One possibility would be a Kickstarter or equivalent (even just a preorder using your existing system), which would not only give you some idea of the demand, and raise some funds ahead of time, but give those of us who want one a way to lock in a kit (or ten!) without the stress of "Hmm, what email address did I use?? Oops, too late!" while ordering.

Maybe... but it is difficult to know what the price is going to be. In the "old days" (2019 and earlier) this would all be easy. Now, not so much. The other problem with Kickstarter is the 5% fee.?

Re: Decision time

Harry

For camping either a plus or mini both work well. I have a plus on 80m with the PA it's a fun rig. It's easier to build a plus than a mini.?

I bought and built a mini just because it's cute, on 20m. I honestly need to use it more. I agree to carry along its smaller.?

I think a qcx is an overkill for wspr with a reasonable antenna. A u3s single band with a filter for a second band is pretty fun, and having 250 mW copied half way around the globe is easy enough on 40 or 20 meters.?

Given your nice rig there I suggest only adding another qrp labs rig if you find it very interesting. If you have a single bander to take to the field instead of your other rigs, you are decently set. Forgive me qrp labs but I tend not to do the same project twice, well except for a second u3s here. Enjoy what you have OM and the global ham fellowship. I think I have seen you on the ft8 screen.?

Decision time

With limited funds do to fix income and the desire for one more radio I don't really need, I am torn between getting a QCX Mini 40 m or QDX. Why the 40? Two reason 20 and 40 meters is what I use when I am camping or at the park. 160, 80, 60 meter antennas are just too big and for 40 meters, which is also large can be used with my MFJ-1889T, MFJ-BigEar portable Dipole, ATS-100 on a tri-pod. I am also working on a loop using a MFJ-9232 loop and finally a 9:1 unun matchbox with 30-40 ft of random wire and LDG 100Plus ATU. This same setup goes for 20 meters.

The second reason for the 40 meters is I screwed myself when I bought a tech special 40 meter mini (with no case). The owner said he was a major kit builder and the unit did not work and the bottom of the board was running hot. My experience with problems like that are typically simple. This was not. The VR was blown and 12 volts was all over the board so I paid for junk...However the junk has all the coils wound for 40 meters and they look very professionally wound and really hate to see them go to wastes, thus the 40 meter mini.

It should be noted I plan on doing a lot WSPR with my 20 meter and I would with my 40 meter with testing various antenna designs and setups. My 20 meter has the TXCO and I would order the TXCO for my 40 meter. I also am finishing up the GPS and 8/9 volt voltage regulator so I can run hot and heavy WSPR and not hot finals.

As far as the QDX goes it sounds awesome I do a lot of FT8 and other digital modes so this would be fun to have in such a small package. I really don't need it since I have a K3/10 and Xeigu G90 both running digital right now. Both with internal ATU's.? So do i really need one dedicated TRX for digital? Also add lead time to get one and it seems the unit is already having some redesigns. Thus maybe the 3rd or 4th run might be better.

My last option is don't worry about the 40 meter coils going to waste or one more project. Wait until a 40 mini comes up for sale at a reasonable price and hope I still have the cash to buy it. Money is tight in this house and I sell things to buy things and I have a postal MO coming now for something I just sold on qrz.com. So that is my dilemma. Any wise suggestion would be helpful..hopefully.

Re: Guaging demand, was Re: [QRPLabs] Successful QDX order

Since we are making Hans work so hard, it might be a good idea for him to charge more for his product to compensate for the extra time he has had to put in.? As many have stated in other threads the current value offered by QRP-Labs would warrant a price increase.? This could calm down the orders somewhat, and as supply catches up with demand THEN lower the price.??

I would echo this!? Hans - raise your price on the first batch - and tell everyone that the next batch will be the normal price.? That way, if I can't live wihout it for a few months, I'll pay the high price.? I think that this would be completely fair - high price to be the first to own one...

Quite frankly - I would have paid $100 for an early shot at a QDX.? I suspect many would feel this way.

