I think if you just short source to drain (or LCD pin 16 to ground you will turn on the LCD)? If you don't expect to want to turn off the LCD then you don't need to replace Q301.

After a great deal of searching I think I have a conclusion - albeit something I can't rectify.
Fault was 0.8R between VDD and 0V. Never tested until construction was complete but have to assume this

Great that you found out and shared it.
But I'm surprised that this standard measure isn't included in the original design.
Software hides many hardware problems, but it doesn't fix them.
