Probably not your issue Barry, but today I also had loud crackle. Found the cause though was my doublet was rapidly switching itself between being a doublet and an inverted L. One half of the feeder was barely making contact. I guess you eliminated such things by listening on another RX.
I have a loud rapidly pulsing noise rendering RX useless above 12.505 MHz, but that doesn't sound like your issue.
Have you gone through all the voltages mentioned on page 125 of non-US manual? I wish I hadn't: I have found very odd things on the pins of my LCD, e.g. 5V instead of no volts on Pin 14, and 0.25V instead of 4.92V on pin 4, 4.5V instead of 1.08V on pins 7-10... using analog volt meter. Not sure what that bodes.
I guess also that you poked your finger around components to see if anything made it crackle more or less. When I had T1 wrong, it was deaf, sounds like your T1 is OK. Hopefully others can be more helpful on what to look for/
