Re: QMX+ First 1000 QSOs Impresions

Hans is likely to get a big head with all that praise.? I'm sure most of it is due to that "under the roof dipole."? :)? :)??
?
Seriously though, it is a remarkable radio. While I'm way down in the corner of a large country, I am also seeing plenty of contacts and amazing distances.

Re: How to use ProgRock2 in an oscillator?

Steve,
?
The ProgRock2 is a tiny square wave generator (Si5351a) -- it replaces the entire oscillator circuit -- you don't use it in a Colpitts oscillator, you replace the oscillator with the ProgRock2.? The ProgRock2 has three outputs, each with eight selectable frequencies (banks 0 thru 7).? By default, bank 0 is output, so if you only need one frequency, there's no need for switching.? The switching involves a logic pattern of grounding three select pins.? What I do is use a diode matrix and transistors to present grounds to those selection pads in the correct sequence.? The ProgRock2 needs a stable voltage source for operations -- I use a LM7805 voltage regulator and give it a clean 5 volts.??
?
The square wave is usually not an issue, but of course it depends on your application and the circuit involved.
?
I've attached a couple of photos that show how I implement the ProgRock2 in a Heathkit HX-1681 transmitter.? It replaces the entire oscillator section on the HFO/Mixer board, and the frequency output is selected by a voltage coming from the band switch.? The output of the ProgRock2 is buffered by a 74ACT08, which was recommended by Hans.
?
If you want to know more, I've written extensively about how to implement the ProgRock2 in both ER Magazine and Spectrum Monitor. ?The ProgRock2 is a nifty way to get around the problem of flaky/drifted crystals.

Re: Introducing QMX CARROT

Chris,
That's a great design!? I've been thinking about making something similar, but I hadn't thought of the speaker.
Have you thought about writing this up for a QRP Quarterly article?

Re: QMX USB device not recognized by windows

Hi, yes it works now. Changed Device Parameters in registry as well (EnhancedPowerManagementEnabled) and switched the QMX In Firmware update mode..

Sometimes its good to ask, when you don't see the simple part,hi.

Many thanks for the hint.

Re: Feature Request List?

Hans,
?
Would it be possible that when an external microphone is plugged into the paddle socket that SSB:Input be automatically set to "Ext. Mic" and that if there is no external microphone plugged in that it is automatically set to "USB"???
?
That would make going from SSB QSO's to VarAC/JS8Call and back easier.? ??

Best,

The VOX enable seems to have a firmware bug - but (for me, at least) it is an easy issue to work around.

Here is the bug:
Whenever you enter a menu, then come out of the menu system, the VOX ceases to work -- at least until you press the menu exit button again, which in this case changes the VFO mode.
?
I think this bug happened recently.? Hans updated the firmware to defeat vox while pressing menu buttons (because the button presses were triggering the VOX).? Then the VOX is re-enabled when exiting the menus.? But for some reason there seems to have been an error introduced which requires an extra level of menu-exit to re-enable VOX.? And I think pressing the 'Tune' encoder button will also set it to working again.
?
I set the VOX sensitivity to about 35 and it works fine with my reasonably-sensitive microphone, after enabled as noted above.

#QMX+ MIC circuitry improvement

Hello QRPers
?
I would like to suggest an improvement I did in MIC circuit in my QMX+. Existing circuit is quite simple and powered from not very clean VDD. By adding two capacitors (100n, could be more) and two resistors (33k, 1k) I was able to reduce the audio noise on the other side receiver by 6 to 8 dB (simple check with Audacity peak meter on two recordings, before and after, FT-891 as a receiver). This will improve SSB signal, especially on higher bands (low band noise). I assume the same will apply to the internal mic circuit.
It would be also good to use filtered VDD, same as for microcontroller ADC (from C214), but I did not wanted to have a wire across the board. Maybe a separation resistor on the microcontroller key/paddle line can also help but I think most of the noise is getting in because of dirty digital supply used for bias.
I think it is worth to consider in case of next PCB revision, both QMX and QMX+.?

Hi Jerry

Hans was going to implement some sort of scripting language.?? Maybe that could leave the back burner now that SSB is real?

#qmx #problem #troubleshooting #troubleshooting #qmx #problem

Hi everyone,
?
I've been using my QMX for about an year with great joy and happiness when suddenly my QMX stopped receiving or transmitting.
I'm fairly new to radio and i am struggling to find the problem.
?
The sweeps are all garbage on all freqs: RF filter sweep, Audio Filter Sweep, everything but the LPF sweeps.
The Voltages seem good although when I press "T", the transmitter voltage shows 9.8v in red. My QMX is 12V.
?
I have little knowledge and i need a hand from you guys, to know where to start.
?
I zipped and attached the image sweeps.

Re: Firmware updated to 1.02_000 - QMX has changed from 60/40/30/20/17/15 to 80/60/40/30/20?

I am not 100% in the know, but I saw a few videos that after updating firmware, they did a factory reset and they had to choose the bands their radio was made for. I cannot advise if this is obtainable without doing a factory reset. It may be possible to change via a windows machine using the diagnostic tools

As the title says, I've just updated the firmware and now seeing my radio is showing as 80/60/40/30/20m rather than the 60/40/30/20/17/15 version that was built.

I wondered if anyone has any ideas of how this might have occurred?

Re: QMX+: low RX sensitifity @ 6m / 22 dB noise floor / 1500 Hz wistle

Hi Michael, there is already a thread covering this ¡..

QMX+ with ~1000 tone on 12M & 6M

I did sent it to Hans direct some time ago but so far no response. I also see the poor sensitivity on 6m.
No-one on the forum seems to have come back with a solution yet.

QMX+: low RX sensitifity @ 6m / 22 dB noise floor / 1500 Hz wistle

Hello,
?
I? recently build QMX+ and noticed a huge
noise floor and wistling a 6 m.
?
Therfore I measured sensitifity using a signal generator.
?
Band [MHz] Sens [dBm]@Noise+10dB Noise [dB]

21,04 -99,0 9
24,9 -97,0 7
28,1 -103,0 5
50,5 -79,0 20
?
Method: injection of signal Rx frequency + 1,1 kHz Mode: Digi
Noise: signal detected by WSJT-X
Sens: Noise floor + 10 dB
?
Noise floor is increasing by frequency, but at 6 m wistling and digital noise make RX unusable.
Output at 6m is about 2 W at 9V Vbat (12V Version)
1,5 kHz wistle starts at 20 m and is increasing by frequency
?
Using wsjt-X i evalating waterfall diagram: (QMX+ at 50 Ohm)

?
At higher bands 1,5kHz signal is constant and independent from RX freuqency.
?
At 6m additional audio signals are appearing.?
?
6m RF Filter seems to be ok.
?
Any suggestions to detect cause?

Re: QMX + VARA HF for Winlink

Also, radio will only transmit in SSB, not Digi. Is that usual?

Re: QMX + VARA HF for Winlink

Thank you. I updated the firmware from -09 to -12 and got USB Gain to appear. Interestingly, I cannot increase it, only decrease it (almost like the VFO knob doesn¡¯t work).

Still no audio input to the PC. Shouldn¡¯t you be getting input on the VU, even if you¡¯re not in a session?
