Re: QMX Failure #qmx

Nico,
?
Check IC503 (four 2 input AND gates). Two of the 4 outputs were shorted on mine.
?
My QMX+ was working flawlessly for a long time.? When I added the SSB FW I was playing with the VOX and
it might have had too much gain? along with a possible intermittent coax cable to my QRP dummy load.
?
Anyway smoke started pouring out of the case and one BS170 was cooked. After replacing the BS170's (decided to solder the ground leads just to the top pads on the board) is
when I had it in Message Repeat Mode and all of a sudden the receive got much louder.....indicating a open coax or bad connection. I purchased a new PL259 to BNC cable without
the lousy adapter.? Waiting for new transistors (and IC503) from Digi-Key. Transistors this time were still good - but I didn't realize this until I removed two and removed the IC.
?
Still trying to figure out why the outputs of the gates to the inputs (gate) of the BS170 went???
?
Michael

Re: Dreaded dead transmit from SSB Calibration routine

Yes, I am getting a genuine 4W+ output on 60m using my calibrated LJ-2K+ Power Meter.
?
Hmmmmm, will give that a try - never thought of doing that. I will advise later.

Re: QMX short during SSB calibration?

Are these the correct spec BS170?
MOSFET N-CH 60V 500MA TO92-3
?
I just heard a pop doing a POTA at what I thought was about a 2 SWR but halfway through an FT8 transit a pop. Hopefully this is my only issue. Receive still works but I¡¯m not powering up again until I can open it up. I¡¯m away from the QTH so will be a few days before I can open it up.
?
thanks

Re: Difficulty with the SSB compressor

I figured it out. For some of the SSB config fields you need to type in a value while others need a left/right arrow to change the value. On the compressor field you must use the left/right arrow. If you type in a number it will be accepted but it will give odd results.?

Re: I made a protective cover for the QMX+ which also doubles as a stand and storage!

Hi Peter! It's a piece of velcro! It's how I attach 2S battery packs to my radio for field use.

I use 2S 18650 holders for FPV goggles, they happen to have the same plug, and come with built in chargers sometimes.

The official velcro brand is extremely strong once the glue sets (24H) and i've never had the strips of velcro come off when removing a battery.

QMX Feature Request - On Board CAT/serial monitor tool

What it does: use the LCD to display characters received on the CAT serial port and characters transmitted over the serial port.
?
The RX data could appear on the top line and the TX data on the bottom line. Perhaps an indicator of some sort that shows that data is being received by the QMX. even if the data can't be decoded as printable ascii characters. Perhaps, when the CAT/serial monitor is active then disable the terminal applications mode so that a newline character on the serial port doesn't take over the port for terminal applications.
?
Why? I've been developing? microcontroller code to read VFO A on the QMX and display frequency and band info on a remote LCD. I first wrote a QMX CAT simulator program so that I could test and debug the microcontroller code easily. Also I have verified with PuTTY that the QMX responds correctly to incoming CAT commands. When I connect the microcontroller via USB to the QMX I am unable to establish that the two are communicating. This CAT/serial monitor diagnostic tool would help me answer the questions:
  • Is the QMX receiving serial data on the CAT com port?
  • What data CAT commands/data is received?
  • What is being sent by the QMX over the com port.
This little rabbit hole opened up with this thread: /g/QRPLabs/topic/scripting_language/112779657 ?In which I suggest the OM use a microcontroller to speak CAT to the QMX. But then I asked myself if I could actually accomplish what I suggested and, here we are. I am aware of 8.7.3 CAT command test and 8.7.4? CAT monitor in the manual but it's not clear to me how to connect both a terminal and microcontroller to the QMX over the single USB-C port. It would be very helpful if the QMX itself could tell me on the LCD what is happening on the serial port.
?
Thanks and 73,
Matt

CW Practice / Rag Chew

¿ªÔÆÌåÓý

Michigan QRP Club

On May 19 I had another one of my CW practice sessions. I worked three stations.

Conditions were OK. SSN=53, SFI=117, A=10, K=2.I used my Elecraft K3 at 100 watts and a 100 foot sloped doublet. My next CW practice session will be May 20 at 18:00 EDT / 22:00 UTC on 40 meters.?
Anyone and everyone is welcome. These practice sessions are? intended for operators who are new to CW or they need some practice. IT DOES NOT MATTER HOW POOR YOUR CW IS. Mistakes are OK. Poor fists are OK. Slow speed is OK. Really slow speed is OK. This practice is meant for you to improve your CW. I will do my best to adjust to your skill level. Operate at any power level. If several stations show up, I will operate as a round-table control station. I will do it as a round-table so everyone gets a chance to transmit. Please listen to my directions.

Details:
Date - May 20
Time -?
18:00 EDT / 22:00 UTC
Band -?40 Meters

How to find me - I will find a clear frequency and call CQ. Go to the Reverse Beacon Network and search for my call sign AB8DF.

That will tell you what frequency I am on. Tune your station to that frequency and if you hear me give me a call. If there is a QSO in progress, please wait for a break in the action. Then send your call sign. If I hear you, I will invite you to join the QSO and start a round-table QSO.

Reply to this email if you have questions.

Re: Dreaded dead transmit from SSB Calibration routine

And did you check voltages at G of BS170 (see the link in my first post)?
?

Re: Dreaded dead transmit from SSB Calibration routine

Robert, did you measure using an external power meter? If not maybe something is wrong around T507. Please check this document from the QRP Labs Wiki.

Re: Microphone pre-amp

Yannig, good idea. But the QMX delivers 3.3 V via 2.2 kOhm. To have 2.5 V for the IC the current must be not higher than 0.36 mA for the IC and the mic. Unfortunately the IC requires 2.3 ... 5 mA in working state. To use this IC you need an external supply (but blocked towards the QMX).

Please add my name to the v2 ATU list. ?My QMX+ is being shipped.
Thanks.

Microphone pre-amp

Hello,
?
Has anybody tried this microphone preamp :
?
Evaluation boards can be found for about 5€ looks good to me but I am no expert !

Me too! Ordered a qmx+ kit at Dayton.

Re: Dreaded dead transmit from SSB Calibration routine

Thats strange that you get 4w+ at 60m??? Reset factory defaults to erase calibration??

Re: Dreaded dead transmit from SSB Calibration routine

Ludwig,
Thank you for your reply. Please note my amended post above. I ran Diagnostics in Putty and see the following RF Output:
?
  • 60m - 4.3W
  • 40m - 0.6W
  • 30m - 0.5W
  • 20m - 0.2W
  • 17m - 0.1W
  • 15m - 0.0W
The SMPS appear normal and other conditions on the Diagnostic screen appear normal (unless I'm missing something). I've checked all 1N4007 diodes as well as several others on the board - all check out OK.

Perhaps you could buy a quantity, get a small discount and share the shipping cost with other hams.

Re: Dreaded dead transmit from SSB Calibration routine

Revision to original post...
?
I just checked again and I'm actually getting about 4W on 60m but then it drops to 350mW on 40, ~100mW on 20m, 75mW on 17m and 0mW on 15m.
?
Help!

Re: Mini Microphones for QMX SSB

hey eric,
I'd like to buy a fully assembled mic.

Hans has said that he will add envelope shaping to the SSB calibrations.
This is interesting. QDX has the same transistors in the PA, doesn't have
envelope shaping by design, and typically doesn't routinely damage the PA.

Robert, maybe this document from the QRP Labs Wiki is helpful.
