Of course. A PTC resettable fuse in a SMD chip placed right next to the final amp would probably be a good idea anyway, if there's a good way to squeeze it in.

Your point of limitation coming from quantization is correct in theory, but the limitation is a non-issue for the question of simulating a tough load to the FET. No practical continuous variable
