Re: Another QMX+ became SSB capable
Hi Jack,
?
Did you go through the calibration cycle or just run with default calibration settings?
?
It's just that I can get my QMX+ to do a complete successful calibration run and resulting in distorted audio.
Running the rig with default calibration settings (returned it to factory default settings), I don't get audio distortion, but mic volume is low. Increasing the mic gain then generates undesirable background noise. But that's a desperate challenge is need to resolve...
?

From my experience, it seems random. I got it to complete to about 2000 on one occasion after tinkering with the band settings for 20m. Without changing anything else, the next run only got it about 600 and was not able to get another complete run.

The LPF graphs give the impression that the LPFs aren't working, that there is a short bypassing all the LPFs regardless of the band selected.
One check would be to look for the 3rd harmonic being transmitted.? Do you have a receiver with a waterfall display? A SDR perhaps?? Try a test transmission into a dummy load and see if you can receive it at the fundamental frequency and 3 times that, for example 7.074 MHz and 21.222 MHz.? The dummy load will probably radiate enough that you can receive the signal locally.? If you get a significant signl on the 3rd harmonic then the LPFs aren't working. ?
Difficult to see why, other than some major miswiring.

QMX+ low(ish) power output
Hi all, first off, thanks to Jeff Moore who helped my QMX midband, and noticed my silly mistakes.? Second off, I've just finished a QMX plus and am fairly happy with it except for the fact im getting 2-3 watts, leaning closer to 2 on all bands except 160m. I've reflowed all LPFs, PA, and tri toroids. Any ideas on where to look next? I dont think i have any failed finals or shorts.? |

It would be helpful to measure the voltage on pins 15 and 16 of the display connector (the backlight pins) or the resistor.? Is it 5v?? Or do you somehow have a higher voltage there?? I have a working QDX, REV-5 pcb, low band and would like to make it more bullet proof with the LTN20069 heatsink and 4 of the TN0110 transistors. I haven't seen any pictures of that. Are there some anywhere? My understanding is that I remove the BS170s and insert the TN0110s, but when folded down, would present their flat faces upward, on which the LTN20069 would lay, complete with a 3mm hole in the center to sandwich it all together. I have a teensie 12v fan to sit on top of the case, with proper holes in it.
?
I need more robustness due to using the QDX in the car, which can get hot. The TN0110s allow for higher voltage use, but I stick to 11.1V batteries because mobile antennas for HF whip around and the swr varies, adding further heat on the finals.
?
Any errors in my plan? I'll post pictures when I'm done.

I recommend using your voltage monitor to see what happens on the port with your 12V trigger cable, when you plug any one of the other ports into something.? Mine reduces the 12V port to 5V if I plug in a 5V device to its 2nd port.? Hopefully yours has independent port voltage switching.?

Or perhaps your T507 transformer is not properly soldered in, such that the CPU can't measure any forward/reflected power.
I have never seen the indicators malfunction in any of the firmware versions I have used, on either my QMX or QMX+ units, but it does depend on the T507 hardware is working properly.

Note that the receive S-meter and AGC meter do not work in DIGI mode, only in CW mode, because AGC is only implemented for CW.

Hans recommends using 2 simple silicon diodes in series in the power cable to lower the voltage, or you can use a buck or buck/boost converter.? Using 13.4V will eventually cause problems, like possible damage to your finals and to your power supplies.? If the supply voltage goes down lower than 12V during TX, it is still a problem, since it will bounce back up to a too-high voltage.? And if it droops to lower than 12V during receive, then it doesn't have the current capacity to properly power your QMX, and will cause operational problems.? ?
And if you weren't using that supply, good.? But you shouldn't use it for diagnosing the problem, either, unless you can turn it down to about 7V and set a 250mA current limit.
?
But back to the current problem -
If all is operating correctly, your current while pressing the button should go up to about 200mA for about 1 sec, then settle down to about 100mA after the processor starts up the SMPS supplies.? None of that appears to be happening.? Which means the 3.3V linear supply isn't even turning on - and that just requires hardware switching, so something is definitely broken.?
?
If you are up to doing some measurements, disassemble the QMX enough to remove the two power supply units, and test them independently using the procedure in the wiki. ?/g/QRPLabs/wiki/37128.? If one or both of these is bad (and you don't want to try fixing SMD stuff) you can order a new set from qrp-labs for $10.
?
Also on the main board, measure the resistance of the 12V, Vcc and Vdd pins with respect to board ground and with respect to each other.? These should all be at least a few k-ohms, if any is instead just a few ohms, that means something on the main board is shorting and needs to be found and fixed before installing and using new/fixed power supplies.
?
Or you can punt and send it to Jeff W1NC and he will fix it for you - but where's the fun in that?
Good luck - let us know how it goes.

QCX+ Menu 8.5 Ref frq
I would like to know if I can apply the following procedure to calibrate the Ref frq without GPS?
Using a QCX+ 20M Band I would go to WWV 15MHz and read precisely the frequency for a zero beat. If I read 15.003.00 could I modify menu 8.5 to read 25.005.000 with the TCXO and have a more precise QCX+?
