Message from Jack W8TEE about T41 book

(For some reason Jack has a problem accessing this group)
========================

All:

Al and I have just updated the 3rd edition T41 book. We moved the calibration info from Appendix C to its own chapter (20). The expanded instructions and new software make T41 calibration much easier. We have also updated the narrative in numerous places and have concentrated discussions on the V12.6 release where those changes are important.

Some of you are asking yourself: Do I need to buy this update. Truthfully, if you already own the 3rd edition, we would say no. Most of the important changes are discussed on the web site and photos and schematics are available there, too.

On the other hand, this is the last change we will be making to this book. Al and I have been at this for almost 7 years now and we're getting a little burned out. For that reason, we are turning this site over to Oliver King, KI3P, and Dr. Bill Schmidt, K9HZ. Al and I will continue to be active relative to the T41, but will leave the details to Oliver and Bill.

If you do want the final version of the book, its new cover looks like this:

Inline image
The book is actually available now, but the Amazon ad will not reflect the new cover for about 10 more days. (If you order now, it will be the new version.) If you are attending the FDIM conference this May (coincides with Dayton Hamvention and the conference hotel is about 10 miles away), Al and I will be selling autographed copies on Thursday night (May 15th) at the conference hotel starting around 8PM. We have reduced the price of the autographed copies from $12,500 to $40...which is a deal and less than the Amazon price! If you have a previous copy of the book, bring it along and we will be happy to sign it.

This has been a fun project and we want to thanks the hundreds of people have contributed to its improvement over time. We hope that continues long after Al and I are gone.

Re: Tariffs?

Is a brokerage fee considered a tariff? DHL has been charging a brokerage fee in Canada for some time now, along with HST (VAT). I will try to pay HST directly to Canada Customs next time I order, and cut DHL out of the loop, if at all possible.

Re: SWR and PWR does not show lcd

In "hardware test," the transmission is working and displays PWR & SWR. Therefore, the T507 is OK.
In the "PWR/SWR display" menu, it is ENABLE.
In normal operating mode DIGI , the PWR & SWR indication does not appear on the display.

Re: Tariffs?

Hi All,
The tariffs on my last two shipments were applied by DHL.
Previously dozens of shipments to Mexico had no duty.
DHL asked for a proof of citizenship and added a brokerage fee.?
The total came to 20%.?
So the first signs of an US change may be when the package has been ordered.?
Mexico has a Deminimis but it was ignored.?
As Hans says wait and see. It is kind of sneaky,
The good news is that DHL does deliver with no damage and you can pay the driver.?
It's annoying but beyond Han's and QRP labs control and won't affect future orders from me.?
The QMX+ is still a bargain. The tariff on Japan is more important in my opinion,
as that will really affect the future of Ham radio. It may be good for US domestic manufacturers, but
bad for distributors and individual hams. Also domestic manufactures use China parts....
so all of this is very inflationary.??

Re: ProgRock2 programming??

Good morning Alan (I guess good day for you),
I haven¡¯t made any modifications to the equipment as yet. I¡¯ve got to find/order a 5v regulator and then put it in the circuit. The series capacitor will be easy below the crystal socket. Plenty of room under the chassis. I really appreciate your help and will update you when I follow through on your advise.
Have a great weekend,

Tom,

Hopefully that has not damaged the Progrock.

But I'm fairly sure the output of the Progrock has a positive voltage on it.
I suggest you try with a series capacitor, maybe 10n.
Then no damage is likely.

Of the two connections on the crystal socket one is used to inject the Progrock's output, maybe to the grid of a valve (tube). The series capacitor will be inserted here.
The other one must be disconnected and supplied with your 5 volts for powering the Progrock. Did you do this?

I've added my headset adaptor to the Wiki page, /g/QRPLabs/wiki/39099/219907
?
I did it for my Heil headset but it also seems OK for PC headsets with separate headphone and microphone plugs.

Re: shorted PA on TX, dead SMPSU?

Dan, a high probability for a broken controller. Do you have a sharp tip for your DMM to probe voltage at a pin of the controller?
Driving 300 mA you may check voltage drop from Vdd connection to the mainbord to each of the five Vdd pins of the STM32. If high current is flowing into the STM32 you should see a drop of much more than 10 mV. Last proof would be to remove the STM32 and check resistance Vdd - GND.

If your power and SWR indicators are not working, please check that they are enabled in the menu.? If they are enabled, you may have a bad connection at T507 such that the processor can't read the power and swr.
The terminal Hardware Tests- Diagnostics can test transmit and show the Power and SWR.? If these read values for Power and SWR then T507 is fine.

CPU barely warmed at 200mA, and at 300mA I got a voltage drop to 2.5v and the CPU did warm slightly. I couldn't detect any other components warming.?

Re: QMX and power bank PD

I received the cable and voltage monitor yesterday. Both appear to be good quality for the price paid. I should have the power bank by the end of next week.
?
Noticed though that the 25k one doesn't have PD. I mistakenly thought it did. It does output 12v 3a though so should be OK with the PD USB cable?
?
In half a mind to return it and get the 27.5k one with confirmed PD 3.1, though its €142 vs €99.

Re: Tariffs?

de minimis treatment "shall not be available" for China, quote from a Feb 25th US article from npr.?
It would not be a surprise if that were to be extended to other countries.?

Hopefully this is the correct one as I ordered one a couple of days ago, after the earlier post ....

Moin Raijko,
?
Did you also experiment with a headset ? I would rather like to use a headset and As I understand the ones for Computers are too weak. By the way the Radtel one is not available actually and the alternative is more than 9 "Bucks".

DX Commander stated in the last video that tarrifs will not apply to his antennas as it is below certain price limit. We will see if it is true and if it will also apply to Turkey.?

Hi Jeff,

First of all, thank you for your reply ¡ª I really appreciate you taking the time to help!

In my previous post, I was experimenting with different input voltages using a bench power supply to see if the transmitter¡¯s voltage and power would change accordingly. My theory was that the output power should increase at least somewhat linearly with the input voltage. However, regardless of the input voltage (ranging from 10.8V up to 12.8V), the output power changed only 0.4W.

Roger,
This behavior could result from a cold solder joint in T507 or its associated circuitry.? Temperature can change its connectivity.

Re: #qmx #SSB Firmware beta 1_01_003 release #qmx #ssb

Hans,
?
I set the QMX to "practice" mode whenever I want to disable the transmitter and use the QMX as a receiver only in CW, DIGI or SSB mode.
This makes sense when I listen with a random non-resonant antenna and want to avoid transmitting in any mode, even the beacon.
Please maintain a simple way to disable the transmitter

1. Practice mode does not make sense in SSB I guess. When enabled in CW Keyer menu and SSB mode is selected it could be temporarily disabled and then when CW is selected again it could be automatically re-enabled.

I agree but I think this his already the case isn't it? Doesn't SSB ignore practice mode?
