Bench power supply for QDX, QMX etc

 

I'm a bit of a newb.

What bench power supply would you recommend for building kits like the QDX and QMX?

I would prefer to buy a new product (vs used) and if possible like to keep the price to $150US or less.

There are MANY power supplies in this range;? it is hard for me to compare.

If anybody has a suggestion please reply!

I have been using the?Korad KD3005D for years now. It has all you need for a nice price (Euro 59) and with a real transformer in it (no switch mode power supply).?

0-30V / 0-5A incl curent linit.?
Digital read out and remembers the settings between power cycles.?

Use what you have and filter it with a Drok buck boost device for $16 USD.?

I use batteries, SLA or Lithium, or shack supply but run it though the Drok first.

Remember that each time you turn it on you need to check and possibly readjust the Drok to 12 volts. It doesn¡¯t have a memory. At least that is my take on it. I¡¯ve only been using it for a week. I have a bunch of 7 A SLAs and after a few uses are down to 12 volts. Be careful of the Lithiums or the 13.8 v shack supply.?

It works for me.

Thank you Hans. ?But then again, what QRP Labs kit isn¡¯t a beautiful thing in the kit and/or assembled. I have assembled many of Hans kits since he began production.?

I would affirm Lex's recommendation of the Korad supply.? I got it as a Christmas present from my wife in 2022, and I find it meets all the requirements.? It is also available on Amazon for us US-based Hams:


It could be available for a lower price on one of the other sales sites.? A quick check showed a high cost of shipping that made Amazon the least expensive for Prime members.

The first suppl I bought a Tekpower TP3005T works fine except when used my QCX. The fan in the power supply changes speed at the one amp level and the affect is when you key the unit the fan goes to high speed. I am a new cw operator and it is very distracting. I am now using a astron supply which is not variable but is easier to use.
 

I bought a Korad KA3005P in 2013 from SRA-Solder. They currently have the KD3005D for $85 with free shipping. Same price as Amazon, if you have Prime. I like the digital setting the KA-series has rather than the knobs of the KD-series.?
