Re: QMX+ Toroids - To Glue or Not To Glue?

Personally I would not glue the toroids down with anything.
The only thing I do when I install a toroid is I pull the wires down snuggly when I solder them so that they¡¯re pulled against the board firmly and that¡¯s it.
i¡¯ve built 4 QRP lab kits and never had an issue with the Toroids.
if you glue them it only makes any future adjustments or rework very difficult.
If it isn¡¯t in the manual don¡¯t do it.

One thing in favor of simply using 3s Li cells and an external charging system when they are not in use, is that the fully charged voltage is around 11.6 volts. ?I recharge mine from any convenient usb-c source with a postage-stamp size charging module ($0.35) JS6TMW

A correction.? The radio can start very noisy or very quiet in DIGI mode too.? Just got it to do both today.

All right.? Continuing to explore the subtleties of my new QMX+.

Starting my QMX+ in CW mode sometimes comes up very noisy, sometimes very quiet, but usually just right.??

Starting in DIGI mode always comes up just right.

That suggests that it's the AGC that's making things very noisy and very quiet.? (I'm doing all of this with the default AGC parameters.)

Well, can I get very noisy just by switching between CW and DIGI?? No.? I tuned 7074kHz and switched between CW and DIGI until I got tired, and I never got the radio to switch into very noisy or very quiet.??

What happens?if I start noisy/quiet on?CW and switch to DIGI?? The?noisy/quiet persists and I get noisy/quiet on?DIGI.? And it stays noisy/quiet if I switch back to CW again.

That seems to let the AGC off the hook.??

Is anyone else seeing this?? Here are the scores for three trials I just did on 20m.? I'm recording the number of starts that were right (R), noisy (N), quiet (Q), or other (O).??I set the audio gain to a comfortable level before I start.? Noisy is too loud to listen to, quiet is too soft to hear well.? The AGC is using the default parameters.? I thought that FT8 made a good source of noise, but apparently dead air may work even better.? Use a speaker if you aren't sure how noisy it gets.

R / N / Q / O
10 / 2 / 2 / 0 20m 14074
19 / 1 / 2 / 0 20m 14074
15 / 5 / 2 / 1 20m 14084 quiet (O was an intermediate noisy R and N)

Thanks for reading,

GE Richard,

I have seen others use a piece of brass tube from Hobby Lobby to extend the shaft, ream the hole in the case and any suitable knob thus leaving the boards intact.? Otherwise, I would put in a question to Hans and I believe he will give you the info you need.

Re: QMX 60-15M won't turn on... potential solution

Brien, we don't know about the things around your QMX, which power supply or is there a ground connection from this power supply to your computer. In the moment I don't see a relation to the firmware. So maybe a flaky ground connection between the power supply and the QMX bypassed via the computer and USB cable? Or did you move the QMX PCB a little bit when plugging in USB and "repair" a cold solder joint?
?
It would be nice to know how much supply current when you try to switch on without success (and without USB connection). If nearly 0 the QMX is really off and connecting the computer couldn't trigger something from the firmware. If you see something around 100 mA (@ 9...12 V) the controller seems to work but showing no action via the display. And if you see something around 200 mA the controller may stuck somewhere in initialisation.
?
Waiting for some more information.

Re: #QLG3 #QMXplus QLG3 troubleshooting - is there a manual? #QLG3 #QMXplus

Mike, I have experienced the same kind of problem. My QLG3 in my QMX+ had been working OK, but today only got a fix on one satellite, and then lost that as the day went on. I pulled the module out and checked all the connections to the board, then plugged it back in, but no change. It failed to receive any signals.. The QMX diagnostics shows the GPS viewer in red and the viewer shows no data being received. Did you ever try to get it going again?

QMX Repair by Jeff W1NC.

I recently completed assembling a QMX Mid Band Rev. 4 and had problems getting it to work properly. There was no output on any band, with lowish power drain on all frequencies. I contacted Jeff Moore W1NC and he kindly agreed to have a look at it for me. He expertly gave the set a full overhaul and found several solder wiskers and dry joints (ouch), rewound a couple of the toroids and returned it safely to me in full working order.?
So many thanks to Jeff for his time and help.?

QMX 60-15M won't turn on... potential solution

I put this here in case others have experienced this and might try this "solution" before taking your radio apart looking for some other problem.? ?On two separate occasions I have been unable to turn on my QMX.? After trial and error I discovered that with power applied to the transceiver, plugging the transceiver into the PC via the type C connector immediately allows it to be turned on and it works after that.? I don't know if this is a software issue where it gets into a state where it is expects a USB connection or some other issue.? I would be interested in knowing if others have experienced this.

CW Practice / Rag Chew Report and Announcement

¿ªÔÆÌåÓý

I had only one show up for the CW on the air practice session on Saturday,?25 January?at 11:00 AM Eastern Time, 16:00 UTC on 17 meters.

Date / Time Call Bnd Mode Power Frequency Snt Rec Name SPC# Comments
1/25/2025 16:40 NP3K 17 CW 10 18.082 579 559 Abe FL K3 at 10 watts 100ft sloped doublet

Conditions were good. SSN=131, SFI=205 A=7 K=1.? My next CW practice session will be early next week. Anyone is welcome. This practice is intended for operators who are new to CW or they need some CW practice. IT DOES NOT MATTER HOW POOR YOUR CW IS. Mistakes are OK. Poor fists are OK. Slow speed is OK. Really slow speed is OK. This practice is meant for you to improve your CW. I will do my best to adjust to your skill level. Operate at any power level. If several stations show up, I will operate as a round-table control station. I will do it as a round-table so everyone gets a chance to transmit. Please listen to my directions.

Details:
Date - TBD
Time - TBD
Band - TBD

How to find me - I will find a clear frequency and call CQ. Go to the Reverse Beacon Network and search for my call sign AB8DF.

That will tell you what frequency I am on. Tune your station to that frequency and if you hear me give me a call. If there is a QSO in progress, please wait for a break in the action. Then send your callsign. If I hear you, I will invite you to join the QSO and start a round-table QSO.

Reply to this email if you have questions.

Re: #qmx+ QMX+ PCB Rev3

Hello Sardar

You probably had a thought of replacing fixed inductors and diodes to their SMD versions as well to be soldered at the factory. Those are the last remaining THT components (well mosfets too) . What is the reason you still left them for the manual assembly? Cost, component quality? "Game utility"? (Some people just love to solder a lot)?
?
Would be interesting to know your thoughts on this.

There are performance questions. Not all 1N4007 diodes work as well as each other in terms of 2nd order IMD products. Even between different manufacturers of through-hole 1N4007 diodes. I'd like to change then to SMD but I need to test the idea thoroughly first. And so far it hasn't been the highest priority. Same applies to inductors. Remember the 47uH SMD inductors used on the Rev 1 QDX had self-resonance and it was necessary for the constructor to remove them and replace them with tacked on through hole 47uH inductors which solved the problem and have been used ever since. Again it's not an unsolvable problem, finding suitable SMD inductors, but it needs some work on testing.
