Re: ATmega328 unavailability due to global semiconductor crisis

Hans, you are so honest and as someone else said - transparent - about it all, you are to be commended. Besides we all know you. You'll figure out something regardless. Maybe some people will be miffed by your price increase but if they are upset, let them be upset. Nothing in this world is the same as it used to be. I think we are blessed to have what we have. Keep up the splendid work sir. You are truly an inspiration.?

Re: Soldering TCXO module on QDX

Not trimming both ends. Good idea I wouldn't have thought of. Thanks!?

Re: Soldering TCXO module on QDX

I added extreme ...HIHi. But I did really overheat the traces with too large a tip. Only 35 watts but the tip was blunt.
I found really good pencil tips on Amazon for my Weller.
They may solve the problem. The foil separated from the board I noticed on magnification. It seems almost too thin.?

Re: ATmega328 unavailability due to global semiconductor crisis

Hans has already said that he's using the STM32 family for some of his projects. However, I fear that almost any ?C is going to be in short supply for some time.

Of course, there's always the risk that the supply of the newer chip will dry up as well but hopefully the situation will improve before too long.

If there is a change like that,

I would also suggest a minor change

?

On the LPF / BPF alter the pin outs so that the two signal pins are the 2 central pins and the ground pins are the two outer ping, their circuits are the same from both directions, it then makes it no longer required to put them in then right way round on the board, and eliminating a potential problem

?

Down side you have to have an old an new PCB for the kits

Re: Advice Please Concerning QCX+ Case

Hi DK

Yes, Curt is right.?

In fact whilst there have been several PCB revisions of QCX-series radios to make minor improvements, there have never been any revisions of any of the QRP Labs enclosures. A QCX+ enclosure on day 1 was the same as one now, and fits any PCB revision.?

i have a plus here in the standard case, sure a QCX plus will fit into a standard QCX plus case. Yes the mini fits it¡¯s case also but a bit more patience in assembly. Check out the pictures at the store. And perhaps order something nice to share the shipping, I enjoy the QCX amplifier.?

Re: QRP Labs Shack Clock

Adafruit has a nice selection of 20x4 (and 16x2) displays.? Some with reverse/negative(?) LCD which can help with viewability in some lighting conditions.? They also have ones with RGB backlighting if you want to have some fun. ? They all take the same 16 pin header except for the RGB which has a few more pins that you would need to separate and send to your own RGB circuit.

They also sell the temp sensors that work with the clock (it can display 2 different temps)
If you plan to go portable with it like I am, they also make a 3.7 -> 5.2V voltage converter + battery charger that will let it run off a typical rechargeable LiPo type battery or USB power.

I am building a self contained field clock for portable operation. It will show UTC + local date/time, my gridsquare, altitude and coordinates, local temp and maybe the temp inside my go box(why not?).
I'll post pics when it's done and running (it's a winter project).

Hi Dave,
I am an OOGY. I did not get one, because I was too late.
If I would have got one, I certainly would have redirected it to you. I love your work and I learned a lot from you.
Maybe there is somebody else out there willing to help you out.

Re: Soldering TCXO module on QDX

The TCXO board is very small so not very heat tolerant, so avoid excessive heating. Normal care in soldering. ? I have found that using the longest cut off leads you have, leaving excess on both ends and not trimming until both sides are soldered appears to work better.? This will help in preventing the main board connection from coming loose while soldering the TCXO board.?

Re: ATmega328 unavailability due to global semiconductor crisis

It's really sad how the supply of components has plummeted in such a dramatic way. Under other circumstances, a leadless variant of the MEGA328 on an adapter PCB might present an alternative, however there is no stock supply whatsoever. There seems to be 1k8 pcs ATMEGA328P-PU on stock $someplace here in Germay for just under €2.5 each, however I doubt that such an amount is sufficient for a business relying on this exact part. The farnell website is rather funny: " Back order today stock arriving week commencing 1/16/23". Yeah.

On that note, I always wanted to make the suggestion of doing a small run of a partly SMD assembled board variation of QCX+ to ease and speed up manufacturing time of pre-assembled QCX+ etc. which your co-workers would certainly appreciate. There's probably a bunch of resistors, diodes, and maybe all OP-amps that could be added as SMD footprint components in parallel to the existing THT components if space is not occupied by traces on top layer, as the board has to go through SMD for MS5351M and FST3253 anyway. However I highly doubt that all the things going on @ Labs QTH would allow for any additional time to do so.

George,

I don't see "Extreme"
It just says do not overheat.
Provided the PCB lies flat as shown then you really need to be hamfisted to do damage. Just follow the instructions.
