QMX+ L501 Damaged

I plan to start the build anyways. Worth replacing?

Hi Joshua

The ferrite top of that inductor is very delicate and often we see damage in transit. It's not a problem, as long as the wires aren't broken there will not be any noticeable or significant effect on operation. So proceed!

One of the QRP Lab kits that I built had a similar problem and there were no perceivable issues with the operation of the unit.

I just received the QMX+ and L501 was broken. Not just the top but also the bobbin that is wrapped with the wire. One of the connections is also broken. I am attempting to replace the inductor and have applied kapton tape to the components around it and am heating the base of the inductor to 400C with a fine point air heat gun. I am not having success removing it and just want to make sure it is not glued to the board? Not likely but, needed to check. Any advice on how to remove L501.

Thank You

AB4ER?

Hi Joe,

Have you tried using two soldering irons as a "tweezer," with one on each of the solder pads of the inductor?

Just a suggestion.

Hadn't tried that but will. Thank you for the suggestion.

Had exactly the same piece broken on my QMX+. The bobbin part holding the winding is intact, the coil looks Ok and the connections are fine so I doubt it will cause any problem. ?Needs a bit more packing TLC somewhere along the line.
