Re: QMX mid band not being seen by my computer on initial power up
Andrew,? All current QMXs already come with the software installed, so will be seen as a com device, and USB audio, not as USB storage. More concerning is that you aren't seeing anything on the LCD. Have you adjusted the LCD contrast pot?

QMX mid band not being seen by my computer on initial power up
Hi All,
?
I just recently finished my QMX mid band kit and on powering up, my computer does not see any usb device. I have tried a computer running Windows 10 and another running Linux.
?
I have tried multiple combinations of plugging or having the device unplugged before power on.
?
I have been using a voltage and current limiter with a battery pictured below, limiting voltage to 7V then 9V (to see if that would make a difference) and limiting current to 250 mA.
?
In the pictures, you can see the device off then when I turn it on, the V out goes down slightly and there is a 170 mA current draw.
?
Thanks all for any suggestions,
Andrew

Re: QMX and WinLink/WARA HF settings
I tried your settings Stan. Nothing changed ( Still very low TX power. But when I use PC dynamic to transfer audio instead of QMX in VARA settings, then everything is OK. PC sounds very loud and my QMX microphone works OK and TX is 4 Watts. PC audio levels are 100% everywhere.
What should be audio input level on VARA monitor? I mean the left scale. Is it ok if its level is around -32 Db when I accept some HF signal from gateway channel? Or it should be higher?

Hi Everyone,
I have a QCX mini that has been working perfect for the past 2 years.? With all the QMX SSB developments, I have not powered it up for quite some time.
Today, however, I decided to give it a spin.
If you look at the picture, I encircled the lost lines on the LCD (1 horizontal and 1 vertical).
The radio works perfect.
?
What I have done:
1. Factory reset the radio - did not fix it.
2. Reflowed all the connection from the LCD sister board as well as the connectors on the main board - made no difference.
?
So before I start really stripping things, have anyone else experienced this and what was the solution.

Re: Help with partially fried QMX
The good news is that your attempts to destroy your QMX have failed, at least partially.? The processor still seems to be working.
?
As for voltages you need a good 3.3V supply voltage before you can rely on what the processor measures.? The 3V3 SMPS voltage of 2.57V isn't expected and it is in linear mode. Neither SMPS is running correctly.? Check VDD and VCC to see what voltages you actually have, use a multimeter, be careful not to short between pins.
?
Other things to check: PWR_HOLD should be high (>2V), I expect it is because the processor has pulled it high.? LIN_REG_EN is probably low.? PWM_3V3 and PWN_5V should have pulses on them, a meter might indicate some sort of average.
?
And what sort of current is this taking?? Something may be taking too much current and that's pulling VDD too low for the regulator to cope. Try running without the display and encoder boards plugged in, that will take them out of the equation.?? And try the stand alone SMPS board tests, just in case there's still a problem with one of the new boards. |
Re: How to turn QMX-Hi into QMX-LOW band?
#qmx
Yes, the boards are the same - just make sure you've got the right toroids as well as they vary between versions.?
Following , I made a 40-10 version from an unbuilt 20-10 kit with the appropriate changes it works a treat! |
Re: QMX and WinLink/WARA HF settings
I think I know why QMX transmitted without VOX. PTT was activated threw CAT (I didn't disconnect QMX from PC). And microphone was connected to QMX. So it received audio signal via air from PC and transmitted as usual SSB.
I am not sure how good PC receives signal from QMX. It can do it only threw USB because there is no dynamic in QMX. And on VARA monitor I see waterfall with corresponding signals. But I am not sure that they are strong enough taking that output signal threw USB is so weak.
I still do not know why my VOX doesn't work. Did you check VOX with the latest firmware? |

hi, just tried again without connection to PC and power supply.
Just using powerbank and dummy load... same result... broken messages..
no idea...

Re: PA mod for QMX+
The fact is the QMX+ has lower output as you increase in frequency.
Fortunately, you don't need as much power as you increase in frequency.
Anyone who reports otherwise probably has errors in their test equipment.?
I use the QRP Lab radios for WSPR propagation studies. It would be so
beneficial if behind every power output graph, one could imagine an image
of the propagation state of the band at the time. It dwarfs the importance of the output.? |

Re: Ham Radio Crash Course is building a QMX tonight!
It was not in fact live as it turns out, but rather a well put together 2 hour video of what he estimated was 6 hours of footage over 2 days, with two back to back errors on the screen installation solved on camera, which is always good to see (forgot to solder a jumper causing no screen power, then a solder bridge in the same spot that left a garbled screen).
?
A very enjoyable time, filled with design appreciation.

Re: Help with partially fried QMX
Ok, so some progress - After reflowing a handful of cold solder joints, some of which were some of the early connections on the initial capacitors, the auto power on problem is now resolved. I did not find any solder flakes, bridges, or other shorts, simply reflowing the solder on some of my connections remedied this issue. ?I am however still seeing the black squares on the display and also realize that the backlight is not on. I've been reflowing the joints on the display board as well as their corresponding connections on the main board but havent had luck so far. Still stuck on black squares across the screen with no backlight. I've also tried reflashing the firmware by jumping the connection on the main PCB as described in the assembly manual but the issue persists. |
Re: PA mod for QMX+
I have tried many sets of BS170, TN0110 and now one set of the FDT86256. The TN0110 works the best for me on all bands. I have never blown up a set of TN0110 and I get the best power out across the bands with them. I have not tried 6 volt supply. maybe I will some time.
?
I currently have a second ACT08 stacked on top of the original. I noticed better output on 6 meters when I did that but YMMV.?
?
One thing that bothers me is that some people post that they are getting 5 watts out across all of the bands. I have never managed anything like that. On 80 meters sure. But upwards from there no. I use a Boonton 92BD RF voltmeter with the DBM option and a 10 watt 20db attenuator. I have a Boonton calibrator and I trust the measurements I get. I have a low band and a high band QDX which, power wise, are consistent with my QMX+. I would really like to know how people manage to get full power out on the upper bands.

Re: QMX+ with WA3TFS amplifier

If you are using COR function with the amp this will happen as the QMX sees a high SWR while the relays are switching over.?COR will always result in the transmitter's output being hot-switched with a resulting very high VSWR; transient, but it only takes an instant to blow a FET.? If PTT is available it is always preferable to use it.?? ?
Hans:? A big Thank You for providing the PTT variable delay function.
Suggestion For Improvement -
Have a separate delay function for PTT_P and PTT_N outputs, this would add more flexibility and possibly obviate the need for a sequencer for e.g. preamp plus power amp switching.
