happening. After key-up there is a delay while the key-shaping transistor shuts down the RF envelope. Then the processor opens the TxRx switch and reconfigures the synthesizers for Receive. A further hardware-implemented delay until the mute switch MOSFET is turned off.

If you have AVR programming tools then I'd be very happy to work with you on varying the timing. It would be great to fix any specific problem you have particular to your kit, or find any improvements which could be made to the kit hardware or firmware that could benefit all QCX owners. Let's take it to private email!
