Re: n00b question

Regarding the leads to the display, I would suggest using ribbon cable to keep the leads close together. The ones used for floppies and older harddrives is half the spacing as the pin header. Cut a longer piece than you need and splice them a bit longer to spread them out and cut them to the proper length to fit the pin header. Try to keep them together as much as possible. If there's interference you could experiment with further grounding or isolating the display from the case.
The "newer" ATA133 cables has doubled the number of leads and every second wire is grounded. It's possible to implement this tactic with the 0.05" ribbon cables and 0.1" pin headers as well, but would probably be a bit messy (:
And yes, even with the display mounted in the original position there's some interference when updating the display. Not anything to worry abount unless you listen to a dummy load at full volume.

Good luck with the build, 73's de SA2KNG

Re: Measured U3S power on 2200-160m

Hello Paul,

Perhaps consider getting one of the cheap Fox TCXO's? I use them in
U3S and they work great with GPS from a QLG1. They are a bit fiddly to
solder until you realise they aren't as delicate as they look and you
put four solder blobs on the PCB pads and on the pads of the Fox, then
fuse them together with a hot iron going around all four in
successionm rapidly. I have even used a crude hot air pen (gas
soldering pencil torch with the hot air tip on it) to remove and re-use
one from a dead board. I was amazed it survived the experience but it
was just as good as a new one! 2E0ILY

Thursday, November 2, 2017

I am pleased to report I finally found time to "finish" my U3S
build. Well, almost. I haven't built the OCXO yet. Truth is, I
probably don't need it anyway since I have the QLG1 and will only be
using this on the low bands mentioned. When I start running QRSS I
will find out soon enough!
During the build I asked if anyone had thoughts on T1 for optimized
performance on these bands. There was no feedback. After fiddling
with a bifilar wound core trying to make it lay flat (to accommodate
the OCXO) and look nice I scrapped that and just went with a single
25 turn winding. I've just measured power output at 240 mW on 2200m,
260 mW on 630m, and 350 mW on 160m. I can live with that since I
will be using it to drive an outboard amplifier. My measurements
should be fairly accurate. I used a well calibrated oscilloscope to
measure voltage across a precision 50 ohm load. Since output is
lower on the lower bands, I suspect some optimization could be
done... either by going to the bifilar winding and/or substituting a
core of different material. At the moment I an not inclined to
pursue that.

Re: n00b question

Thank you everyone for the replies... I think my original post may have misled some of you. What I was trying to accomplish with my original post was to explain that I was new to building radios, but, what I really wanted to know was: How much interference could be created by mounting the LCD screen off of the main PCB as mentioned in the instruction manual? What type of shielded wire would be needed to negate or cancel the interference? Would the breadboard wire suffice? And if the breadboard wire wouldn't work was there a home-brew shielding solution for this problem? etc.

After viewing some of the other photographs in the Builders gallery I see that at least one other builder used long(er) sections of wire to make the connections between the PCB and LCD module so it must not cause that much interference. Since I have the male to female breadboard cables already I will test the difference between the two mounting options and see if there is a measurable and/or noticeable difference between the two. I will update this post with my findings.

But, first things first - I'm still waiting to get the radio in the mail and get it all put together! (:

Thanks again!

Re: Toroid winding numbers and measurements

Update: in trying to make T1 for both 30/20m I wound 31,3,3,3 but RX on 10MHz is as good as my commercial rig if not better, so that's OK.

My low pass filter, to open it up for 20m I wound the toroids for 17m or so... but did not change the 30m capacitors so I have twice the capacitance it should.... since I'm going to use this perhaps only on 30m, maybe I better replace those capacitors and.or rewind that if it is affecting output power?

My output power is unclear: on an external watt meter that a friend says is reliable, but is not a QRP watt meter as such, on the 20W range it shows 2.5W out at 13V, but using the internal test RF power digital meter of the QCX shows 5W. At 20V (don't do that for long!) the external watt meter shows 3W whereas it should be around 10W.

So it seems power is a bit low and isn't rising significantly with voltage increase. Would this be due to LPF? In spite of this I had DX QSO's last night without problems. WSPR got me to EA8 from VK.

I guess now it is some experimenting with L1, L2, L3 to see if I can improve output power.

One issue: side tone does not seem to be working well though it was, at present it only comes on at higher volume and then very loud. Will have to check circuit etc is clean.

For an experiment today for those in Europe, if you can listen in the early morning your time, I'm running in CW Beacon mode on 10119.1 kHz once per minute, 25 second long transmission while busy with house chores. Would be interested if you can hear me and do send any RST reports to vk5eee at vkcw.net

The key here is Windows 7 Pro will allow 32 bit stuff or lower to work.

But the common or garden Win 7/64 Home edition will not :-(

I'm not sure what heritage AVRDUDESS is, so my thoughts were only offered as theoretical as to whether this might have been the problem.

However, what you say about? usbasp on Win 8/10 is perfectly true, in that later versions of Windows only allows signed drivers to be installed. Libusb is not a signed driver.

I wrote about it here -

Glad I don't have this crap any more since moving to? Linux.

Same with FTDI and Prolific chip issues, all gone with Linux, since the Kernel works them all withough all this driver bull^^^^.

Re: QCX Firmware Upgrade Problem With AVRDUDESS

I have Win 7 Pro 64 Bit and I can install 32 and 64 bit programs.?

The reason avrdude is not running with usbasp on Win 8/10 is that In these versions Microsoft only allows signed drivers to be installed. Libusb is not a signed driver.
There are instructions in the net describing how to disable signature checks in Windows. I cannot judge if they work, as I don't use Windows Version > 7 and possibly it's not a good idea to disable this function. But for someone without a Linux or WIN ?7 machine this could be a way to go.

Nevertheless under Win 7 I never had a problem when using zadig as described above.

Re: QCX Firmware Upgrade Problem With AVRDUDESS

Another thought.

Windows 7 comes as 32 bit or 64 bit versions.

The 64 bit version will not allow the INSTALLATION of any 32 bit programs at all.

One work around is to have an already unpacked version of the 32 bit program copied to the hard drive, assuming that
those files are easily copied and transferred.

So the poster who had it working on WIn 7 might have been using the 32 bit version of WIn 7.

WIn 10, is pure 64 bit, so old software is screwed before you start.

It's one reason why I went Linux in the end.

Either there was a better LINUX app, or I used a Windows program in WINE, which often runs better than running it in Windows ;-)

Can you see the device in device manager.?
