Re: PA 50W on RD16HHF1 #20m #50w

There is some magical thinking with regard to RD15hhf parts.
RTFM, in this case, the data sheet.

First its a 16V max part.
Can someone explain this? I'm trying to understand maximum values of RF transistors...and the RD16HHF1 datasheets I see don't say 16v anywhere. I see 20v and 50v ratings...and I see things about rules of thumb elsewhere...but how do I determine from the datasheet of an RF transistor what the maximum DC supply voltage is?

Thanks for any help with my learning!?

so that is not the original WSJTX ? If I am right my verson of WSJTX is 2.7.0 and I could not find, where to see the Hamlib version. I just wonder, if it would not be best tu uninstall what I have and download again.

Re: QMX Time Synchronisation Bug

Hi Carol
?
Thanks for this observation - I have just uploaded the latest SSB firmware, and done a hardware reset. I was wondering why the QMX+ RTC wasn't updating. Setting "software" mode cured it - update manual please, Hans.

I just did a quick test at 12.0v using Transmit in the diagnostics, all bands are around 5w except 60m this was 6.4w.

Just to emphasise this is just an observation as some people were have problems with finals whilst carrying out the calibration.

My first SSB contact using the devices was over the internal mic, and using my left paddle to "key" PTT.?? It works, but was less than ideal. Currently I am using SSB over the USB audio and running my mic and headphone through my computer while I wait for my digikey order to come in.

@Evan, thanks, I tested this as above, got 6.6k ohm gnd to Vcc and 2.3k ohm gnd to Vdd.?

@Stan I've ordered new SMPSU boards and I'll report back when I've tested as per your message

Re: Receiving AM?

The current QMX SSB receiver can receive AM because what is transmitted is the two sidebands and a carrier but it's not receiving it as AM, it's receiving as SSB using one sideband of the AM signal and ignoring the other sideband and the carrier.? You don't get the advantages of true AM reception where precise tuning is not required, and you have thrown away half of the data.
?
Try it with a rig that can receive SSB and true AM on a broadcast AM signal.? You will see that the AM signal can be received as SSB but you need precise tuning to get the correct tone, with AN you don't need precise tuning and the signal to noise is a little better.

Re: more WSJT-X touble

WSJT-X is frequently being updated and so is Hamlib.? The WSJT-X installation bundles a current version of Hamlib.
?
I found that for a recent version of Hamlib the QRP Labs radios has been changed from one version that handled all QRP Labs radios to separate "QRPLabs QCX/QDX" and "QRPLabs QMX" radios. To add to the fun only the QCX/QDX one worked with my QMX, the QMX one caused WSJT-X to shut down.
?
So if you have problems report the exact version and type of WSJT-X and the version of HamLib.? "The latest" isn't good enough, that's only the last one you found.
?
Once you find a hamlib version stay with it, and as I said I found that the QCX/QDX version works with QMX, the QMX version doesn't.
?
I'm using Hamlib version 4.6.1 2025-01-21T09:43:13Z, WSJT-X v2.8.0 20250314 Improved Plus.

That was just a really tiny part of their business but my HP48 calculator my dad gifted me in 1993 as I was studying engineering is still on my desk ! These were competently and truly engineered to last before planning obsolescence was a real thing...

Fascinating. ? ?Would be more so with :
supply voltages that blew them?
power outputs that blew them?
where the BS170’s came from?
how they were mounted?

AIUI the calibration has to be done over the full range of power output so I would expect it to be the same as normal non SSB transmission.

Just an observation re power output when calibrating.
?
I did another calibration with a digital SWR/ power meter hooked up, and noticed that the output was 6 watts at times during the calibration.
I was running 12 volts from a bench supply. It isn’t an expensive meter so I accept the power meter may also not be accurate.

Not sure if this could be a problem in some cases

Re: Errata for the Operations Manual

Hello Fred
?
I emailed these changes/errors through some months ago, but I see that they are unchanged in 1_00_027.

For 9 months, I was working on the SSB project. For at least the last half of that, I have been postponing handling any non-urgent items, until such time as I had finished the SSB project and the dust settled. I really appreciate your feedback, and I have not forgotten the corrections required; I will make these edits to the next version of the manual.?

Re: SSB Calibration blown finals

How did you deal with the reverse mounting/heat sink issue? I have purchased a set of those transistors just in case.?

SSB Calibration blown finals

开云体育

I have been running TN0110 finals and I calibrated my QMX+ with them. I wanted to see if the BS170 produced different curves so I installed BS170s and ran the calibration. When I was done, the finals were blown.

I wonder whether or not Hans is using the shaping when he is keying the radio for the cal sweeps.

The cal results didn't look substantially different from the TN0110 so I have gone back to the TN0110 and I am recalibrating.

I would rather Hans spend his time creating new features than correcting a <1% spelling error rate.
Having said that, yes, one of the first things I try to do is fix grammar and spelling errors in documents I produce.
