Re: QMX - Any progress on key clicks please?

Hans - It looks like we have a real problem for many (most?) of us! Perhaps it is a bigger issue than we all realised. I welcome your comments please, meanwhile, back in the desk drawer it goes as, sadly, unusable.

Everyone - Thanks for posting your settings.

Rather than reproduce my settings here, I will just say that I am using the same settings as Adrian YO3GFH, having copied them from an earlier thread. I have also tried disabling the AGC and copying Chris Bolton's settings - it makes no difference. Audio thumps exist after (not before) every dit and dah (whether at 2 wpm or 30 wpm.)

Please can we fix this asap?

Best wishes all,

Daimon.

QDX - stops on 10m after a few seconds

Hello there :)

I built a QDX (PCB Rev 5 and firmware 1_10) for 20, 17, 15, 12, 11 and 10m (12 volts version) that works well (rx & tx) on 15m, but fails running on 10m.

The QDX is connected to a Debian Bookworm system.

For me it looks like QDX usb resets as soon as it starts transmitting.

/var/log/syslog right after booting the system:

As you can see the port changed from /dev/ttyACM0 to /dev/ttyACM1, and its not recognized correctly anymore. Also the "Soundcard"-devices aren't available anymore ... sometimes the input device "survived", but the output-device is gone each time.

Any hints what to do/test?

Cheers,

BTW Martin,

I had a really good laugh at your Ship of Theseus reference. Clever! Let's hope that changing out that Stereo ADC will be the last of it. Looking forward to seeing your All OK message.

Re: QMX no Rx after a few days of operation

Got my QMX on Monday March 10th. Did 2 QSO's 20m.
CQ'ing again on tuesday - no rx at all. Transmit is fine to me.

1 - board revision: Rev3 so Hans told me - got it assembled from QRP-Labs and do not open it.
2 - Bands: low, 80-20 m
3 - build supply voltage: 12 V
4 - FW version: 1_00_017
5 - modifications: none

I am slightly frustrated...
cheers - Raimund

Re: QMX - Any progress on key clicks please?

I think the thumps are coming from the AGC and you disabled it. increasing sidetone volume to 60 also somehow helps.

I only just started to test my QMX with a paddle a few days ago.? Initially I experienced the severe sidetone clicks that have been reported with the latest and previous version of firmware.? I made a few arbitrary changes to the settings as follows and the clicks have vanished completely!?

Re: What Mods to Early Rev 1 QCX Mini

Hi Greg,

I bought an unbuilt kit of the same vintage recently.
It requires a capacitor on the power input to prevent potential damage from supply spiking.
D33 cathode to 0V.
10uF tantalum or electrolytic.
Described and shown in QCX-mini assembly Rev1.05. Pages 67 - 69.

If you¡¯re installing AGC module there are a couple of wires to be added, information in AGC manual.

Re: QMX no output on 12 and 10 meters #output #power #qmx

Hello Emory,

12, 11, and 10 meters share the same low pass filter (LPF).? This would point to a problem there.? The most common is one of the toroid connections did not burn through the enamel.? This assumes that the configuration is correct.? I suggest the following:

1 - Update to the latest firmware from the QRP-Labs web page:?

2 - Do a factory reset

If the above does not solve the issue, then:

3 - Verify that the LPF diode selection is working correctly.? This also verifies that the toroid connections are good, as the toroids are used to conduct the DC bias.? The LPF diodes are D508 through D513.? D510 and D513 select the 12/11/10 meter LPF.? The banded end (Cathode) should be close to 0 volts.? The other four should be close to the supplied voltage to the QMX.? This test is while receiving, not transmitting.

The next steps would depend on your findings from the above.? Please post your results, including the version of the firmware.

Re: RF preamp for power amp - HF and 6 mtrs. Magic silicon does all.

Just a note that this issue of? some of Granberg's pronouncements and inconsistencies is still being looked at.

1.? John Z's comment about? Adsl? Line drivers applies to some? Texas chips . I think the part numbers start MHD.? Anways they can be driven from 24 V and?
the indications are they would produce about? 6W rf out up to 30 Mhz.? The 30 Mhz is from the Tx industries'? datasheet.

2. Some basic work on the? phasing choke used in the Kees Talen? 16 W RF amp? (13.8 V supply) shows that the? ?BN 43-302 appears to only just work.? That's to say? it appears to be near saturation and that would cause the impedance to fall away badly.? This? would lead to power from the primary of the? OP transformer being dumped into the series impedance of the RF choke.? ? I need to do some LTspice simulation? on this aspect (but bear in mind LTS treats magnetic components as completely linear ). H? Granberg? ?(EB and AN series from Motorola) provided no discussion of? Pt choke design anywhere I can see - eg impedance requirements versus the parasitic impedance of the transformer primary it was driving or any criterion like that.?

Will report in due course.? TEF

QMX no output on 12 and 10 meters #output #power #qmx

New QMX build with no output on 12 and 10 meters?? Below measured on QRP watt meter and dummy load.
20 - 4.5 watts
17 - 4
15 - 2.5
12 - 0
11 - 0
10 - 0
Checked and re-checked, did not find any solder bridges and LPF's all seem ok?
Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.? Thank you? 73? Emory? WM3M

Re: QMX - Any progress on key clicks please?

