Re: QMX Hi Band Noise Problem

Mikael,

Is your radio factory assembled or a kit?

Re: ARRL Technical Innovation Award.

FYI??must be received at Headquarters by March 31. Additional support information must be received at ARRL Headquarters by April 15.
Don't worry about address, phone number, and email. He has been previously nominated.? You can just list his call G0UPL

I am in the process of nominating Hans.

What should I use for his address, phone and email address - his QRZ entry seems to be out of date.

Excellent.. thank you.

Re: Possible short? QMX 20-10 Rev 3.

Hi Scott,

T507 does provide a DC short to the BNC connector.? It is normal.

Possible short? QMX 20-10 Rev 3.

Before I add the BNC connector I am measuring a short between the BNC centre and ground. I suspect this is not correct but I'm not certain?? Is is possible this was caused by the neigbouring transformer T507 which was the last addition?? I'm not sure how the transformer works so perhaps the short is meant to be there?? Hesitant to proceed without mention of this in the manual so I suspect I've created this somewhere.

thanks all

Scott

QMX No Power On -- I Hear a Click But NO USB Link to Computer

Sorry to bring this up, but I've seen threads with no solution.

Having just completed what I thought was a very careful build of the QMX, I get no response other than a clicking sound both when I plug in the power cable, and when I depress the left pot.

Tried two brand new USB C cables, and the computer doesn't recognize the QMX so I can download firmware. Screen is totally blank at this stage.

Any ideas gratefully appreciated.

Re: Bricked my QMX?

Hi Don.?
?
Just to be sure, you had mentioned that you had been using your "standard 12v supply" with your QMX. Does that power supply provide exactly 12v??
?
The reason I ask is that my "standard" power supply I use for my home based QRO rigs delivers about 13.8v, which is too much voltage for the 12v QMX!?

A “Must read me First” reference for QDX/QMX users

In my quest for understanding “What the %#@&?am I doing!” while Googling about the Internet, I came upon the following resource that most (perhaps all) users of the digital modes (Using the QDX and QMX in particular) will find quite worthwhile.?

There are a half dozen additional (mode specific) papers by the same author (ZL1BPU) which may be equally informative and useful as well. I haven’t yet, but will likely be reading all of them.?

With 5-band WAS/WAC and DXCC completed on my QDX, I’ve burned out on FT8… It’s tme to try for some digital rag chews. :-)

Re: 50w QCX amp with grounded ptt (elecraft k2)

W8DIZ “Diz,” from Kits and Parts SK, R.I.P had a really cool way to do this-

Use a 78L05 regulator tied to the amp B+ in (~22V in the QRP Labs case)

Tie the output of the regulator to amplifier PTT (5V active high)
Connect the gnd pin of the regulator to the PTT circuit of the rig.?

So when the PTT provides a ground to the regulator, it switches on, and 5V is used to activate the 50W amp.

I used this idea to build a 50W amp and one of Diz’s 5Watter rigs together in a case. At 12V in, it makes about 25W, and runs cool.

50w QCX amp with grounded ptt (elecraft k2)

Hey all,
I suspect this has been asked and answered, but I cannot find it.

I have an elecraft k2 with an amp keyer jack that is an open drain output and is pulled to ground during transmit. I would like to add the QCX 50w amp. I understand what it required electrically, but I'm curious what the most practical way to connect the two would be. Is there a way to tap 5v off of the amp, so the keyer ckt can be passive?

I'd like to maintain QSK capabilities.

Thanks in advance,
Casey

New Chat: QCX revision 4 build problems #chat-notice

Group Notification

A new chat has been created:

Hello,

I've finally finished my QCX (40m), which I purchased in 2019. Surprise, surprise it does not work.

I'm hoping it is not due to me having to substitute NTE490 transistors for three of the BS170 transistors that were not supplied with the kit.

It powers up, and the LCD backlight, lights up and I have selected the band.

Alignment part one seems to go okay, with the peak, being at 05 with the graph most of the way to the right of the screen. The capacitor is neither fully open or fully closed. The one issue is that there is no sound at all.

I looked at doing the next part of the alignment, but I do wonder if (because there is no sound), there is any point in trying. The IQ Balance screen shows a rapidly changing level, and I am guessing that should not be happening.

I looked at the test menu - in particular 9.3 and 9.4.

9.3 (Audio Ch.1) is at 00,001 and does not change with rotation of the AF gain.
9.4 (Audio Ch. 2) is mostly at 00,000 but rarely flickers to 00,001.

So, if it is an incompatibility with the transistors, I will try once more to get the exact ones, once back on land.

In the meantime I will start work on the QCX Mini for 20m which I have had for ages too. If you're curious whats taken me so long, its mostly fear of winding that evil transformer. Hopefully it will be a little tidier for 20m!

73!

Paul.

Re: Mid-band QMX?

That might be a typo in my notes. I used the same torroids in the QMX kit.? For L401 I used the one from the high band kit.

Re: Inexpensive Scope for Troubleshooting QMX

I must agree with you about the 465.? I had one on a cart that I used nearly daily for 20 years.? Even when I had a Tek 7904 with all sorts of plugins, it was just too big for my shack workbench, so the 465 was never far away.

Re: Inexpensive Scope for Troubleshooting QMX

Michael,

An oscilloscope will be a great addition to your work bench. A quality instrument should serve you well for decades to come. My Tektronix 2465 has been a great performer for me for 30 years now.

While you are shopping/deciding, consider another little tool that will also prove to be extremely useful to you.

A simple RF voltage probe that attaches to your DMM can be purchased as a kit for about $15. A perfectly suitable one can be made from junkbox parts. Consisting of only a capacitor, a resistor and a diode, it is a very quick project? but very handy to have in the workshop!

I have a Tektronix 485 which WAS the hot scope at the time. I still use it when my Siglent 1202X-E is having problems with the signal. I also have the P9201 900 MHz FET probe for much less signal loading than the standard probes. Needs to get power from the 485 which has two power jacks for just that.

Re: No CW sidetone on QMX

Now today, no sidetone on CW! No power out indication.

Found it! Works into dummy load! A..ha! SWR protection on, antenna gets out of tune when power off, xmt and transmitter shuts off, "S" shows between last freq number and DIGI/CW and all you get is clicks. Tune antenna, reset protection or turn off and VOILA! Sidetone, power out and S-meter!

Okay. I got this!
