I want to try this too but I am confused, (I have asked the following question a couple of times but seems to get missed)¡­

4.1 Manually generated DFCW

Another button (or transistor, etc.) called ¡°S3¡± can be connected from pin 27 of the processor to ground. When using the ¡°TX CW¡± mode, when the button S3 is pressed (or transistor switched on, etc.), the transmitter keys down but at a shifted frequency, determined by the FSK parameter.

In this way, the Ultimate3S transmitter can be used to generate manually (or externally) keyed DFCW mode transmissions.

BUT, the same pin on the schematic (¡®R¡¯ pin) is used to control the 5W PA¡­¡­ I can¡¯t seem to get either function to perform properly (PA drops out after short period), so is there another setting I am missing?

I'm sorry, I owe you several emails, I know. I'm getting there...

The Ultimate3S packs a lot of functionality now, in that processor... and there are some pins which are necessarily shared between functions. The S3 manually generated CW function is NOT available when the 5W HF PA is being used. The 5W HF PA takes priority. In the code, if the "Shaping {ms Max}" parameter has 00 for the milliseconds part, this indicates the 5W HF PA is not used, so S3 is enabled. If Shaping ms is non-zero, S3 is ignored.?

I should edit the firmware manual to make it clear how this conflict between to uses of the same pin is resolved.

I will get to your other in the next day or two when I have a free moment.?

Hi Hans,

Thanks for the info. It makes sense now. I thought there was some conflict going on, but I found the controls to the 5W PA raised cosine circuit were very sensitive to RF and earth loops, causing the RF power out to stop prematurely. Now with ferrite clamps, screened and more direct wiring, and improved earthing, the power stays on for the whole transmission.

I also now have 1 watt out on 50, 70 and 144MHz by changing the PA toroid to a single 10 turn inductor (RD15VF1 PA), and adjusting the PA bias (it peaks quite sharply) for maximum RF out on 144MHz. Got my first U3S spot on 2m using this PA at last.
