That's a good call Roger.

Re: U3s and AVRDUDESS problem

Hello Carl.

Have you tried a reboot of your PC after installing the libusb.dll.

Also, are you selecting the arduino from the Avrdudess drop down menu.
I'm assuming that you have flashed the arduino isp sketch to the arduino.?
And are you selecting the correct com port to be used with the arduino as the programmer.
Can you see the arduino com port in your PC device manager.

I've always found zadig a useful tool to install peripherals like the arduino etc to the PC to be used with Avrdudess too.

Kind regards, James.

Re: U3s and AVRDUDESS problem

Are you sure that your power supply is sufficiently robust? I had a similar problem with my u3s; changing the power supply fixed the problem. You might try putting a 4700uF cap across the power and see if it helps.

Re: Questions about the QCX

Steve,

Changing QCX CW OFFSET has no effect on the filter center frequency or bandwidth.

Brady,

Assuming you bypassed the onboard filter (discussed above) there is no reason QRP Guys filter will not work unless their input impedance is so much lower than QCX PHONES jack is designed to drive.

It shows how to adjust the cw offset, so i was wondering if that also changes the filter(s) peak frequency.

I do not know of any free DGPS code that might be available, but Black Cat Systems
does have information available that could help to build something workable:

Many years ago I used Garmin GPS receivers to do something similar.? We were
not interested in all the facets of DGPS so not all the functions were available
in our systems.? Today we have the larger screens being used for BITX projects so
this might drive use for a more complete GPS with DGPS capability.

I would start with a fixed location GPS receiver and attached processor to store and
average the data received over time from several satellites.? With sufficient averaged
data this could give the actual physical location of that GPS unit.? Each subsequent
stanza from this fixed location receiver could then be compared with the averaged data
to generate a correction factor for singular data stanzas.? By using a communications
link it should then be possible to apply this correction factor to mobile GPS units in the
vicinity of the fixed unit.? Processing all the information may be beyond the capability
of an Arduino but if inputs were limited it just might be possible.

You are correct that there are a lot of aspects related to building your own Amateur
radio DGPS? (ADGPS...?) for making GPS more accurate, and this may not be of
interest to most on this group.? For this reason I too have limited my response.?

Setting up a new ref station for a DGPS service would be an interesting project. To whit, getting a new station with an ten-fold improvement in accuracy AND regularity, licensed, working and on the air/active.

The DGPS services available on LF in the USA require a dedicated decoder, as far as I know and have experienced.
Are there any free solutions available?

And are there any other generally available services, and associated decoders, in other countries? I throw this question out to a wider circle.

We're using the QLG1 to regulate a transceiver frequency and synchronise it for WSPR transmissions, small variations of Lat, Long, and Height are of little importance but of great academic/radio amateur interest.? (I wanna fix it! Is it broke?)

Re: Questions about the QCX

John,?
Thanks. That's probably more involved than I'd like to get, but I ordered one of the $15 CW filter kits from QRP Guys and am going to try it off board. If it doesn't work, I'm not out much! However, I am also bookmarking your note above in case the kit doesn't do the job. So, thank you for the guidance! ?

Re: Questions about the QCX

Brady,

Audio filtering in the QCX is fixed and way too sharp for my CW and WSPR pleasure.
I built several outboard audio filters with great success.

Take? a lQQk at this site
?http://www.bowdenshobbycircuits.info/opamp.htm
Drop down to? "2nd Order Opamp Filters" where there is 200 Hz math? example then plug in your pleasure.

I also have first hand experience here...
>>>>http://www.circuitstoday.com/band-pass-filters<<<<
I plugged these? math equations into EXCEL
then built several BPF and variable band pass
THAT WORKED FIRST TIME.

With an outboard audio filter...
You will need to bypass the QCX onboard audio filter:
Locate R27 and R29.
Lift (unsolder) the leg of R29 that connects to R27.
Lift (unsolder) the plus (+) leg of C21.
I found it much easier to cut the trace between C21 (+) and IC9A (pin 1).
Solder a jumper from the now open pad at R29 to C21 (+) pad, then
plug your outboard filter into the PHONES jack.
Note sidetone and volume work just as before.
If you re-run the alignment procedure ...
you must realize the test results were/are based on the onboard filter installed.
I suggest re-run the procedure with the outboard filter just to feel and hear the difference,
I like it and think you will too!

If known mod of C22 not installed yet, replace C22 (10uF) with (0.1uF).

Re: Wood: the other case alternative. #case

Came out really nice.

Wood is good!
I have three radios and a laptop(Rpi) in wood cases.? Couple of things.? Michaels,?
AC Moore?and others sell wood boxes hinged lids, same for Amazon.? Some are
pretty neat and strong and?almost any finish from camo to steampunk is easily done.

Most of the same places sell "aircraft plywood" with thicknesses from 1/16 thick to a?
very solid 3/8ths inch.? With this material any sort of box or panel inside one can be?
easily fabricated.

It is a minor thing to line the inside with aluminum foil tape if shielding is desired.

All controls and hook-ups are on the PCB, except for the power jack and the two push buttons. Works very well, and has the old timey radio look I was looking for.
Naturally, it won't work if you are looking for a space-age high tech look. lol
Many thanks to Jim W7EED for his help in thinking through my volume control issue, rig works perfectly and have made some nice contacts.

Questions about the QCX

Hello, I have been operating this 40m QCX radio for a week or so now, making some nice contacts (mostly 300 to 500 miles during the daytime) and have a few questions about its operation:
1. Is there a noise reduction function on this radio? My ears have become spoiled by NR on my other radios, and I guess I view it now as close to a necessity. Is there a NR feature? If not, is there at least an attenuation function? Preferably an attenuation that can be easily adjusted on the fly, like, during a QSO, without digging deeply into menus?
2. Filtering. I read somewhere in the manual that the filter is set at 250 hz, but is there a way to dial it in narrower (see above comment about my having become spoiled by modern radios)?

Brady KD8ZM
