QMX PS Board - Slight Damage
Just noticed that, while removing the power supply boards from the surrounding "stuff", I managed to do a tiny bit of damage. The board in question is the one with two of the BA6D1R MOSFETs and is shaped kind of like the letter "Z". The damage is at the bottom left corner where there is a round mounting hole. I snapped off 2 mm of the board right at that corner, leaving a gap there. Is this going to be a problem? Is there circuitry that goes around the extreme outer edge of the board at that point?

Hi all The manual contains images of all the traces.? There aren't any traces in that corner. So everything is OK. Another common question on the SMPS is what happens if you chip off a bit of the ferrite hat of the 330uH inductor, which is very easily done. Answer: nothing. Works fine, proceed regardless.? 73 Hans G0UPL On Thu, Jan 11, 2024, 7:15?PM <oh2jxa@...> wrote: Hi Jim, |
Hans & Igor - thanks for the replies! I got brave last night and applied power. No smoke, flames, or any obnoxious burning smell! Unfortunately, no RF output, either. Got a 50 ohm dummy load connected. I instantly get the SWR protection ¡°S¡± on the display when I send a CW character. Ran putty and did the hardware tests - looks OK, but I need to revisit and pay more attention to the transmitter part of it. All seems to work except no RF. Hmmmmm¡..

Jim, look closely at the connections on the SWR transformer.? I've found they are the most difficult to get a good looking (and working!)? connections at those points, especially the one which goes to the ground plane.? Besides needing a lot of heat they are close to other surface mount components.? But this area is consistent with what you are seeing.
Good Luck, 73? Bruce KG8IW |
Bruce - thanks for the tip. I must have my dunce hat on, but nowhere can I find QMX circuit descriptions. And that, in turn, means I¡¯ve no idea what component is the SWR transformer. I¡¯ve looked in both the assembly and operating manuals, but I¡¯m at a loss to identify what components do what function. I could swear that I¡¯ve seen something like that before, but where¡?
