Re: QMX dead

I tried to post a link for the schematic but it does not work...grrr! There is a link on this forum which produce great if not faint diagrams. Another on the same thread "QMX schematics" found a way to make the traces more bold. Try the search above with QMX schematic and see whatcha get.

Re: Fldigi and QMX successful???

I'm just getting to wringing out the QMX after overcoming a few assembly issues.? It is NOT working here with fldigi 4.1.20 under Windows 10.?

Using flrig as a TS-480SAT, it's working fine with JS8Call.? Nothing particularly odd there that I haven't seen with the QDX.? Same setup with fldigi, I don't get sufficient audio out and, consequently, to power output.? On TX, the QMX's transmit indicator under the VFO indicator is two dots, indicating PTT activated and insufficient audio drive.? RX is good.

I've double checked audio device settings - they're the same here as with another rig with an internal, USB sound device - and twiddled Windows' exclusive access selections for sound devices to no effect.

Haven't figured it out, yet.? What are you seeing?

That's pretty cool.? Thanks for sharing, Timothy.

Re: QMX RF sweeps

Mike,
I think Karl is asking whether all the holes are tested to prove that
they are plated all the way through.
Fixturing for that can be done, but it does cost a bit.
That said, I think his problem is probably elsewhere.

I will say that 90% or more of the issues I have and see with others
are with the toroids and soldering issues with them.

The description of the 6 layer pcb starts at page 5 of the assembly
manual. I interpret it as saying that all holes are through plated.

The puzzling thing that nags me is there is so much that is working so right from the beginning. Mostly because I have studied this forum to avoid the pitfalls found by others. Things like the drain shorts on the PS boards. The encoder shell contacting the power receptacle and getting the wrong component in the right place.

The biggie is the soldering technique requiring a differnt tool. The right tool was easy and then so was the soldering.

Re: Stripping enamel insulation off of magnet wire & Rotary Magnet Wire Strippers

I know what follows helps no one today unless you come across some 50 years old enameled wire... We'd simply hold the tip of the wire in an open flame for just a moment then quickly plunge it (the wire not the flame) into a thimble size amount of alcohol and POOF! The enamel would shatter into the alcohol leaving behind a pristine copper wire. It was an old QST suggestion which worked very well back then. Today however, "enameled" wire isn't enameled but coated with polymers that don't succumb to the old technique.

Re: #qmx Current consumption varies on wide range #qmx

Under the Terminal/Diagnostics Are you getting a Transmit Voltage showing Q507 is being turned on.

#QDX QRPP switch implementation #qdx

Hello happy QRPers

Just want to share the QDX PA modification. I want to have the possibility of output power setting.?

The modification just replaces the L14 by some resistor network and switch. There is also a combined 1uF+10nF capacitor from PA transformer center tap to the GND.

I used 3 position switch and some resistor combinations to have the desired output power:

3Ohm (3x 1Ohm resistor) - about 4W output
14.2Ohm (the resistors above -3 Ohm- plus two resistors 5.6Ohm each in series) - about 1W output
64.2Ohm (the resistors above - 14.2Ohm - plus two 100Ohm resistors in parallel) - about 0.1W output

Power measured with the oscilloscope, as such low levels are usually not possible to measure accurately with common SWR/PWR meters.

Re: #qmx Current consumption varies on wide range #qmx

When my power dropped from 5w to 2w I tacked wires onto the drive side of T501 (actually used D503 and D504 empty holes).? Then you can monitor on a scope if the Q503-Q506 are OK.? In my case I saw a lower signal on one pair that was called by a failed BS170.?
Note in my case at turn on until the first transmit there was high supply current because the current firmware does not shut down the PA drive through Q507 until after a first transmit.? So if you see a high initial current that drops after a transmit cycle it points to a PA (BS170) issue

Re: QMX dead

Good to know Karl! Thought that might be so. The main issue is really RX sensitivity. I checked the Config this morning with Putty and
all is normal. With so many mixing signals bleeding through and the native higher noise floor with SDR, it would need to be sensitive
enough to overcome these issues. I did an A/B with my QCX Mini and although I'm happy to see the QCX is very usable, the QMX is
about as deaf as I am at 68. Funny thing, I could swear that I hear the RX background noise when I'm TX'ing on CW. It doesn't seem
to be muting. Strange. All bands look 4-5W out except 20 meters at 2.5W. My C405 was missing, so I put in a generic disk 22pf I had.
Maybe this is an issue. Unknown without a schematic. We shall see if we can get "there" from "here. 73's Bob

Re: QMX build for [40m/30m] , [20m/17m] & [15m/12m/10m] #qmx

Nick,

Your idea is spot on,? I think. It allows for establishing a BP width tailored to the multi-band cases. One downside is that a 2 pole HPF (one inductor, one capacitor) will have a rather shallow response slope. Another is the cost of course.

?I would also recommend terminating the HPF with a load resistor. The Tayloe detector has an interesting input impedance property according to Dan Tayloe himself: elevated impedance at or close to the clock frequency, declining to very low values at frequencies removed from the clock.?

Literature on this aspect of the Tayloe detector is virtually nil.

A resistor might tame that property somewhat.

Having run some simulations of re-banded LPFs I'm now looking at the Rx filtering, and am wondering if would be possible and beneficial to modify that. As it stands the Rx filtering appears to be a single band-switched series resonant circuit - that runs between the Rx port of the antenna switch and the balun at the mixer input. A possible problem with it is that (by definition) if a single band setting is narrow enough to be doing any good then it might not be wide enough to allow band sharing, especially on the higher bands where Rx NF is more important.

However the Tx LPFs are already providing good attenuation above the wanted band. So the Rx might be OK with some switched high-pass filters at that place instead. These would comprise a single series C and a single parallel L. The mux for the series caps already does what is needed. So to make it work would just need the switched Ls to be reconfigured as parallel components to ground. Has anyone looked in to this?

Re: Source for T30-17

Mike,

Let's see how fast John KC9ON can count toroids.? If all the builders?here stock up on account of your message, there are going to be some tired fingers from John's nice?prices and deep stock.? And I'll need to rearrange the parts cabinet where I keep my toroids.

And a note to the unwary -- John's shipping costs are a little high, but if you process your order using Amazon Pay, it can save a substantial amount on postage.

If you've been paying attention here you'll know that the high band and mid band QMX's will be using T30-17 toroids. If you want to get a jump on building one before Hans starts kitting them, I found that John at has T30-17 in stock. He has plain ones for about 41 cents but if you search you'll find some with wire already wound for 25 cents each. We're hams after all, who wouldn't remove wire from a toroid to save 16 cents a pop. Anyways, John shipped them fast and I had them in a couple days. They are from Micrometals btw!

Re: #qmx Current consumption varies on wide range #qmx

Ok John, thank you - that's the first what I'll do this evening :-)

Re: #qmx Current consumption varies on wide range #qmx

Frank, recheck the solder joints at T507 and also make sure C526 has
not been damaged.

That is another one of my problems: There is no output power measurable (with standard Powermeter).

Measuring with scope shows only abt. 200 mVpp with slightly differences between the bands. :-/
