Re: #QMX Glitchy encoders? Not any more ?
#qmx
Glad that's worked for you, Walter. Job well done, Sir. The buttons on my rig behave well so I didn't add any caps to those.
?
As for the encoders; They do deteriorate with age as the contacts become dirty/worn and the wipers lose their pressure. Some are sub-par from the factory and it sounds like that's what you've got there.?

Cheers,?

Re: CW decoder doesn't recognize /BK?
Although it's true that technically BK is an abbreviation, so many people send it as a prosign without a space between the B and K that is has become a sort of de-facto prosign. If it's easy to add BK as a prosign to the decoder, it's probably worth doing? On Mon, 5 Aug 2024, 08:16 Jon G4IVV via , <jonathan=[email protected]> wrote:

Thanks for posting this modification. One of the main reasons I haven't been using my 1st rev QMX is because the glitchy encoders really got on my nerves!
?
I'll be adding the caps shorlty and very much look forward to the improvement :-)

Thanks,

Re: CW decoder doesn't recognize /BK?
Hello Willem There isn't currently a way to add prosigns.? The decoder currently supports 0-9, A-Z and the following prosigns and punctuation only: Punc/Prosign? ?Displayed? Sequence?? Dash? ? ? ? ? ?/? ? ? ? ? /../.? ?Dah-dit-dit-dah-dit Question? ? ? ??? ? ? ? ? ..//..? Dit-dit-dah-dah-dit-dit Dot/period? ? ?.? ? ? ? ? ./././??Dit-dah-dit-dah-dit-dah Comma? ? ? ? ? ,? ? ? ? ? //..//? Dit-dit-dit-dah-dit-dah Note that due to the contentious issue of whether Dit-dit-dit-dah-dit-dah should be called SK or VA, a switch for this is provided in the CW Decoder menu, the setting is called "SK or VA" and can be selected to be SK or VA. 73 Hans G0UPL On Mon, Aug 5, 2024 at 4:40?AM Willem VA2WLM via <wkjagt=[email protected]> wrote:

CW decoder doesn't recognize /BK?
I like using the QMX to practice my CW because it decodes it and shows me my errors, or for example when my pauses are too long within words. One thing I noticed is that it decodes some prosigns (like SK, KN), but not all. One that's very common is BK, especially for POTA. Not really a big deal, but I was wondering if maybe I missed something, or if there's a way to add prosigns. |

Select and Exit caps placed. Can't see any double presses any more, so looks like more success.?

Ronan, Manfred,
I don't think age has anything to do with it. My early (May 2023) Rev 1's had the glitch from the beginning. My Rev3, Rev 4, and QMX+ Rev 1 all have the glitch. It seemed to be worse with the earliest firmware.
?
I have just put the 10 nF caps in and the glitches are completely gone! Before this mod, scrolling through the Menu steps were frequently skipped semi-randomly, especially when turning fast. Occasionally it would even go backwards.?
I have also seen unintentional double clicks with the 'Select' and 'Exit' buttons, so I wonder if caps on these might also stop these double clicks. I think I will try it.?

Re: 50W power amplifier initial power up.
I suggest? that Assume the amp will draw current? equivalent to? the? A for Watts = 2 x power out expected? (your guess ) then select a fuse 20% higher
That will provide a back up for any current limiting? (or not) it seems not in your power pack.? ?
The fuse may or may not? save the mosfets if? something goes south.? But will protect most other components.
These? IRF 510 amps from Hans don't have a reputation for thermal runaway.??
BTW on sport aircraft like sail planes, the? fuse is often put Right on the battery terminal. This can save a lot of tears later - esp for lithium based batteries. ?

Re: VDD to Ground - before I start again
As Ron said whenever there is a serious VDD to GND short, it¡¯s usually less than an ohm. ?On all the rigs I¡¯ve fixed, it was about .4 ohm. I always build a QMX or QMX+ so that I can test the cpu very early in the process. ?I install the power connector, the 2 SMPS boards and the whole front panel. ?I power it up at 6.1 volts and load firmware. ?

Thanks Chris and Doug. I did short it to ground when I completed the build and noticed the issue and confirm that this did turn it on but the ability to turn it off would be nice also.
?
Somehow I overlooked the part number on the schematic, I confess I did look several months ago but didn't see it then and I have not looked since. Sometimes we don't see the obvious in front of us I guess. Thanks again? |
Hidden function ... or was I imagining?
Today's firmware update to 1_00_023 ended up successful, but had me worried for a bit.
Everything seemed to go OK until this happened: My windows file copy software does a consistency check after every copy and when I copied the _023.QMX file, it read the copied file and responded with "hash mismatch." Then it quit, and so did any indication of the QMX being a Windows file system. [In hindsight, this makes sense because reading the loaded QMX is really not like reading any other file, and Hans tells us in the Ops Manual that it's not really like any other Windows file.]
?
The BOTHERSOME thing was that the QMX wouldn't start up. I pressed and held the left/VOL encoder several times. Nothing... I tried the USB cable again. Nothing... Then, I wondered if Hans had implemented some alternative way of starting a non-responsive QMX.? Hmmmmm?
?
I pressed both encoders at the same time and VOILA! it started.
?
THANKS Hans! ... or, maybe I was drinking? I had only one beer with lunch.?

Re: VDD to Ground - before I start again
Mark, 9K is what most are seeing, but my brother recently measured his brand new QMX+ board out of the bag and found 262R Vdd to ground. He installed the DC input connector?and the two power supply boards and temporarily shorted the PWR ON point to ground and the thumb drive came up on the computer ready to accept firmware. It seems the MCU Vdd short to ground measures 1R or so when it's there. So he continued his build (still in progress). Not sure why it has the lower than normal resistance on Vdd but it isn't the MCU in his case. Seeing 916R you can probably proceed, but you might want to do as he did and verify the MCU is OK before investing all the time in building it... Good luck .. 73 .. .Ron On Sun, Aug 4, 2024 at 7:38?AM Mark via <mark.g0mgx=[email protected]> wrote:

Re: Is it possible to run the QMX without the SMPS boards?
Hi Chris,
?
How do you get past the initial SMPS fault that stops the QMX at the hardware diagnostics screen?
My QMX stops when the firmware determines that the boards are not present as described in the manual:
?
?
I ordered replacement SMPS boards a few days back and I want to get a head start on any additional troubleshooting that may be needed for the rest of the transceiver while I wait on the order.
