Has anyone lost a balloon ?

haha... had the same thought.
"...add antennas and solar cells, a balloon and you're ready to go..."
I wonder who's balloon it might be?

A balloon is not a great platform for spying... it does not go where you want it to go, and is at the mercy of the jet stream. This one is visible from the ground so not very stealthy.? And if they could roll down the window of the fighter jet, a few shots from a bb gun would get it to leak slowly and gently bring it down gently so the government could examine the secret spy equipment.?? The media loves these stories. Dave VE3KCL

Some stories claim that you can 'steer' a balloon by changing altitude (without going in to sufficient detail about how that might be done), while not actually claiming that _this_ balloon has those capabilities.
Occam's Razor says it was for local Chinese use and got out of hand, drifted away, or they are poking the US to see how we'll respond.
Note that the 'air traffic control flight hold' wasn't because of the balloon, it was because they were scrambling fighters to go check it out.
Wonder what the news cycle is trying to distract us from this time?

Think of this, not as a balloon, but as a blimp. ?It apparently went to Montana and "parked" there for several days, and is on the move again. ?It's apparently maintaining a uniform altitude. ?And, the military is worried about debris?? ?The same military that can leave a half million pounds of broken equipment and MRE boxes anyplace they post troops?? ?Like many things, we are being allowed a mere glimpse into the truth here. ?

But in a statement, China's foreign ministry said it was used for "mainly meteorological" purposes.
Mainly meteorological ?
Yeah right ;-)

It is when all that free space between wifi networks can easily be heard. 10-100mw of 2.4GHz in free space goes a long way. ? -- - 73 de Andy -

It doesn't appear to be sending its maidenhead grid to Hans' site. Maybe it has the six character grid bug :-)

There is an outcry to shoot it down, I hope they capture it.? Maybe a nano-sized hole made by a laser would do it.? In all honesty, it's not any worse than an orbiting?spy satellite.

The big outcry is being made by national security heads who failed to intercept it before it entered our airspace.

Heard on the news the United Stated spends 850 Billion on Defense budget every year, and we are going to let a Chinese Airship meander around our country?? Tables turned you know china would shoot down our dirigible or even jet aircraft with ZERO warning. But sure, believe what chiner says, that it’s a “wayward scientific experiment”. That worked well when we believed the Taliban as they controlled checkpoints in Afghanistan. ?

I'd like to see the Air Force poke a few holes in it and after it lands, see what it was actually doing. Personally, I think it was delivering paychecks to Joe and Hunter...but that's just a guess.

Maybe after the combined armed forces is able to create a leak in the balloon envelope .... they can tow the descending balloon to Roswell NM which could use a boost after Covid. Dave

Nothing new. When Sputnik 1 was laughed [ LAUNCHED - thank you dictation software], the Daily Express asked why the RAF didn’t go up to shoot it down.