Re: QDX that cannot hear very well. #qdx #troubleshooting

First off, did you upgrade the firmware?? It should read version 1_02 in the QDX terminal window.? That is the first step to take as the firmware shipped can lead to finals failure.

Second, you should always do the scans with a 50ohm dummy load attached, as anything else can give unknown results.

It is also a good idea to let us know the specifics of your build:
My QDX Info:
  1. What PC software you are using:?Windows10 Home with all updates using WSJT-X 2.5.2
  2. QDX firmware version you are running:?1_02
  3. Whether you built the QDX for 12V operation (output transformer 3:2) or for 9V operation (output transformer 3:3).? Built for 12 volts
  4. What power supply you are using: voltage, current capability, and whether it is a Linear or Switched Mode type.? 12.2 volt Battery
  5. Now everyone has Rev 1 PCBs, but in the future when Rev 2 comes along, please also state what PCB revision you have.? Rev 1
  6. Also, state any deviations you intentionally made from the manual. We may need to know about your deviations? :-/? The only deviation was to remove the SMD inductors before starting the rest of the build.

As far as I know, there are not any diagnostics yet.

QDX that cannot hear very well. #qdx #troubleshooting

I have a QDX that I managed to get together and it powers on.?

I can access it and I have the sound ports from the USB.?

I am amazing it turn red and blow up like my last QCX I built.?

It transmits but does now receive.?

I connected my K2 to 30m and with no antenna and used the antenna to connect to the QDX and I saw the signal and it was strong and good.?

I reversed this and the QDX could barely hear the signal on the K2.?

The K2 can hear many signals and the QDX does not see any when the antenna is attached.?

I ran the sweeps and the first time they run they look OK but not great but then if I run them again even on the same band they look like crap.?

I did not really see any nice step by step troubleshooting guides like I found in the QCX Mini -? do those exist???

I suspect maybe my toroid skills are lacking?? ? But they look nice to my untrained eye.? ?

Any thoughts??

?I have a scope and DMM so if there is anywhere.?

I checked continuity on the last steps to build where I removed the surface mount stuff and added the last pieces.? that all passed.?

Re: What is on your work bench ?

U4B-27 will be off the bench when the clouds clear and the wind drops.
5.55 is the gram weight of the radio payload, less the antenna, which is about .6 grams... for comparison, a fat house sparrow weighs about 40 grams and a skinny one is about 25 grams.

Hi Robbie, all

You divide by 100 if what you measured is V-Peak.?
You divide by 400 if what you measured is V-Peak-to-Peak.?

So the question all comes down to, did you measure V-Peak or V-Peak-to-Peak?

Talking of those charts, they're even on the main QRP-Labs Dummy Load kit page too!

In other news that also means my 20m QCX is actually pushing out around 4.2W, and there's me thinking it was only doing 700mW lol.

You all have a great Christmas!

A 1998 U.S. Fender Jazzmaster is on the bench right now for a 3 pickup mod. Not my idea of what to do to an expensive guitar but the customer is always right. Not radio related but at least I get to use the soldering gun hi hi. And then it's on to finally replacing my smoked QCX Mini for 80M.

Re: YouTuber who wants to review one but impossible to get

For us it is, yes. A?YouTuber with many thousands of subscribers, it's an career.

Without products to review, or subjects to talk about then they can't produce the videos that we enjoy watching.

The question is whether someone who makes a living from it should jump the queue. If the sales of QDX were struggling then it would warrant publicity. As it stands, demand already outstrips supply by a large margin.

Re: QDX order for batch #2 looks like it went through but no confirmation email

Hi Peter

You did get an order in, order ID 52563. I got the payment OK. There isn't any problem with your order.?

We made some changes to the helpdesk configuration yesterday which should theoretically hopefully improve the reliability?of mail delivery. I thought this issue was confined to and addresses but apparently I was wrong and even gmail does this. Nasty.?
