Re: Firmware nightmare — gibberish (!) help needed

Aha, Roger, thank you. I dragged-and-dropped. Using the Terminal app to get back to it, I'll try copy-pasting the file instead. I didn't attempt to delete the old firmware. Will report back.

Re: Firmware nightmare — gibberish (!) help needed

How are you copying the firmware?? Drag and drop has been problematic for some people.? Copying/cutting the source file and pasting to the destination is recommended.? Also, do not attempt to delete the old firmware from the QMX drive.

Re: Firmware nightmare — gibberish (!) help needed

Update... still no solution... but I was able to use the Terminal to enter the QMX's Terminal apps... I tried a factory reset, but it still booted into gibberish... So I then rebooted into the Terminal apps, and I selected the firmware function, and loaded "1_00_027.QMX"... but it rebooted into gibberish yet again. I tried that a few times, hoping that doing the same thing repeatedly would merit a different outcome, hi hi. No dice.
?
Any help would be appreciated!

Just finished QMX build and I can’t get my Mac to recognize the USB so as to upload firmware. ?I am powering with a 7v power supply. ?I am using USB c to usbA and then an adapter. ?Have tried two other cables with no success. ? I have seen all the tips on YouTube and also page 63 in the manual. ?Feel like I’ve wasted $150 on this radio and likely never to get it to work. ?I will try on a Windows machine if I can borrow one this week. ?Other than that don’t know what to do. ?

Firmware nightmare — gibberish (!) help needed

I attempted to update the firmware using my MacBook Pro. I followed the manual as follows:
?
  1. I navigated to the firmware menu choice and clicked "TUNE"
  2. Then I used a USB-C cable to connect to my Mac, and the drive appeared on my desktop no problem
  3. Then I copied the new file (yes, unzipped, named "1_01_003.QMX") to the drive
  4. It copied over no problem; and then it rebooted into screens that look like the screenshots below
I have a second QMX, but I'm too spooked to try it with that one now!
?
Has anyone ever seen this before? Is there a way out? I'd rather not have to open the radio (I bought it assembled). Help! :)

Re: LIVE: SOTA+ is trying to do SSB on 10 GHz with a QMX

I was really hoping for coverage on the prototype? QMX+/- that uses SSB into a DSP with AI? to generate CW from the spoken word and decode? CW back to the spoken word.? Currently it? only understands? the Meskhetian Turkish dialect due to compatibility problems training the AI to phome interface.? Due to the limited memory and processing capabilities this had to be written in machine language and is not likely to be ported to the universal babelfish protocol any time soon.? It may be another year before we can even hope for an update.

Re: QMX+ Power Output Question

Thanks Jeff, I'll do that next chance I get!

QMX+ Rev3 and Rev1 interchangeability

I have ordered another QMX+ kit.? I assume it will be Rev3.? I have a Rev 1 front panel board already constructed.? Can I use this Rev1 front panel board on a Rev3 main board?

Re: QMX+ Power Output Question

That looks pretty good except for the higher bands. ?Verify the number of turns on lpf4 & lpf5. ?Also start with the turns evenly spaced around each toroid. ?The upper bands are very sensitive to that.
?
good luck.

Re: Windows WSJT-X audio input level adjustment

Yes found this to be useful. I adjusted all bands up by 10 dB. The settings were 54 and now 64. Just getting into the green zone on 6 metres and less than 40dB showing on the noisier bands.

Did you use The Talentcell for 9 V and 12 volts??
Possibly flaky BMS??

What will you be driving it with?? ?Max input 50Milliwatts!

You’ll have to figure out TX RX switching too

In my case, the CW-like stuff was coming from the GPS module. I remove the module and the CW stuff goes away.

That pulsing signal like CW is what I get too, so I don't think it's external. It doesn't change with tuning, so it seems like something getting injected into the audio.

If I disconnect the antenna, the birdies appear in the FT8 waterfall. When I connect the antenna, they disappear, presumably because the atmospheric noise swamps them. Maybe the AGC is a factor as well. I have a 1 meter loop and an active whip. The loop has much lower output on 10 meters. On 10 meters I see birdies with the loop but not with the whip. I am talking about the 500hz spaced birdies on FT8.

I find it interesting also that Hans mentioned 500hz birdies coming from the ADC built into the microprocessor. They affected his microphone for SSB. I can't make a connection between that and the RX birdies but it keeps rolling around in the back of my mind.

I think it can be corrected with filters or settings somehow. When I change to DIGI mode on the QMX, a lot of these noises disappear. In the image below, the bottom portion was DIGI, the top portion USB on the QMX+ (Pressed the Mode button just as green line appeared to change to USB RX)

Whatever filtering or settings are different between USB and DIGI, the RX looks a LOT better in DIGI. Notice the lines at 750, 1250, 1750, 2250, 2750 are non-existent in DIGI. The lines at 500,1000,1500,2000,2500,3000 appear unchanged by this, but there is definately something different between RX in DIGI and USB.
?
In this picture, I cycle back through USB to LSB. The bottom half is USB, the top is LSB.
Notice that when I switch between USB and LSB the tone or noise at 1500 and 3k both become more pronounced (stronger signal indicated by line turning red instead of yellow) Also the lines at 500 and 250 get stronger (solid yellow instead of broken yellow). Earlier today the LSB side was showing a pulsing tone at 750 almost like carrier from CW, but not in any CW pattern.. I did not get a screen shot of that while it was happening, but I now suspect it may have been an external signal. Note that all these signals I am highlighting are with the radio connected to a dummy load with a 36" piece of RG-8x

Michael, where did you connect the GND probe of your Meter to the QMX GND?
Could you measure VDD. You may use JP105 to contact VDD.
Could you measure the supply current from the beginning until the QMX stops?
Could you check temperature of IC101? But please take care it could be hot.
Thanks Ludwig! To answer the above questions:
  • When connecting to GND I used either a GND port on one of the JP nodes, or the bar on the edge of the board
  • Measuring through VDD showed the same results as when I measured R105 (which I had previously measured directly, one probe on either side of the resistor)
    • during normal/healthy operation, it showed ~3.3V, and during the frozen state it showed ~4.5V
  • I don't have an inline ammeter to measure supply current yet, but I have one arriving either today or tomorrow and can provide those readings at that point
  • Temperature of IC101 was cool enough that I could touch it with my fingertip and and it felt about the same as room temperature, so about 17°C / 63°F

Re: Tone or birdie every 500 Hz in USB mode

That confirms what I thought. It still seems like there is something firmware that could change how this behaves. Was just hoping there was a quick, easy solution. With these here decoding MFSK modes like MSK144 and VARA becomes difficult unless you have a strong signal, and MSK144 is a weak signal mode to begin with.?

Q501???
Nice find.
Reminds me why carefully inspecting the whole board under magnification is so important.?
