QSX Stuck in Firmware Update Mode

When I power up my QDX, it's in Firmware Update mode. (LED flashing ~5Hz). The QDX drive appears on my Mac, but no files appear in the folder. I then drag the 1_05.QDX file to the folder and EEPROM.QDX suddenly appears as well. The LED starts flashing more rapidly, suggesting the firmware update is underway. After a bit, the LED turns solid red and the QDX seems to work.

However, when I then turn the QDX off and back on, it re-enters firmware-update mode. Powering off/on again and it's still in update mode. So the only way I can get out of update mode is to go through the update procedure each time I power up. QDX pcb rev 4.?

Low power voltage? Low current limit on the power supply?

Yes, must be the PSU or faulty QDX processor memory.

Using a well-regulated power supply. Rock-solid 9vdc and plenty of current. Drawing 60ma at rest.

Maybe the device never got the initial load of the firmware from the "factory".? Stuff happens.

Just a guess, but maybe there's a momentary loss of power such as noisy/dirty switch contacts that causes QDX to enter F/W upgrade mode? Try connecting everything but plug PS into wall socket last?

Is the QDX power socket solidly soldered on the PC board?

Hope it helps!

This seems low; the three I have, all 9V, idle around 140mA.

Definitely low. Something basic is not right. I would send a support request to Hans via the website.

Sounds like the CPU memory isn¡¯t surviving a power cycle, probably not something Hans tests for, as it should be pretty unlikely. I think this is the second one I¡¯ve heard of on this list.

Hans will make it right!

Is the output of IC1 at the correct 3.3v?

Thanks, Al. I don't think that's the problem. Other aspects of the QDX seem to be working well. I can use telnet and do other things.

Please ignore this thread and my others. Hans has helped me figure out all my problems, I think. The EEPROM is missing from the PCB! Thanks for all your help and advice. I've learned a lot along the way.

Well, that will sure cause a problem!? Glad it's figured out.
