QDX LED Flashing Continuously #qdx

I just finished building my QDX (version 4). Built for 9vdc. Connected USB to my iMac. On power-up, the LED flashes continuously, about 5Hz. No device appears in the WSJT-X Audio Input pulldown. When I unplug the USB cable, I get "Disk Not Ejected Properly" suggesting Mac OS thinks this is a disk drive. I don't see any documentation about a continuously flashing LED. What might this mean?

Doug,

I believe that continuous flashing means that the QDX is in firmware update mode (flash drive). ?Turn off power and turn on again. ?It should flash for several seconds and then the led should stay on without flashing.

Thanks, Milt. I've tried that few times. Doesn't seem to work. Still flashes continuously.

One other clue: QDX does appear as an external disk drive in the Mac OS Finder. But unlike the documentation, I don't see the EPROM or firmware files. The drive appears a empty. The drive appears as a 4MB MS-DOS FAT16 disk.

Doug,

Is it possible that the power supply is “hiccuping” during turn on?. ?This would make the QDX think that you are trying to go into firmware update mode. ??

Have you tried turning on the power supply with the QDX disconnected, and then connect the QDX after the supply has completely settled?

Interesting thought, Milt.

I decided to try a good, trusty bench supply set to exactly 9vdc. Very clean output. No change, unfortunately.

Problem solved! The QDX was simply demanding a firmware update and wouldn't get out of that mode. I downloaded the latest firmware, dragged it to the QDX "drive" and the firmware update started on its own. Once that was done, things came to life!

Glad you got it figured out.

Well, I sort of figured it out. I can go through the firmware update process. At least, I *think* it's updating. After that, it seems to be operating normally. But whenever I power it up, it goes into firmware-update mode. I can't get it out of that mode unless I go through the update process. Yes, I've tried to remove and restore the power. I really don't want to have to install firmware every time up power up the rig!
