Re: Component challenge
#QMXplus
Hmm... completely silent on reception except for some loud beeps on some bands,
A short TX on 20m in a dummy load with a qrp watt meter in between shows no TX and no changes in amp use CAT control seems to work via USB-C, connected it to WSJTx and it works on everything the same as my QDX. I'll have to take it out of the box and check if I can see any visual defects first ?

Confirmation of Assembled Unit Voltage
Hi,
?
I have ordered an assembled QMX and am now waiting (more or less) patiently.
?
I do have a question on the units that are assembled by QRP Labs. I believe they are assembled for 12v input voltage, but could anyone confirm this for me please?

Re: Another Recommendation for Jeff Moore W1NC
My QMX has the VDD fail problem.? I doubt it is financially worthwhile posting from UK to USA even if Jeff is prepared to handle the inevitable paperwork.
?
I lack both expertise and a steady enough hand.? I do have a friend with both but it is a bit of an ask - so is there anyone in UK who offers a similar service?? Otherwise it looks like starting again with a new kit.

Re: SWR is too High!
The SWR is measured by the T507 and the components around it - you could check carefully to make sure that none of the nearby components has been disturbed.
SWR is also affected by the efficiency of T501 and the Low Pass Filters.? Differences in the low pass filters, such as soldering issues, component tolerances, and parasitic resonances can also affect power output level and SWR.? It would probably be good to check that only one of the LPFs is getting switched in as the bands are changed.? Easy to do this by measuring the 'line end' of the diodes: they should have a voltage (5V or more) for un-selected filters, and be 0V on the active filter.? If there is a short that is keeping one filter active all the time, even when another is switched in, could affect SWR on all bands.?? Since the SWR is high on all bands, the main issue is more likely at or around the 'choke' points where all the bands use the same hardware, which is the circuitry around T501 and T507.
In the diagnostic screen, is your PA bias drive at 30mA as it should be?

Good luck, Stan |
QDX is dead. USB interface nonfunctional. Flummoxed. Help, please.
I can't even communicate with it over usb. Red light not on. Draws only about 60 mA. Using PUTTY com pgm. Checked for 5 and 3v supplies. no problem there. Si5351 putting out 24 MHz or so. TCXO putting out 25 MHz.

Purchased new, already made. Worked great, then died. Love the little rig. Any ideas?
Thanks,

Re: QMX+: An interesting thing happened today with my QMX +
Hi Dan,
?
That's interesting. I have a mini J38 key plugged into mine. I wonder if leaving it connected to the Windows tablet PC is partially to blame? Or are there buffers which get loaded up when left turned on for a couple of weeks causing it to act up? Once I reset it, configured it and left it turned off overnight it's working fine again on both cw and Ft8.

Re: 50W PA for 17m
Very helpful! This is great information. I have a bunch of components in route and I think I should have everything to implement your recommendations, and maybe a bit more. Still trying to wrap my head around the bifilar winding on T3 and how that looks, physically, but I'll noodle on it a bit and see if I can understand what exactly you did there. Thanks again!

Re: QMX first time power up issue
Thanks Ludwig,
I have done the jumper thing and was able to see QMX in my file manager. On entering it I now see the EEPROM file as well as 1_00-27.QMX.
So all appears well and what's expected. But when killing the power to shut the radio down, I get a message on the laptop that it was not able to access QMX as permission was denied.?
Removing the jumper and staring up again, I get the 16 squares on the radio's LCD. Nothing more. I can't move on from there. Turning the brightness down via that blue variable cap only dims the squares. The radio also won't turn off using the encoder; I need to disconnect the power.

Re: Amazing 7 Days Order to Delivery
That's not bad,? but I did a bit better.
?
I placed my order was on Tuesday afternoon, package was at the front door in Canberra, Australia, on Monday afternoon of the next week. 6 days.
?
Excellent service from both QRP Labs and DHL.
?
I've just finished a 20m and 40m QCX+, now looking forward to doing 2x 50w amps and a QMX+.?

I think the best method is to increase track width of battery connections to bms board to 4mm and get rid of via method which can improve 8 times the voltage drop and cures the ground interruptions. My two cents. Barb,

After I have incorporated your latest suggestions - PCB looks like this.
Battery interconnections are 5mm thick (and short). For the connection between -U4 and +U5, since I had an opportunity of not compromising the ground, I still used stitching. For -U5 and +U7 I just used one sided 5mm thick short track.
connections between battery and BMS pads are now 4mm thick but one-sided.
?
I think this is the maximum what could be done in this compromise scenario without going to an expensive 4-layer PCB.

Thank you for your help!

Re: Component challenge
#QMXplus
Excellent!
From that display, the processor is working properly.
Let us know how the receiver check goes.
?
Next step might be running the diagonstics?through a USB cable
to a host computer as described in the operations manual.
You will need a 50 ohm dummy load for the transmitter checks,
and a bit more current from that power supply.

Thanks Jerry and you know what ?...? it did pass the smoke test :-) |
For the past two days I have been on the air as VA3DUA on a beautiful Canadian weather (2C/34F) from Toronto.
QMX+ and ABS v1.1-beta (ATU Board v1.1, Companion Board v1.2).
?
ATU tunes as expected, battery voltage drop is in the range of 0.1-0.2V.
?
After 4 hours of FT8 continuous usage battery charge dropped from 12.2 to 11.8V.
?
The only thing I can complain - in such antenna setup (attached behind the radio) - the SWR does not like human proximity :)

Re: 50W PA for 17m
Gus, ? Thank you for your inquiry. Attached please find the summary of my modifications. I hope it is not overwhelming. This is the information I have been sending to those people who inquired to me directly in the past year. ? The capacitors and the LPF inductor values in your e-mail are the same as mine, except, I¡¯ve been using the 1uF 50V capacitors, supplied in the kit, as is without any problem. ? Latest 10m band results: QCX+ with an extra LPF between QCX+ and the amp: 34.8W (QCX used with 13.8V supply voltage) ? QMX+ with an extra LPF between QMX+ and the amp: 27.8W (QMX+ built for 12V, used with 11.0V supply voltage) ? Please feel free to ask any questions any number of times. Please do not expect my replies to be technical though, as I am not an electric engineer. Friends call me a change-neer. I would like to thank Allison, KB1GMX, for her kind guidance and inspiring me to explore these modifications. ? 73, Aki, JO4MTH |
Re: QMX first time power up issue
Thanks for the suggestions. This is my progress:
I identified that 2nd pin on the left rotary encode was not making contact so soldered in a lead offset.
1. Inserted a 200 mA fuse in line with the power chord.
2. Set the voltage to 7.5V
3. sudo dmseg identified QRP Labs etc being connected
4. QMX appeared on the File Manager.
5. Opened it and noted it only contained one file, the EEPROMS folder. No firmware folder
6. I dragged in the firmware file that I had downloaded ?and extracted.
7. Got a message saying access denied.
?
So I shut down and restarted. This time I see no QMX as being connected in File Manager. sudo damseg still shows QRP Labs etc. On long pressing the encoder, I get 16 black squares on the LCD and that's all. To shut down I still need to disconnect the power.
?
Does the fact that I didn't get the firmware folder have anything ?to do with it? How can I load up the firmware now? Force load?
