How to ground QDX? #qdx #grounding

Hi everybody,
did anybody try to connect QDX to ground? What is the best practice? I have Rev3 - so, I could use the PTT connector (I do not use PA) and the ground in it. Can anybody offer anything better?

Milo?

Mine is connected to ground by the antenna ground.
And by the ground of the power supply.

I also connect the metal case to ground, it is not normally connected anywhere.

Best point is the antenna connector for grounding.

Welcome back Allison.? It is good to see a posting from you.

Milo?,
the QDX case panels are all anodised and so are insulated from each other and from the pcb. I had to sandpaper all the jointing surfaces to ensure they have electrical connection and solder the star washer on the BNC antenna connector to the pcb so it makes contact with the inside of the assembled case. Some did report electrostatic discharge problems before this was done. THEN, you can ground the QDX by a lead to a solder tag to one of the panel screws or from the BNC connector.

Hi Ken and everybody,
Thanks for your ideas. I have learnt something new.

Hi,
@Ken: I did it as you said, tnx.
@Allison: I agree - it would be the best to ground QDX as near to the BNC connector as possible. But, how to do it? What would you recommend?

How about a crocodile clip?

If in a hurry I just wrap a wire around the connector.?

If the connector is physically grounded to the case then I make up a bolt
with a thumbscrew or wing nut for the connection and drill the case for it.

If the case is anodizes or painted a small area needs to be scraped on
the inside to insure a solid connection.

While IME the case needs to be grounded to avoid the 'static charge reset' issue, the grounding of the case just needs to be short in relation to the RF wavelength, so grounding the case and using one of the back case screws is probably good enough.

Hi all

Has anyone seen a significant fall in noise / increase in received SNR on the waterfall after grounding the case of a QDX?
I am mindful of the effort Ken G4APB writes about to ensure a good connection between each of the panels. Worthwhile?

I did the case mods that Ken has suggested and noticed a significant decrease in base noise level in the receivers of my QDX and my QCXs.? My radios are all grounded through the antenna connectors to the the tuner which has an earth ground wire attached going to copper stake in the outside my shack. I plan to improve on that with radials so I can use my balanced dipole as a top loaded Marconi.

Hugh,

No, because all mine are grounded:-)
It seems silly not to ground a metal case.
A few have said they had some sort of malfunction, I forget exactly what but they said it was cured by grounding.
