Re: Approvals for 630/2200m operation are now being received

Any one else still waiting for an email? Is there a link to a database anywhere?

Many US hams who sent their notification of intent to operate are now receiving approvals. Got mine a while ago and will be working on an antenna this weekend.

QLG1 GPS battery charging

K7JD, Joe Dubner

Attempting to use the QLG1 GPS with the ProgRock ...

The assembly manual for the QLG1 GPS receiver states this about the on-board 3V Li rechargeable battery: "This is charged automatically during operation." I am trying to understand how this can possibly happen. The schematic shows VBATT on the 6-pin connector and pin 22 of the "RF Module" connected to the battery (through R8 and R9) but what supplies the charging current? Specifically, what is the "automatically" part of this? Or is additional (external) circuitry needed? The manual doesn't make this clear.

Thanks and 73, Joe, K7JD

First power up of QCX and blank screen - sort of??

¿ªÔÆÌåÓý

Also having issues with first power up.

?

What I am getting is as follows..

?

When 12v is first connected I get 2 dim lines of bars, with a pulsing thin line moving within the bars.

This then quickly changes to a single bright top line, which stays for 3-4 seconds, and switches back to the 2 dim lines with the pulsing brighter line that moves up and down the top bar line..

?

I¡¯m lost...I¡¯ve checked the pins on IC2 numerous times and resoldered every pin a few times??

Suggestion for Construction Manual improvement

It's almost impossible to improve what must be one of the very best instruction manuals ever, even I who have never built much more than a Pixie have found constructing the QCX easy.

However, and agreeing with this video segment:

I suggest the solution is to draw a bold thick <HR> horizontal line below each image before the next section, so that those cases where page breaks cause confusion -- it's almost happened to me too and I'm sure it'd affect others even when looking at the PDF on a computer -- it is less likely to associate the wrong placement image with the instructions.

I seem to be quite capable of putting components in and soldering them fairly neatly but when I tried to remove even a simple capacitor as I put one leg in the wrong hole, I had to go elsewhere for help after struggling half an hour (inadequate removal tools). I'd hate to think how impossible it'd be for me to remove something with even 3 legs!

Re: Questions : CW-R and Memory sending

¿ªÔÆÌåÓý

This may be related. I set the display for good contrast on RX. When key is down, I only see 1/2 the display. With key down I re-adjust contrast setting. Now with key up, the display is wrong. I am getting < 10mv change in +5 v rail when I key. Contrast pot VERY sensitive.?? Cure, replace pot with much lower impeadance.. in my case 5Kohm, and break the track from top of pot to +5V. Inset a resistor of 4 to 6 times the pot value, across the break in the track.? Problem gone, adjustment easy and stable.

Cant help you there, my set shows good freq whilst memory sending.? Have you used it on air much?? Im really looking forward to the first qcx/qcx qso.??

I've finished to build the QCX 40m Transceiver last weekend. All adjustment seems good! And both the CW and WSPR with GPS works well. The receiver sensitivity is -127dBm from hp8656B SG signal source. It's the same or better than the "R2" phasing receiver. Also the ISP works well with AVR-ISP writer. Now updated to the latest version of 1.00C.

But I have two questions as below;

1) The CW-R(LSB mode) is not available while I set the VFO parameter as mentioned in the manual. Can not change to LSB.

2) Bad Frequency displays while memory keying, my version is "7040080" when I transmit on 7012kHz.

Any suggestions welcome.

Re: QCX layout+component overlay error

hi Hans. Built the QCX. Works fine. Just one issue. I couldn't set the balance pot (R27).
On investigation, the pcb layout label(component overlay silk screen) has R19 and R25 transposed. Corrected this and R27 now works OK.

Re: First power up of QCX and blank screen.

In another thread, Hans suggested shorting over L5 and/or L6 to see if these were part of the power problem. If that works, replacing L5/L6 would be the next step.

Re: Problems with Relay Kit

OK, I have some time this weekend, i'll fire up the iron again.

Yeah I am currently on lead-free, but i'll set my iron a tiny bit hotter and see if it helps.

As for a magnifying glass, see what i can borrow from work!

Right gotta shoot for now... the week is nearly over!

Re: First power up of QCX and blank screen.

Simon, will it come on if you quickly cycle the power on & off twice? If so, some others, including myself also had this problem. I had to replace L6 with a 47uH inductor to get mine working. I had just the top row of blocks, so your problem may be different if toggling the power doesn't work.

Re: First power up of QCX and blank screen.

Hi Simon.

Are you using a good power supply and is the 328 IC seated in its socket properly. No bent pins etc..
I tend to use a 12v battery to power my kits.
I've just tried powering mine up from some of the crappiest PSU's that I've got and can't mimic your scenario though. It was one of the first things to look at when powering the U3S kits.?
Other than that I'd say check all your solder joints and component values/posistioning thoroughly. Crystals etc.

I'd be very interested as to what it was that is causing your kit to do this.

Kind regards, James.

Re: Problems with Relay Kit

Hi Ian.

I don't think it works like that. I'm fairly sure its only capable of using LPF.

Anyway, to the PCB of the relay board.

Looking at the bottom side of the PCB, you could do with running the iron over pretty much all of the LPF socket header pins. Some of them look a bit dubious as to them making contact.?
Have you got a good magnifying glass so you can examine them at close quarters.
Its well worth getting hold of one and going over the solder pads with a fine tooth comb.?

Do you use lead free solder by any chance. I've found this type of solder doesn't quite flow as well as the leaded stuff leading to dry joints.

kind regards, James.

Re: First power up of QCX and blank screen.

HI, James, its both rows of blocks. Adjusting the contrast only fades them in and out no text at all.?

Re: First power up of QCX and blank screen.

Hello Simon.?

Is it both rows showing blocks or just one row showing blocks.?

Re: Problems with Relay Kit

Also, just out of curiosity, how should this be set up for BPFs instead of LPFs?

Re: Bifilar wound phase splitter (T1)

Softrock has a bifilar wound phase splitter. QCX has a flat wound phase splitter.
Any advantage of one over the other?
Bob,

The QRP Labs RX model does too.
It is usually explained that balance is better, maybe also bandwidth, not needed with the QCX.
T1 looks a little more complex but laid out in a way to make winding easy and avoiding too much imbalance.
And I'm wondering how it would be built bi/tri/quad filar... it would make things difficult!

Re: Problems with Relay Kit

RF output isnt soldered yet, until i definitely have it working (been using test equipment to try and get anything so probes right now).

Jumper next to the 10 pin connector is relay power - and I am getting clicks when it changes relay so i am guessing they have power, this is mainly because i am at work and my soldering iron is at home, about 300 miles away.

I have been attaching the test equip to the pins labeles "Out" and "Gnd" by relay 1, i persume that is correct? also are the jumpers in the right place for operation?

Thanks for everything so far
