Re: SOTA QMX SSB

Don't worry Hans.
It is already posted - #11 on the SOTA Reflector QMX thread..
I hope to add my own efforts shortly, weather permitting.

Re: com port conflict

Mark I am already struggling with the programs in use as my skills on the PC are rather limited. I have no idea, what Ham Radio is about and would like to avoid adding more software to set up unless it is dummmy proof and makes things easier. I just messed up something and my Flex 1500 KE9NS software will not start any more. Before I did loose the audio setup for WSJT-X (VM Banana) The QMX works though but with the 6 m noise is no fun there.

Subject: [QRPLabs] QMX+ Strange Audio Artifact - Help, Please...

Hi All,
?
Just completed building my third QMX+ (the first two were quite successful) and I've come upon an issue that I need help with. The rig appears to work as advertised: receives well, GPS works, RF output levels are acceptable, everything works great except.... when I key down I hear what sounds like a machine gun. It is not there during receive - only when I transmit. Not real loud, but loud enough to be annoying. Happens on all bands, with AGC on or off.
?
Any idea what might be the cause, or where to start looking for it?

Re: FT8 in USB mode - not working right?

I have also duplicated the problem in running FT8 in USB mode in WSJT-X.
After the first transmission of the automatic exchange, it won't transmit again.
?
My first note: FT8/FT4 will always work better in digi mode, so why are we trying this??
So a fix may be low priority, unless this also affects other WSJT-X modes that need SSB mode.
?
Anyway, I tried to diagnose it a bit, changing settings and VFOs used, etc.? I tried what I think is the least complicated settings, for radio control, i.e. setting both 'Mode' and 'Split Operation' to 'None', and setting mode manually and selecting VFO A.? But the problem persists.? I turned on the QMX CAT log, and observed the commands sent to QMX, and I see the correct commands being issued, but on the 2nd cycle when the TX command is sent, for some reason QMX immediately reverts to RX mode (per its log). This same action happens on successive cycles.? I have no idea why.
See annotated log excerpt below:

Only cycling power on QMX+ will fix it.
You can also fix it by going into the terminal program (PuTTY or whatever), and executing some commands, then exiting PuTTY and restarting WSJT-X.

Thanks. I should have thought of that. In fact I just updated hamlib in Jtdx because it had no qmx selection. I just installed wsjtx so I didn't think to update it there. I will give it a go.

You need to update hamlib within wsjt-x to latest version,? then re-select qmx.

It sounds like it is possible you are hitting a current limit on your power supply and/or the voltage is dropping below the rigs TX voltage limit, possibly rapidly cycling above and below a voltage or current limit.? Can you monitor the input voltage to the QMX when you transmit?

Re: Software Development and Requirements Creep

Peter,

It wasn't always that way.? At least not in the mid '60s when I started my career working at HP.? After my retirement from Intel (a hardware?company?that writes an awful lot of software), an Intel software team in Eastern Europe wrote the finest (fully documented) code I have ever seen.? Anyone?could pick it up and work with it. It was very complex, but well thought out before they actually started the?coding.? I used it as an?example of "how to".? ?

I also ran a UK based software?company in the?US.? My approach never changed here (do it right first time), and it did challenge a few US software engineers, but even they got accustomed to it and liked it. So much?less grief.

Hi Hans
?
I worked in software development for over 40 years for both UK and US companies, and I found that the big difference between the UK and the USA was "software engineering" vs "application development". In the US, there was a need to continusouly & publicley demonstrate "progress" on a regular basis, so US teams were required to release as often as possible (even if they knew there were flaws), so as to demonstrate that they were making progress, whereas UK teams in UK companies were required to release stuff that worked as per specifications/requirements. I personally found the "release it early with flaws approach, but we'll fix it afterwards" approach very un-professional, and in fact got fired from a US firm because I refused to compromise my professional standards - in the US "there was never enough time to do it right first time, but always enough time to put it right afterwards (at the customer's expense of course)" - time to market even if it was only just good-enough trumped delivering what was promised/contracted (and specified).

So, Hans, may I exhort to just keep doing what you do, and do so very well.

US guy here, it's f*cking horrifying is what it is. Know he/elon is not what we are.

Re: Software Development and Requirements Creep

I think the key difference is one of morality, imo, how the US works is on the basis of forgiveness, ie take action and then ask for forgiveness/forebearance/understanding, whereas the UK (and Europe by and large), works on the basis of seek permission first/before and then take action.
?
So in the USA take risks, don't deliver what was promised, but then argue the toss afterwards is the default - and if one is rich enough, keep arguing the toss forever.
?
If I was in charge, - and clearly we in Europe are not - transgresors of the law should pay for their transgressions to the full extent possible without any mitigating factors being admitted to diminish the penalty - it is one thing to unknowingly and accidenetly have transgressed, it is ir-redeemable to know, and yet still to have transgressed.
?
How is it possible that a convicted criminal is commander & chief of any country, never mind the claimed core of democracy ?
