QLG2 with QMX+ Poor Sensitivity
Two years ago I built the clock kit with the QLG1. The clock will sinc, up any place in the house including the basement. This year I built the QMX+ with the QLG2. The clock will not sync. up unless I am outdoors or have the antenna next to a window. If I move the antenna away from the window it will not sync.. I am wondering what others are experiencing?? Is this normal operation or do I have a problem?? Mike Krieger .? |
Hi Mike, I get results similar to yours between the QLG1 and QLG2. The QLG1¡¯s patch antenna is very good. The amplified antenna used on the QLG2 needs good exposure for reliable results. Tony AC9QY On Mon, Aug 19, 2024 at 9:15?PM Mike Krieger via <wa8uoc=[email protected]> wrote:

Did you actually use a QLG2 or the optional QLG3? I also found that the antenna in the QLG3 seems to be less sensitive in that it takes longer to sync up fully with the supplied patch antenna? than one that came with a several years old Leo Bodnar GPS Reference Clock that I have in the basement shack with the antenna just sitting on the middle ledge of a double hung window. Both antennas placed in the same position for my troubleshooting testing.? Though ....? I did find that I had initially not fully screwed down? the GLC3 antenna to the SMA connector on the QMX+. Sync time improved after making sure of full connection. But it still takes sometimes a few minutes to sync up fully. Not a show stopper for me. I? do use a QLG2 with my QMX high band that I bought and built this past February. It is a blazing fast performer! Its at my winter QTH but will sync up typically in under a minute even though it's right next to a very large aluminium clamshell awning. 73 GREG

Thanks for the input on your KLG2. Mike Krieger On Mon, Aug 19, 2024 at 10:28?PM Tony Scaminaci via <tonyscam=[email protected]> wrote:

Dan, Hans¡¯s write up on the QLG1 indicates the large ground plane under the patch antenna contributes to its excellent sensitivity. I think you¡¯re on the right track with trying a ground plane under the QLG2 amplified antenna. Let us know if this improves lock time and/or captures additional satellites. Hi Tony I think that most probably a QLG2 has better sensitivity because of the LNA in the QLG2 active antenna patch. However that also means it has a lower IP3, so in some circumstances it may have lower immunity to noise and other interference. I personally have found QLG2 and 3 to have a higher SENSITIVITY than QLG1. But that doesn't mean in all cases it will have a higher performance (faster lock, more satellites in fix, etc). Because if it is in an RF-noisy environment at whatever frequencies matter to it, then it could suffer more intermodulation distortion problems.? 73 Hans G0UPL On Tue, Aug 20, 2024 at 7:04?PM Tony Scaminaci via <tonyscam=[email protected]> wrote:

Hi Hans, I agree about RF noise impacting the active antenna. I¡¯ve noticed this with my PC radiating DC to blue light. Turning off the monstrosity definitely improves things. I¡¯ve had both the QLG1 and QLG2 running near each other on my desk with the active antenna close by and the QLG1 always gets a fix faster. Moving the QLG2 active antenna to a window helps a bit but the biggest improvement comes from turning off the PC. Tony? QLG1 seems to be far superior to QLG2. It works anyplace in my house including the basement. I will add a larger ground plane to myQLG2. Mike Krieger On Wed, Aug 21, 2024 at 2:41?AM John Laidler via <rjohnlaidler=[email protected]> wrote:
