QMX Not Responding

If you can still access the QMX then just re-create the QMX folder. No need to scrap it.?

Plug the QMX into a 12v supply and turn it on, plug it into a USB port on your computer and you should see it as a storage device.

Open it up and you'll just see a blank folder. Right click in the blank folder and some menu options will come up - click New and name the folder QMX.

Then download, unzip and copy across the firmware as others have said.?

No videos are really needed, the steps are very clear in the manual if you read them.?

Note I made exactly the same mistake as you and wondered why I had an apparently dead QMX until I read those last few steps in the manual.?

You say in an earlier post that you deleted the folder on the QMX "drive", and since then you can no longer see the QMX as a device, if I read it correctly.
There is a way to force the QMX into firmware update mode by adding a jumper wire. See the operation manual Section 7. I?haven't had any problems with mine and therefore not needed to try this, maybe others more computer savvy than me can advise on this method.

Habe you tried another USB cable and other USB ports on your computer??

See the operation manual Section 7
I see the firmware installation in section 2.32 of the Assembly manual.

To me it seems clearly written, can even be printed out and each step ticked.

I always prefer good written instructions. Even if a good video is found it never goes at the speed you do, pausing, going back many times is a real pain.

Note the way to force bootloader mode. A loop of wire will usually be good enough. Make sure it is secure and not touching anything before applying power.

Hi Mike,
as pointed out by Rowan QMX should show up like a USB stick to your computer. I would not understand you could delete it.
On my new QDX the QMX Drive was complete empty on initial start (no EEPROM file yet).
Just copy the unziped FW file made the device to install it.
To make the virtual QMX virtual device appear on initial start: if no FW yet it should always start in FW Update mode, no jump wire needed.
Maybe I have pressed the left encoder button (can not recall any more) to turn QMX up.

IF the QMX device is not appearing (after power up (maybe) left encoder button press), this can have different reasons.
Some people reported (on Rev 1) board issues with USB-C <--> USB-C cables. Maybe you can try using a USB-A <--> USB-C cable?
Just if you have another PC available you can try it.

As the documentation advice the initial power up after building the kit can be little critical as this is moment of truth if you soldering was successful. :-)
As you did not had current limiting variable power supply there is little higher chance to toast your QMX, but lets assume it's still alive.
Can you measure current consumption on power up? You should not see more than 200 mA and more than 90mA.

Hope this helps.

Brian--

So sorry to hear that! :-( My first QMX was partially working, then I must've done something (don't know what) to fry the MCU. My second was more successful, but I ended up sending it to Jeff Moore to resolve some arcane issues. (He does very good, and reasonably priced work, BTW!)

Why did you decide to put it into the scrap bin? The MCU is about the only part that isn't fixable (yet), and Hans was looking at how to make that available... I'm sure he has other priorities to deal with first! (Do you know it's the MCU?)

Paul,

The qmx directory no longer exists. There was something that went wrong in the initial power up. I did not have a variable power supply or the equivalent available so I used a 12 v cell phone battery supply.

?The qmx is now in the scrap bin.

Thank you for taking your time to clarify the procedure. I wish there was a video that shows the power up of a newly completed qmx. I will keep your responses and use them as a guide if I build another qmx. They give an accurate outline of the power up process.

Thank You
Brian

Danny--?

I think he's saying there's no QMX device when he connects the USB. That's a different kind of problem.

Well I seem to have a similar problem as the other person.
Built the Low Band QMX from the kit, tested with a current limited PSU at 7V then at 12V. No smoke or whatever.
Downloaded and unzipped the file to the PC.
with the 12V supply to the QMX connected it to the PC expecting to see it connected as a flash drive.
But got nothing, no connection to the PC. Found and tried with another C type USB cable, same result. PC recognises USB sticks and external storage device via USB.
Had a look at the underside of the USB socket on the main board, it looks OK but didn't fancy trying to resolder those very small connections!
I suspect its either that USB socket or one of the two power modules.
What else could I look for and what problems might there be on the psu modules? I remember that I initially had some problems soldering the headers to those boards..
Any advice gratefully received

Hi Ray,?

You don't mention it in your post.?

Did you turn the radio on by pressing the left hand encoder button?
The radio doesn't visually respond to that, but the computer should then recognise it and bring up the "USB drive".

Ray,?
You don't mention if it's a Rev1 or Rev 2 QMX and you don't mention the computer and its USB port. If it's a USB C port on the computer and a Rev1, the computer might not recognize the QMX.?

Also, when USB-C fails (Rev 1 board, fixed in Rev 2?) try inverting the USB-C plug (swap top and bottom). Only an issue when it's a "C" connector on both ends of the cable.

Finally, make sure it's a data cable and not "power-only".

Some USB cables are power only, not all are power and data. I've been caught with this before.

I have a similar problem with my Rev 2 QMX low Band i have just completed. Its working fine but I cannot connect to it using my HP2133 laptop running Window 7 Pro ( 32 bit) . It just wont connect or gives 'an unrecognised USB device' error message depending on which way the USB connector is plugged into the QMX.? The cable works fine on my Windows 10 PC, so the cable is OK, which is how I installed the firmware and checked the hardware using the builtin tools. I tried all combinations of powering up QMX after cable installed etc but no connection

I dont have any 5k1 resistors fitted and I'm wondering if the lack of these is causing the connection problem for this older PC?? How accurate do the resistors have to be? I have some small through hole resistors? that are 4K7. Would they do?

Am really pleased with the kit. It worked first time and gives 5W on 40m from a 11.1 3 cell LiPo battery , Bit down on 20M confirmed by the LPF scans ( needs at turn off the inductor ) but am really impressed with the capabilities of this little box.

I don't think the radio is trashed.? It sounds like you accidentally deleted the drive mount point, meaning that Windows doesn't think you want to see it and isn't showing it.

Can you plug the radio in, open the Windows Recycle Bin and right click on the QMX file and see if you can restore it?? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PJ4grwFZnks?

If that doesn't work, can you right click on the Windows icon in the start bar and click Disk Management.? There should be a small hard disk (NOT your Windows drive, so not C:)? Right click on it and Change the drive letter to Z:.? It should re-appear.? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bpGjh67H6DI

Then you can unzip the firmware binary file and copy it in to the folder.

Hi Paul,
so far as I know you need a special driver for Windows 7 but not for W 10.
I've found this anywhere on QRP-Lab.com but dont ask me where.
But I know this was also true for QDX and there is a link to in the QDX operation manual. Pleas scroll down to "Windows 7/8 serial driver".

Thanks Ludwig,
I did wonder if there was a driver needed. I’ll search the QDX manual.

Hi Ludwig,
Cracked it. Following the links in the QDX manual got me the driver file, but I also needed the post mentioned in the QDX manual on how to install the driver on Win 7 as it wasn’t recognised automatically.

Its working fine now. Much appreciated.
