Thanks Hans!? Much relieved.? Excited to get this kit put together!

Re: QMX V3 - what's this stub for?

Hi Dave

It's a mistake ;-)? ? And also a mystery... Q202 source used to go to?+12V. Now it goes to Vcc (+5V). That stub is a leftover from the 12V connection. The mystery is, why Eagle CAD didn't warn me about the stub. The checks would normally show me all such stubs!

Actually, there is some incompatibility with new AND old rigs. I bought it for a Xeigo G90 which I briefly owned (didn’t like at all). It didn’t work with that. So I tried it on my trusty 1982 TS940S. Didn’t work there either. If I put my ear next to it, I can hear it working properly.?

Changed cable several times, still could not key the 940.?

Tried it on my old (1981) FT-707. Same results.

Looking for fix ideas or replacement suggestions.

Not an issue with radios that have a simple straight key connection, which is generally where it is used - older rigs and simple rigs. Reason for this is an undocumented connection from the PIC chip to the RING of the output jack. It serves no useful purpose and the simple fix is to cut the connection to the RINGof the output jack.?

Re: HELP - Broken SMD Capacitor #qmx

Alan and Evan,

Great info and good advice.

I've got a 10 pack of SMDs coming from DigiKey now too.
Have looked at a few SMD soldering videos and will give that a try first.
Fortunately that cap is in a relatively open area :)

I agree, thinking things through is always better.

Very impressed with QRP-Labs kits, assembly instructions, the great on-going support from Hans and the gang and of course this great Group.

My first serious kit build was an Elecraft K2 about 18 years ago, with all the Un-Un additions and almost every option they offered at the time. (about 100 man hours of prep and work !)
Have recently assembled 3 of the 50W amp kits, figuring out turns and capacitor values for one on 15 meters that works very well.
Don't plan on running any of the three ( 40, 20 15) at more than 10amps for FT8, WSPR, and JS8Call, and then only when conditions are crappy and I need the extra punch.
My basic bench testing into dummy loads showed no issues and on-air testing with the K2 and the QRP-Labs amps was FB.?

I'd say QRP-Labs are every bit as good as the big E.?

Greg,

All you need is a 0603 0.1uF from a reputable dealer.
Liquid flux, a clean fine iron and suitable vision. I use ordinary x4
reading glasses.Hold it in place, (most difficult part?)
A dob with the iron should attach it to the pre-soldered pad.

I can give you 7 years. Best if you got an old board and tried a few
times.? Thinking about the job is good, worrying bad:-)

Re: QMX Rev 3 build instructions

If you have a Rev 1 PCB, use the Rev 1 manual. Definitely.?

Re: HELP - Broken SMD Capacitor #qmx

Hi Greg,

Soldering an SMD component like a capacitor is relatively easy.? It would be easier for me to use an SMD than a leaded component.? I put a small dimple of solder on one of the cleaned pads and tacked the part in place using a fine tweezer to hold the part.? I solder the other side, then go back and touch up the first side.

You are correct that the capacitor is a bypass and not critical.? Any ceramic rated for better than 15 volts should be fine.

Re: Putty for Mac OS?

I like tio (). Simple, works like screen. Has a neat auto-reconnect feature - if the USB-based serial device goes away because it is unplugged, tio stays running and reconnects when that devices becomes available again.

Compile it yourself, or install via MacPorts or Homebrew.

Re: QMX and iPhone for digital modes

Joan,? Just to clarify, I have experienced the same issues that Kevin, K3OX mentioned below.? The app is able to make contacts, with the exceptions Kevin noted.? The logging definitely has some issues that need resolving.

Re: Putty for Mac OS?

I wasn't happy with how "screen" was working for me with the QMX, either under the Mac's Terminal program or under iTerm2.? I installed PuTty using MacPorts, and it works fine: .? I also had to install XQuartz, which had disappeared from my Mac, if it was ever there.

A long time ago (pre V3.2 documentation was 3/13/2006) , we had a group build of the PicoKeyer by N0XAS (Documentation said "Super PicoKeyer Low Power Iambic Keyer").
I built 2.? One was normal and the other I made an MCW interface to the radio Data Jack.? We did code practice on 2m FM simplex for some time - still not very good.
It appears now that is included in the manual
The little coin battery lasts for a very log time.

The dual MOSFET designed allowed us to use the PicoKeyer on some tube radio at the museum I volunteer at.??

GREAT option (IMO).

HELP - Broken SMD Capacitor #qmx

Good morning Group,
?
Hoping for information and validation of a proposed repair for a problem I created while assembling my new QMX kit.
?
I cracked SMD 0603 capacitor C513 (its in the TXBias input area of the Low Pass Filters section).
It looks like a typical by-pass capacitor to me, BUT I am not an EE or talented RF designer.
I was able to float it off and cleaned up the solder pads.
?
I wanted to see if anyone could give me the basic specs (tolerance and V rating)

AND . . .

Get opinions/advice on whether I could replace that component with a small, regular 0.1uf ceramic capacitor with lead wires. I ordered a 10 pack from AdaFruit of common, 0.1uf bypass capacitors (+/- 20% - 50V), I'd preform the leads, insulate with quality shrink tubing, tape the component down and then tack and solder the leads to the pads. Figured I'd add a drop of hot glue to the 'face' of the component to make sure it stays flat on the board during the rest of the kit assembly, and getting everything in the enclosure.?

I'm almost certain I can solder the leaded component onto the pads and have it lay flat in a nearby empty area, rising above the board at no more than 2 - 2.5 mm.
I'm not so sure I can successfully solder in a replacement? 0603.? 74 year old eyes, hands and fingers aren't what they used to be. I do have a good soldering irons and a magnifying headlamp (up to 15X) and can still assemble, modify and repair tiny through-hole component 'stuff' pretty well.?

All info, opinions and suggestions are welcome.

Re: QMX: Immediate transmit after switch on

Meanwhile I had the time to dismantle the radio. Again I did some continuity check direct at the terminals at the pcb. ?Although the paddle jack seems to be ok I desoldered it. But the QMX still transmit dits after power on.?

At the moment I have no glue to continue.

Re: Faulty Progrock2 - no response to ticket #progrock2

Peter,

Try this:? log into your account at the QRP Labs shop, look up the order that was placed and click the "return" button to request an RMA.? In the explanation, include the ticket number and explain that the ProgRock2 is defective.? Maybe an RMA request will draw the attention you need.

Re: Quiet Power Supply

Has anyone repurposed an old? ATX power supply from a desktop for the Qrp-Labs gear??

I have one but while well regulated it does not seem very clean compared to other various supplies around the shack.
