Re: Now REALLY SOLVED ..... Re: New (was working fine) QCX+ 20 making loud buzzing, motorbike and clock audio after editing functions.
Thanks Steve and a very merry Christmas to you too. - And to everyone else here too.?

I disagree with this view that it is OKAY for people to order multiple kits (if they did). Many people were there waiting dead on 1800Z and had difficulties with the site being very busy. That isn't a criticism of the arrangements put in place by Hans, it is just a fact of life when there is big demand, but multiple orders would obviously deprive others in the QRP Labs community from getting one. I suppose some people might think it is OKAY in a disaster zone for the big guys to push the small people out of the way to get more than one sack of provisions.... I don't.

That surprises me.? Why wouldn't he want to showcase a working unit?? The build on it does not look all that challenging.? There must be a hundred You-tubes on winding toroids and all their cousins.?? Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men. Luke 2:14 |

Thank you for relaying your history with that problem.? I will try to remember that no matter how many times I look over something, I still may still have missed something.? Glad you finally DID solve the issue!? Merry Christmas!? ?Steve, KY4GX. Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men. Luke 2:14 |
Re: QCX-mini impressive transceiver
I really love some of the features Hans has managed to put into the QCX series - the ability to send messages in CW automatically for one, and also, I am really tickled by how good the CW receive feature is. I don't think I have ever seen a better decoder. Now and then if I lose my cool and miss a bit of CW, I can often just glance up from my paper and pencil and there is the missed word on the screen. How good is that? For the price charged, it is a bloody miracle!! :)) Then there are the beacon features. What a great radio series. The improvement from classic QCX to QCX+ is a big step up - especially the heat sinked finals and of course the neat arrangements in the physical design and the enclosure. I have no mini, so can't comment on that.

