Re: SSB Audio/Mic Issues
¿ªÔÆÌåÓýI would claim that I had a similar problem. ?I too was testing into a dummy load and monitoring vis another receiver. ? This was after many successful SSB contacts. ?But, also after numerous firmware upgrades from testing beta versions. ?The audio was almost completely indistinguishable as human. ? My assumption was that I was over driving the mic, so started adjustments there. ? But found that a Global Gain under the EQ Menu was set to 20. ?Not sure how or when that was set, but putting that back to 0 and making minor teaks to the mic gain, the transmit audio sounds maybe a little processed, and ¡°Contest Punchy¡±, but it is making solid SSB contacts. I hope this at least gives you a direction to explore. Regards, Wilson (NT5AT) On May 17, 2025, at 6:31?PM, Nick Schutz (W0YEM) via groups.io <w0yem@...> wrote:

Re: SSB Audio/Mic Issues
Stan,
?
I have been transmitting into a dummy load and monitoring via a my shack base transceiver sitting on the same workbench.? Audio through the mic when doing this with the (tr)uSDX sounds fine but with the QMX you can hear what I would describe as just a mess of noise.? I can tell something is being transmitted but nothing is intelligible.? I will run through the setting you have suggested and see what results that yields.? Thank you very much for your suggestions.

Regarding the connection problem - which version of Hamlib is installed in your WSJT-x (you can see in the lower right of the settings window), and which radio model do you have selected?
Hamlib 4.6.1 has an error which makes it so the QMX selection won't work - so use QDX or TS480s.
Hamlib 4.6.2 works if you select QMX as the radio model.

WSJTX Doesn't see QMX but Putty Does
¿ªÔÆÌåÓý??? First question, are there issues running several different radios on WSJTX by? switching configurations? ??? I had WSJTX set up so I could switch to an IC-7100, IC-7300 or QMX+, it was working fine when for no reason the IC-7300 would only transmit at a few watts. I deleted WSJTX and reinstalled, the IC-7300 issue went away but now the QMX+ isn't seen by WSJTX. ??? The laptop is very basic, I want to use this in remote locations, no internet and only for FT8 or WSPR. Laptop has 4 GB of ram and 64 GB of storage and two usb ports, one usb port is dedicated to a gps antenna and I run Nmeat for a time reference. ???? I can see the QMX+ in device manager and even access it via Putty but WSJTX does not see it, the IC-7100 and IC-7300 work fine. ???? WTF????? Any ideas?? |

RIT in N1MM
I still use TS 480 for the setup of N1MM. When I am in Run and press the up or down key the QMX + changes to RIT? .- .030 but cannot be modified then. I have to exit from that on the QMX+. It would have been perfect, if the QMx+ would follow the RIT in run. any suggestions ?

I used to be a dedicated user of NaP3 with my K3 (which I no longer have). Following the instructions from Carol, I got it mostly running and feel like I've done something dumb. I have the panadapter working fine, but there's no waterfall. I've got the waterfall Low and High Levels set to the same as for the spectrum in Setup>Display. What else could be wrong? Also I've forgotten how to click on the display to change the VFO??? Clicking with the left mouse button doesn't seem to do anything. Running in CWL mode.
?
Thanks in advance!
?
Tnx es 73,
Randy, KS4L
?
PS using the latest QMX firmware, 1_02_00, NaP3 ver 5.6.0 (didn't check to see if this is the latest, but it worked fine with my K3), Windows 10 (up-to_date). |

Past experiences taught me that trick about 1N4007 diodes, which is why I installed them that way. This was indeed one of those cases where an oscilloscope was the right tool to figure this out. I'm no expert, but I was able to fumble my way through to a conclusion that turned out to be right. Your guidance reassured that I was on the right path...?
Thank you again very much everyone, for your help! Special thanks to (Chris, G5CTH)... ?

Re: SSB Audio/Mic Issues
Nick,
How are you evaluating your audio quality?? And what does the distorted audio sound like?
I had a similar problem with one of the mic elements I used, and found that is was the QMX noise gating that caused the problem.
Try turning off 'Mic. noise gate' in SSB settings, and see if the audio sounds good.? In my case, it had some background noise, but the distortion disappeared.
Also turn off 'Phase pre-distortion' and/or 'Amplitude pre-distortion' and see if one of those is causing distortion.? A bad 'ssb calibration' can result in distortion with one of these options.
Also make sure your compression is not turned way up, keep it down to 5 or so until you get the rest of the parameters set up.
Let me know if any of these ideas help.?
If you disable any of these settings, and it improves things, then you can play with the setting and find a value that works well.

Re: How to enable transmit for winlink
Scott,
Presuming you are still using VARA,? and the release version of QMX software(1.02), try this:
Open the Winlink VARA session window.
Under Settings->Radio, select 'Kenwood Amateur' as the radio model, select your COM port, and for the PTT Port, choose 'Kenwood TS590S' (at least that one worked for me).
On QMX, set it to SSB mode (USB), and set the SSB input to 'USB' (universal serial bus).? Do not set 'PTT as serial 3' - that is for a separate internal QMX hardware serial port, which is not activated in firmware.
On QMX, select VFO A, so you can see the 'dot' or 'bar' under the A that indicates PTT and TX.
Then check your PTT this way:? in the VARA modem window, select Settings->Soundcard.? Set the drive level all the way up to 0dB, then press the red 'TUNE' button (have dummy load or antenna attached).
This should key your QMX.? You should see either a 'dot' (PTT) or a 'line' (PTT+TX) under the A on the display.? This means that PTT is working.
If you don't see the 'dot' or 'line' under the A, then your PTT is not set up correctly.? This should not happen if you use the same settings I have, but you can try alternate Kenwood settings for the PTT port.
If you see a 'dot' but not a 'line', your audio from QMX is not high enough.? Turn the sound output all the way up for the QMX output device in Windows (using mmsys.cpl is a quick way to check this).
If the audio is still not high enough, on QMX, go to the SSB menu, and increase USB gain from 0 to about 2 or 3, and see if the 'dot' changes to a 'line' and you get power out.? Don't set the USB gain too high, or it will likely distort - set it just high enough that the power meter on the QMX no longer increases.
I hope this helps.

Re: How to enable transmit for winlink
Make sure radio is in USB mode. I use RMS Winlink, in vara-hf set com port, ptt to cat, and select radio type kenwood ts590sg, select qmx sound card in/out.
Make sure you have gone into the QMX settings and changed from ext microphone to USB audio source for SSB. I also set the gain in "band configuration" to 70ish from default 54. |
