Hi Ian ?
Yes, I just checked this, and I agree. There's a new bug that was introduced in 1_00_021 and persists. I'll fix it!? 73 Hans G0UPL |

Hi ?
No bug. It's a feature as described in the release notes. It is now a configuration, in the new VFO menu. You can to choose, which tune rates are used in your push-tune-knob cycle. These settings are also available on the LCD too. Set up to have the previous cycle (1kHz, 500Hz, 100Hz, 10Hz) would be like the attached screenshot. If you had a fresh QMX, or after a factory reset, this is how it would?be, by default. But in your case, just go in and edit the tune rate mask in this new VFO / VFO tune rates sub-menu screen.? 73 Hans G0UPL |
Hi Ian > Not able to select the lower digits when pressing Tune button? > briefly, i.e 7.074.00 the lowest selectable is 4kHz. But this is because it is now a configuration, in the new VFO menu. You can to choose, which tune rates are used in your push-tune-knob cycle. I would put bets on yours looking like the attached 1kHz.png. To make it behave the way it used to in earlier releases, just edit it to look like all.png. These settings are also available on the LCD too. 73 Hans G0UPL On Tue, Aug 6, 2024 at 5:06?PM Ian G4GIR via <g4gir.shack=[email protected]> wrote:

A brief comment on using Dual IF Filters, DIFF. I discovered the power of this when I got my ICOM-705. ICOM calls it "Twin Pass Band Tuning". I wish I'd known about it when I was working in the oil patch as I could have made a killing.
Without a panadapter locating stations is more challenging. The way to operate a DIFF radio lacking a panadapter is to select the widest filter BW and the largest overlap, then tune to the desired station at the desired tone and narrow the overlap. Once you have isolated the station you can narrow the filter BW to improve the SNR slightly. Have Fun! Reg |
¿ªÔÆÌåÓýHello Hans
?
I decided to re-do my T501 after seeing improvements with the QMX + I recently repaired for a fellow G.
?
On checking the Transmitter output after re-winding T501 I found that there was no output for the first test at 160m. Pressing the + moved to 80m and that was fine 5.1W. I pressed - to return to 160m and the power was restored 5.9 W. Cycling through all the other bands were OK and returning back to 160m was still OK. This was with .23 firmware installed.
?
?I cycled back to firmware .21 and all was OK on the first test on 160m . Re installed .23 and the problem re-appeared. Installed .24, and the same problem exists.

Re: QMX Frequency Offset?
Hello Steve & Steve So I'm a little confused... what do I need to do in the firmware, to make this work properly?? 73 Hans G0UPL On Tue, Aug 6, 2024 at 4:17?PM Steve W6WU via <w6wu.ars=[email protected]> wrote:

Re: QMX Frequency Offset?
Steve G4EDG,
?
Yes, CW-R with LSB displays the frequency correctly.
?
The operation that I thought would happen in CW Mode is that setting the sideband without changing to CW-R would be of no effect to the displayed frequency.? CW, of course, is neither transmitted on one sideband or the other and it is the receiver LO that is offset on a sideband to produce the desired audio tone; leaving the frequency displayed on the carrier.? I thought selecting LSB would have offset the the receiver by the amount of the currently selected filter /tone on that sideband leaving the displayed frequency on the carrier. However, it seems that this software implementation does not (currently).
?
Having said all that, this is not a deal breaker for me as I only need CW to work properly and have set the Sideband back to the default USB. My curiosity in exploring the features led down this path. However in the future is would be nice to have this sorted out in a proper way - whatever that is.

Encoder fix that worked for me
#qmx
#rotaryencoder
I know that many of us have encountered issues with the QMX tuning encoder giving strange results, like large jumps or only counting in one direction.
?
After cleaning up a solder bridge between one of the pins on the two pin side and the encoder body the problem went away for me for a day, then returned.?
?
What did work for me seemingly permanently was to exercise the encoder several full revolutions in either direction while holding the stem button down. I don't know what the internals look like on these but that has 100% cleared the wonky behavior. It has been 2 weeks at this point with no more erroneous encoder behavior.
?
Hopefully this will also save some folks from needing to replace the encoder or fully dismantle one for cleaning / troubleshooting.