Re: YouTuber who wants to review one but impossible to get
I offered an already built QDX to Dave, but as he is looking for an unbuilt kit I was not able to offer one. Maybe someone else can help him out. 73, Gregg On Tue, Dec 21, 2021 at 3:49 PM ohwenzelph via <Ohwenzelph=[email protected]> wrote: So did Dave ever get one to review?? |
Now REALLY SOLVED ..... Re: New (was working fine) QCX+ 20 making loud buzzing, motorbike and clock audio after editing functions.
I thought I had solved this erratic misbehaviour back eleven days ago, but I hadn't.
Now I have definitively solved it after a few forays with the jewellers loup and my soldering iron. Just to refresh the memory - the issue was an erratic buzzing and strange horrible distortion of the sidetone. It was extremely unpredictable and I thought I had beaten it at least twice. The tone and amplitude of the buzzing seemed to be related to multiple presses of the edit keys, and it would change as I entered different stages of setting the time. The second hour digit buzz would get louder or sometimes softer when I moved onto the minutes one I was clearly hearing some artifact of the logic chips interactions, but could not understand why. Yesterday I discovered that I could make the buzz and strange tones come on and off by tapping parts of the main board. I had previously realised that knocking on the case firmly with my knuckle could make it come and go, so it was clearly a bad connection somewhere. I had thought the pins which mount the board to the front panel were the issue because once it went away when I wiggled it. Likewise a couple of tiny solder flakes I found and removed. Tapping the board and ICs more and more lightly with a plastic probe, pointed the way to the centre and rear part of the board so I set too re-flowing these connections. All of the through the hole joints have a tiny bit of the component leg - and then I found one which didn't. I floated the iron over the? negative pin of C24 and there was no wire there at all, just a grey soldered pad. I inspected C24 - I mean, I wobbled it and one end was moving. It seems that the builder may have cut the wires before they put the electrolytic capacitor into the holes, cut one leg a little too short, and soldered the pad but not the wire which did not have the length to get right through the plated through hole. I must have looked over this board with a 5 times mag loup, at least a half a dozen times and missed this. The radio would have passed inspection because C24 negative lead was mostly touching the plating on the plated through hole - touching until it wasn't ,because the board had warmed up, and and then the unsatisfactory behaviour would start and the just go away again randomly, as contact was restored for whatever reason. Oddly, I could always make it go away by switching off and on again. I don't know why that worked but it did systematically solve it for a while. The solution was to push the capacitor's loose side down to the board and flow more solder into the plated through hole and get enough heat in there to firmly connect the leg. Now the radio is perfect and I feel pleased that I was finally able to find and solve the problem. I'm really enjoying the radio in spite of this for a while rather puzzling issue. |
Re: QCX classic -- sidetone distorted after installing AGC board
Ronald,
The sidetone issue is the same whether I'm on the antenna or a DL.? Another note on the sidetone: it's sudenly very "clicky" in addition to the first dit or dah being badly clipped and all of the characters being "muddy".? I listened to the QCX's transmitted signal on my K3, and it sounds fine, so the problem must be with the sidetone circuit rather than the transmitter.? Apparently I messed something up when I was installing the AGC board.? Rats!? As a side note... I installed the AGC boards into my 30m and 40m QCX Classics today, and they both work fine.? -- 73/72, Dean K5DH |
Re: Troll
Is it really any of your business how someone signs into this forum?? Do you mean the admins of the forum? Yes, yes it is. I found it odd when I saw it on other lists, but when I compare it to other lists where people have "handles" or just their names on their comments, anonymity and in-group identification fall under the idea of the Greater Internet F#%kwad Theory.? When you ask people to make themselves clearly known, they know accountability is possible, and they TEND to behave more civilly. I've run mailing lists and other forums since dial-up bulletin boards back in the 80's and before. Anonymity (or lack of clear identity in the forum's in-group) breeds abrasive behavior. In ham radio groups, what identifies you as part of the in-group is your call sign. And yes, they have a perfect right to demand it. Some lists won't even approve you for membership if you don't have a call sign. Heck, just look at CB radio! At least in the US, 11-meter CB is comparable to a Mad Max movie. Some people on 75-meters ignore the identification rules, and where they do, it's a Caprican Cluster-frak. So...yeah, requiring members on the list to supply a call sign at some point is a useful civilization tool. The more rigid groups require it when you ask for admittance. The more easygoing just ask you to either put it in your name field so it's in the header, or in your signature block. I use the latter, because it's easier to remove if I'm sending an email to a non-ham. (I could set up a custom "From" identity in Gmail, but it's not what I like to do.) ? (Some of this has been a little tongue in cheek in terms of delivery style, but the concepts remain apt. Please forgive me, Hans.) -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- 73, Gwen, NG3P |
Re: QDX modes
For fast modes such as RTTY, does anyone know how well the QDX keeps up? What does the transmitted signal look like on another receiver? (I.e. bandwidth usage, and is it still as decodable as when sent using fldigi + a traditional SSB transmitter?)
(I guess I will find out if/when I get my hands on a QDX, but perhaps someone has already tested this.) 73 de SM6VNO Anders |
Re: QCX classic -- sidetone distorted after installing AGC board
Are you having this issue when using a dummy load? If you were using an antenna, go ahead and try it on a dummy load and see if the problem persists. The Mini does sometimes get a messed up sounding sidetone when RF sneaks into it from an antenna.? On Tue, Dec 21, 2021 at 12:17 PM K5DH via <mustang_maniac=[email protected]> wrote: Well, poop.? I removed the AGC board, and the sidetone is still messing up.? I either broke something, or something failed.? Suggestions?? |
Re: Decision time
I agree that a QCX would be shooting sparrows with a coastal defense gun with regards to WSPR. For that, I have a very nice Zachtek WSPR transmitter that puts out a quarter watt or so. I got the mezzanine board, so I could put 4 low-pass filters on it for 4 bands, but Harry suggested a particular mix of low-pass filters that would overlap and net me two more bands. With it connected to my Comet CHA-250b vertical, I can and do run a continuous WSPR scan of all 6 bands without changing anything. I love that the QCX can do WSPR, but I'm very pleased with my QCX's doing CW. That's their best trick. :) -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- 73, Gwen, NG3P |

Mark me down as interested. I¡¯ve got a Mac, an iPad, and an iPhone, all aging but working well. I¡¯m not excited about getting and learning additional hardware and an OS to chat with QRP-Labs devices. And out in the field a smartphone makes more sense than any computer.

A kit for the BT LE hardware would be great. A lot of people, including hams have iPhones. I can¡¯t understand the lack of support beyond indifference at Apple. A trillion-dollar company could afford to hire or contract a couple of hams to make their hardware more ham friendly. ¡ªMike Perry, WA4MP On Dec 14, 2021, at 11:57 am, Mario Vano <mvano@...> wrote: |
