Re: QMX Immediately shutsdown; safe to apply power w/o control and display boards

Hopefully something simple and/or obvious.

Don't forget to check the 2 header connectors on the main board too.?

Good hunting. Let us know if you solve it.

Greg, THANK YOU.? Pulling the display board lets it come up, drawing
~150mA at 6V. The terminal program is running, so it seems that at least
part of the CPU is OK.? Now to figure out what I did wrong with the
display board!

Again, thanks.

You might try just removing the display.
If the current stays up, then the fault might be in the display board
or the 5v power board.

I've seen other posts where faults/ bridges/shorts in the power
boards' connector chains have caused odd problems. I took the advice
in the build instructions and clipped the one set of pins back about a
millimeter or so because I could definitely see I that a few were too
long and extended past the solder pads and awful close to other items.

Hi Thorsten

Not so much good vs bad, but differing material type. ie what you may use for a 4:1 OCFD feed is not the same as RFI suppression. Most mag material suppliers have tables to consult. From memory Fair-Rite 31 material is good for common mode chokes and suppression whereas 43 and 53 are more for lower loss RF transformers.

I use 3-6 turns of power and/or USB cables through various toroid types. I have read though it is possible to "over choke" a USB2 cable and have managed to do that here with 7 turns through an F6 or F9C Neosid core.

Clipon cable suppressors are pretty useless at reducing RFI on HF, unless a few turns can be fitted through them.

I am quite new to this topic and I know that there are "good" and "bad" toroids in the market to do this job.

Do you have a tip to get the correct ones? For coax I also need a quite large toroid.

Many thanks

Re: Disconnect USB after TX

¿ªÔÆÌåÓý

You're getting RF into the computer.? You need to wrap toroid chokes on the USB cable, the power cable, the coax, and any other cables going to the computer.?? My Dell laptop is very sensitive to RF if I do not take precautions.? You might also consider a USB isolator.? I have one that is helpful not only for RF but also prevents hash from going to the radio.

Disconnect USB after TX

Hi all,

I just have finised my QMX and I already could receive vis WSJT on LInux quite well. Unfortunately, after sending (endfed or dummyload) usb disconnects.

I tried on 10m and 15m

?

This is the dmesg output:

OK Dave, it sounds like there is no connection between R39 and R40 and there should be. One side of R39 connects to ground (0 v) and the other side is supposed to connect to R40. Where they connect together is what I called the junction of the two. This junction is supposed to connect to pin 5 of IC10. The other side of R40 is connected to 12v. Since you see about 12 v on pin 5 of IC10, then there is no continuity between R39 and R4o. Please look at the circuit diagram and the board layout drawings and determine where that interconnection is supposed to be and solder a short jumper?wire between the two points to restore the missing connection?between the two resistors. OK Dave, looks like there's something wrong in the area of R39 and R40. Those two resistors form a voltage divider from the 12v input and should show about 6 volts at the junction of the two. That same voltage should be on pin 5 of IC10 from where it then appears on the rest of the pins, 1,2,3,6&7. Please check those resistors and the voltage?between?them. Ok. Then you next should check the bias voltages on the op amp ICs 8,9 and 10. With your DVM you should see about 2.5v on pins 1,2,3,5,6&7 of IC 8 and on pins 5,6&7 of IC9. You should also see about 4.8v on pins 1,2&3 of IC9 and a bit less than half the input voltage on pins 1,2,3,5,6&7 of IC10. Please verify those voltages. Thanks¡.Ron

QMX, RTTY, HRD, Thumps, and other miscellaneous

I have been a user of Ham Radio Deluxe for as long as its been around and I find that I'm having no trouble on RTTY using Digital Master, also known as DM780.? I did some experimenting this afternoon with DM780 and FLDIGI and found that where FLDIGI drops out Digital Master keeps going.

Another tip for for those using HRD is to use the settings for Kenwood's TS-570 rather than the 440, 350, or 480. I find that the volume slider and the vfo switching work more as expected. This does not seem to be the case on other software, but is likely a matter of HRD's implementation of the various Kenwood profiles.

I have also found that keeping the AF GAIN slider in HRD's rig control at about 25 and using the QMX's volume control to set a good listening level results in smooth operation with no clicking or thumping. Run the AF GAIN slider too far up and bad things start happening.

To Hans and the team, Keep up the good work, and I look forward to seeing you at Hamvention. I'm the guy from the callsign hat and tee shirt booth across the aisle from you.

QMX Immediately shutsdown; safe to apply power w/o control and display boards

Just completed my Rev 3 QMX assembly. It performs the USB stick emulation ok, to place the FW file on board. I did this both on initial power-up and by jumpering AUX2 to GND.? However, after FW load, when I press the left knob it draws power for an instant and then powers back down to 0.000A.? I'm using 7V, limited to 200mA.? I have inspected all my joints w/ a magnifier, all seem fine but I'm considering buying a USB microscope.

To start troubleshooting I want to check the power boards.? For easier access, is it safe to power up the unit without the control board and display boards plugged in?

I've been monitoring this group since I placed my order.? I think I remember a reference to a troubleshooting guide by Hans, and another report of this failure mode, but I can't find either.? Pointers to either would be greatly appreciated.? I'm aware of the troubleshooting log Hans has posted about units he's fixed, but it doesn't mention this failure.

Thanks for any advice and pointers.

Re: QMX & SOTAMAT

Yeah that sounds about right. It is a special case after all. Could be something the dev is working on, never know. Maybe give him the suggestion along with a good app rating just in case. And if he has a "buy me a coffee/beer" thing... ;)

Re: QMX & SOTAMAT

Jason, I can't see any way in iFTx to send a custom message like you mentioned, you just enter your own callsign and locator, it is not very functional as yet and needs attention from the dev.?
Previously I have done as you have suggested and put the code from the app directly into wsjt-x with success.

yes there are clear instructions about this on the sotamat website, basically sync your data on your phone before every outing.