Hi all I released firmware 1_00_024 for QMX and QMX+. You can download the .zip file at and the operating manual for this version is also available. The main changes: Loads more CW filters: 54 filters in total! Reginald Beardsley suggested a set of very good cascaded filters could be formed using the existing 300Hz and 500Hz bandwidth filters, with rather little effort. In principle cascading two filters with offset center frequencies produces a new, lower passband filter with a center frequency mid-way between the two and a narrower passband. This is important also because it produces very nice-sounding narrow filters, compared to a single narrow filter which has higher delay.? As an example consider the attachment; this is not a simulation or theoretical model, it is an actual experimental measurement using an -86dB (s7) signal source and observing the output amplitude of the generalized Gortzel filter, then plotting a graph in a spreadsheet. It shows a 300Hz bandwidth filter centered on 500Hz (red line); a 300Hz bandwidth filter centered on 650Hz (blue line); then the resulting 150Hz wide passband centered on 675Hz in bold purple color, when the red and blue filters are cascaded.? The original filters plus the combination filter pairs produce a total of 54 different filters as follows:
I recommend reading the new section of the operating manual which starts at page 20.? Tidied up UI behavior particularly in regard to RIT I made a lot of tweaks to the QMX UI experience; mostly around the RIT, as was discussed here a few days ago. Now when you are in RIT mode the RIT adjustment display uses only the left 6 characters of the bottom line with a cursor under the adjusted digit; this leaves 3 spaces (minimum) for decoded CW even if the RTC is switched on. Additionally you can now get back to main tuning mode without cancelling RIT, by double clicking the left button. And a single click of the left button puts you temporarily in Keyer Speed mode, on exiting that you come back to RIT mode; you can also long-press the right encoder to get stored messages while still in RIT mode.? There were some other improvements around decoded CW; I discovered the decode buffer doesn't display from the right place when the RIT mode is engaged which leads to a delay before you can see the most recently decoded characters. Another thing I noticed and solved was that the rightmost character of the decoded CW always ends up a space, after the inter-word timeout or the end of the transmission. Nobody wants to see that empty space and it only deletes one character of our precious display real estate! So I delayed the display of the character to be right before the next REAL decoded character comes in. Furthermore there were some cases where leaving message mode or Speed mode or something, didn't re-display the full decoded CW until the next decoded CW character came in. I think it all feels a lot nicer now.? Additionally, there's a new menu called "VFO" which contains sub-menus where you can individually enable/disable any of the VFO tuning rates, VFO modes or RIT tuning rates; this means you can customize what happens when you press the tune knob to change frequency step, according to your own favourite sub-set.? CW decoded characters additions BK, AS, KA and some more punctuation as described in the recent forum thread; and since some items like ( have the same pattern as a prosign (in this case KN), there's also a menu switch where you can choose whether you want to display the punctuation or the prosign in preference, when there is an ambiguity.? IQ mode for panadapter I altered the IQ mode so that when enabled, it now just streams raw I and Q audio channels directly to the USB audio interface, but the CW transceiver operation is otherwise unaffected, full CW transmit and receive capability remains.? Other small fixes No more display corruption on exiting the System Config menu on the LCD; fixed the tip/ring swap on straight key configuration; switched off CLK2 (the TX oscillator) during key-up in semi-QSK mode.? Full list: 1.? Added many more CW filters and CW filter options in the filter menu 2.? Bug fix: Display corruption on exiting system config menu on the LCD 3.? Add BK, AS, KA as prosigns, and other punctuation 4.? Change "IQ Mode": now radio functions normally, but raw I & Q are streamed out not demod audio 5.? Add VFO menu with UI masks for VFO Mode, VFO tune rate and RIT tune rate 6.? Bug fixes and improvements in display and behavior of RIT and decoded CW 7.? Bug fix: fix incorrectly swapped tip/ring meaning in Straight key mode 8.? Switch off CLK2 carrier during key-up between Semi-QSK Comments welcome! 73 Hans G0UPL |

Chinese 49erOn the one hand its a dial controlled VFO and perfectly capable of acting as a crystal oscillator.? I'm not sure how the 49er deals with receive offset but replicating that that may a slight complication for using the VFO. On the other hand pressing on as far as one of the QCX models will actually make operation simpler, performance better and provide you with more power on 40m? . .? ?Unboxed they are pretty cheap these days Good luck in either case |