My QMX running .017 is also very unpleasant to use on CW due to the thumps. No amount of massaging of the settings has made it any more pleasant to use. I¡¯m hoping one day that the solution will be found but until then, it¡¯s an FT8 rig in my shack and I¡¯m still using my KX1, K1 and PFR3 CW rigs, all perfectly thump-free.

CW operators are careful listeners and we seek an enjoyable auditory experience.
Let¡¯s wait and see if QMX can deliver one.?

QRPBuilder new PTO development boards

Gang,

We have added two bare boards for use with our PTO. While I was working on designing the PTO, I used the Norcal Tin Ear circuit for the testing. I have some of these 40m receiver boards available for anyone that wants to experiment with a PTO.

We also have an option 2 to the prototype PTO project. It is a 4.25" sq. board that uses only the TinEar oscillator with 375 pads for your design and expansion. All the power and I/O connections are contained on the board.

Either bard board is available for $12 w/free conus delivery. Both options are described at:

Re: What Mods to Early Rev 1 QCX Mini

It¡¯s on the QCX Mini page on QRPLabs website. Use instructions for Rev1&2 but not the addenda for Rev2. The instructions to add a 10 uf tantulum or electrolytic capacitor to the voltage regulator are in the document. Be careful to never short the 5v rail to ground. Doing so will cause this regulator to fail shorted and it will put 12 volts on the 5 volt rail and destroy all the 5v components. There is a workaround to replace the 5v regulator with a 78M05 that doesn¡¯t have this issue.?

Good luck. ¡73¡ Ron

Re: #output #power #qmx QMX High Bands - Tweak Output RF Power #output #power #qmx

Hello again Jeff and the group.

Got Terminal mode 'smart' earlier today and ran LPF sweeps.? Saved the graphs.

Then tweaked the windings, one toroid at a time for the LPF 1 pair, which are for 17 and 15 Meter Bands.

Opening up the spacing on L508 (the upper one of the pair) to more closely match the provided picture in the instructions did not make a difference in the power output.?
The tweaks here were very, very small.

Opening up the spacing on L 512,? DID the trick. My spacing is a bit more spread out than the provided picture, BUT now I have the following:

20? ? 3.94
17? ? 3.41
15? ? 3.43
12? ? 3.69
10? ? 3.85.

LPF sweeps of 17 and 15 meter bands show virtually identical graphs, with the footer intercepting the -30dB line a bit sooner for one and a bit later for the other. There is a bit of 'an 'up pip' (maybe 1dB) on 17 around? 40Mhz that wasn't there before but it is still way below -30dB.??

It will do just fine for how I expect to use my QMX.?

Hi Greg,

Here is what I would do:
1) check all the caps in the lpf section - make sure you installed the correct values in the right places.
2) double check the turns on each toroid
3) if all above is good, I adjust each band¡¯s set of toroids. ?I use a small plastic tipped tuning tool. ?(A pointy end of a bamboo skewer works also). ?I don¡¯t use metal.

here is what I do for each band:
identify the two toroids that are configured in the lpf band configuration (in the terminal program). ?Before making an adjustment, note the power out. ?Start by reducing the spacing of one toroid, check power, it if increases, keep squeezing turns until it doesn¡¯t help more. ?If all turns are tightly squeezed together, you may want to rewind that one with one more turn and try again. If squeezing turns decrease power, then try to increase separating the distance between each turn and keep separating turns until no improvement. ?Do one toroid at a time

then do the same thing for the second toroid for that band.

its easy to identify which toroids go with each band. ?The default band config for a hi band unit is 0, 1, 1, 2, 2, 2. ?There are only three low pass filters for 6 bands. ?So there is sharing. ?0 is the lowest frequency lpf. Those toroids have the most turns. ?1 is the middle lpf. ?2 is the highest frequency lpf. ?It has the least turns.

Re: QMX - Any progress on key clicks please?

Interesting discussion. To wit:

Part 1:

- Well like ALL of the responses so far, I also am affected with clicks that are there no matter what combinations of settings I use, with some settings worse than others. AND no matter what settings I may be using to make it seem better; heard signals and noise generally impinge the usefulness of any particular settings I may be using. (And no; I have NOT tried everyone else's settings in their *entirety* to compare ALL of the various ideas.....sorry I need to sleep, eat, make merry, and so forth during my days and nights....hi hi)

- i.e. Sadly, I think the problem is more fundamental than any particular combination of user settings as the solution will be found in the SDR code. Perhaps when Hans finds a fix, I will be proven wrong about my gut feelings. I hope I am. Truly.

Part 2:

*** I would ask another question; Is there ANYONE using this radio that does NOT hear clicks when running CW at 20-25 wpm and hooked to an antenna ? IF SO; I'd sure like to know what those particular settings are !

i.e. Go ahead prove me dead wrong ... please, as I want this radio to be more than an FT8 radio.

es vy 73 OMs de "baab" w9ya - QMX serial number 100 running .017 firmware. (I bought mine the 1st evening they were available.....so yeah; it's a rev1 board.)
