QDX - rig control error
I use a Raspberry Pi4 to run WSJT-X 2.5.0 with an IC-7300 and it¡¯s fine.? So I transferred the USB cable to the QDX and set up a new configuration for QDX exactly as described by Hans in the manual. I get a constant error message ¡® Rig Control Error ¨C do you want to reconfigure the radio interface?¡¯? The good news is that something is working - WSJT-X recognises the QDX, hovering over the port information brings up ¡®dev/ttyACM0?? QRP Labs QDX transceiver¡¯ and it decodes FT8 on 30m and 40m.? But only after I managed to set FT8 and the band by clicking on ¡®Retry¡¯ and quickly trying to click on the mode and band menus before the amber spot turned back to red.? I¡¯m not fast enough with a mouse to succeed more than maybe 1 in 10 attempts so it¡¯s an exercise in frustration.?? On 30m, the message detail shows: Hamlib error:? communication timed out kenwood_open: no response from rig kenwood.c(863): kenwood_open return (-5)? rig.c(1026): rig_open return(-5) while opening connection to rig ? However on 40m, the message detail shows: Hamlib error:? Protocol error kenwood_open: cannot get identification kenwood.c(880): kenwood_open return (-8) rig.c(1026) rig_open return(-8) while opening connection to rig ? I tried selecting TS440S, TS480 and, for good measure, several of the other Kenwood HF rigs listed but no difference. I have checked and resoldered the USB connector on the QDX board and it looks fine.? I have also tried a different USB cable.? I should be most grateful for any suggestions as to how to resolve this issue. Many thanks. ? Chris? G4CWS |
I set up my QDX "exactly" as described by Hans in the manual and was also getting rig control errors from WSJT-X. It passed the CAT test, but asked to reconfigure when changing bands, tuning or transmitting.? It turned out that I missed the setting of Mode to none. I changed that and everything worked.

Ken, Bob,
As a follow-on to my earlier note, I can confirm 'Mode' was set to 'None'.? I read somewhere that changing 'Handshaking' from 'default' to 'none' had been beneficial for the writer, but that made no difference here. I changed port settings - 'USB' was available but that resulted in a different error:? invalid configuration.? So I tried typing dev/ttyUSB0 in full, which produced yet another error variant:? IOerror My next step is to try the QDX with WSJT-X loaded onto a W10 laptop, which I don't normally have available, in the hope that it will at least allow me to confirm that I have a fully working QDX.? No reason at the moment to think otherwise. Thanks again for your input and maybe someone else will be able to chip in with observations. Chris? G4CWS? |
Chris,
I was using a Raspberry Pi 4 connected to the QDX and running WSJT-X software.? The only way that I could get it to work was by selecting the serial port that showed up when I had plugged in the QDX and restarted WSJT-X.? The baud rate was set to 9600 and the polling for 10 seconds as per Han's suggestion.? The PTT control is set to CAT. I actually started with a Windows10 laptop and had trouble with it.? I went to the RPi4 to solve the communication issues. 73 Evan AC9TU |

Thank you.? Which version of WSJT-X are you using?? I have selected the port which shows as 'QDX transceiver', baud rate, polling, other settings all as recommended by Hans.? No joy. Changed handshake to 'none'.? No joy.? Loaded WSJTX 2.5.2 onto W10 laptop - that won't even work with my IC-7300 let alone the QDX.?? I hope to have an hour or so this afternoon to try ..? I don't know what to try ...? maybe I'll just click on things a bit and hope.?? I think I begin to see which way the software gods are pointing me. Thanks to all for suggestions.?? Chris? G4CWS |
Chris,
I am running the version that is available on the Add / Remove Software app in the Preferences menu of the default Raspian OS.? It is reported as v2.0.0 by K1JT. Currently, I have the Radio settings set to None and VOX as I had issues with the transmitter and in probing let out the magic smoke.? Before that, I had selected the Kenwood TS480 with the serial port as /dev/ttyACM0, 9600 Baud, 8 Data Bits, 1 Stop Bit, Default Handshake, CAT PTT? Method, Front Mic, None for the PTT Mode, and None for the Split Operation. The audio is alsa_input.usb-QRP_Labs_QDX_Transceiver-02.analog-stereo for input and alsa_output.usb-QRP_Labs_QDX_Transceiver-02.analog-stereo for the output. Hope the above helps. 73 Evan AC9TU |
I don't know exactly why, but when I've had issues getting rig control to work on MacOS or Linux I've found that FLRIG is more forgiving.??
Try setting up FLRIG to control it and then set WSJT-X to work with FLRIG. Also from experience, I've learned that I need to reboot between settings changes when things don't work on some systems.? It seems to lock up the I/O in some cases. In those cases port failure can be mistaken for wrong settings. --Neil, W2NDG |
Thank you Evan.?
Other than the version of WSJT-X, I have used the same settings as yours.? I'm satisfied that it's not likely to be an issue with the QDX and?I'm not inclined to waste any more of my time or that of those who have kindly offered suggestions here.? I enjoyed building the QDX but I am reaching the conclusion that it would be better off in a new home with someone who understands WSJT-X better than I do.? That would leave space for another QCX-mini unless, of course, QSX makes an appearance. Thanks again. 73 Chris? G4CWS |
¿ªÔÆÌåÓýInstead of WSJT-X, take a look at JTDX ( ). I had much better luck with that than WSJT-X Roger 8P6RX ---

Hi Roger
Good tip! I just installed it (Linux). Works well... I think I prefer it to WSJT-X. The appearance is to my eyes, nicer,?a slicker?user interface. I like being able to use "Dark mode" too.? I was somewhat surprised that I can run WSJT-X, JTDX and JS8Call all at the same time. They don't argue about access to the Virtual COM Port for CAT, which I thought that they would. I suppose that they are all using the hamlib library for the underlying CAT access, so it appears to the PC as one exclusive connection to the actual port.? I also fell victim too, to no RF output... A reminder of how useful QDX firmware version 1.01c is. I had the LED flashing twice... which means what... it means audio is getting to QDX but the audio level is too low. Same thing on both WSJT-X and JTDX, though the?output power slider was correctly at maximum in both cases. So I had to go hunting around in Linux and found eventually the "output volume" which I suppose is equivalent to Master Volume I dimly recall from Windows... not at 100%. After correcting that I got three flashes... and QSOs.? 73 Hans G0UPL |
My build of the QDX went perfect without incident.? When I attempted to setup the raspberry pi 4 WSJT-X rig control, after setting the ModemControl per the manual.
Rig control would not work, no matter what I tried, all type of variations to no affect. I read on here somewhere, somebody said FLrig was more forgiving.? So on a lark, I install/setup only FLrig, using the settings Hans outlined in the manual, went without a hitch, I used the PTT to test, good to go.? Closed FLrig, and hoped maybe the Linux gods were smiling, and sure enough, relaunched? wsjt-x went back into settings, same settings as before, Hit "Test CAT", it worked right off. Can't explain it, but I thought I'd post if for maybe somebody else's fix as last resort... Oh, one more, a build hint, the W2AEW video on winding toroids using the chopstick clamped in the vise, was a life saver.? Used a phone camera to count the windings by magnifying the image. 73? wb7ond |
