BTW, going to wind the toroids for my 30m kit tonight and it'll be doneGood luck. Don't forget: the wire thickness is a bit too thick and so winding 35 turns on the inductor that is in series with the crystal is a bit difficult. In my build of the kit, I wound only 27 turns and it still worked perfectly so don't worry too much about it, that inductor is non-critical. If you have a 50-ohm dummy load (two 1/4-watt 100-ohm resistors in parallel would do fine) and can view the waveform across it on an oscilloscope, you will find you can measure these low output powers very accurately. 6.3V peak-to-peak corresponds to 99mW. 0.000073 de Hans G0UPL Http://www.hanssummers.com/qrsskit |

Speaking of winding the toroids... I found that the finished toroid matched the holes in the pc board best when I wound the toroids like this: -? Hold the toroid so that the two sides (the "flat" sides of the toroid) are parallel to the floor. -? Start winding the wire by inserting it Down into the hole from the top of the toroid, leaving an inch or so of wire sticking up.? (This is your first turn.) -? Continue adding turns by winding in a counter-clockwise direction to get the desired number of turns. So the winding rule for these toroids is Down / Counter-clockwise. There is probably an industry standard for designating this, but I have never seen it. Have fun! 73, ed - k9ew This will give you the best fit of the finished toroid on the pc board. Hi All,

I am building?the 30M QRSS and one of the interim checks is to see if
the circuit is oscillating at 10.140 MHz.
?
I am using my FT-450 to check for oscillation, cw mode, and I do not detect
any noise there or anywhere +/- 200 Hz.
I decided to check voltages with my meter - one side of the crystal shows
voltage and the other side shows zero. Is the zero V reading?normal on one
pin of a crystal if there is a voltage on the other side? If not, then may I
assume the crystal is probably something I need to replace?

The oscillator signal may not be strong enough for
you to hear it . Take an old test lead ( or just a piece of wire ) with a banana
plug and put it in the center of your antenna connector and then bring the end
of that lead near your crystal . You should be able to hear it then
.

Crystals "normally" , unless they have been
dropped or treated roughly are not a component to suspect first .

I figured it out with some helpful advice from several of my mates.?I
now understand why no DC is shown on my meter, as it shouldn't be there! AC is
what belongs there, and so it is. The crystal is indeed working and I originally
saw it up 4 KHz on USB instead of CW. I added the rest of the parts and now it
is oscillating closer to 10.140.00.
?
I should have a working beacon with a resonant dipole a few feet in the air
later this week.

Well, I had it working for awhile. I listened on my radio at the beacon
working 12 words a minute. Then I think I went too far counter clockwise on R8
whilst adjusting the power out. I added the jumper to slow the dits to 6
seconds. Now when I power up, the call is sent once and at 12 words per minute,
then a pause, then the carrier is keyed up and hangs. Did I fry a component when
I went too far on the R8 adjust?

set mine for 10.140040 mhz and 5hz shift at qrss 6

I plan to mount mine at center of dipole with a
5volt regulator in the box. I will send up 12 rg59 cable tv coax with f
connectors. I wonder how temp stability will be.

Newt , not being familiar with building the kit , I wonder
if you were using a dummy load or the same load doing all of the tests ?
?
If it is not something in the way the ID is configured ,
it could be some RF getting back into the transmitter , especially if you
switched from a dummy load to an antenna .
?
If you are still showing RF output , you probably haven't
hurt anything in the final . It is running pretty easy at the 5-6 volts shown
.

You say the carrier is keyed up after your call is sent at 12wpm, but then just hangs.? Here are some things to check: 1)? If you listen to the carrier on your receiver, do you hear a very slight shift in frequency occasionally (it should change frequency by a few *cycles* whenever the voltage on pin 3 of IC1 changes)?? If you can hear that frequency shift, it's working. 2)? If you don't hear that, measure the voltage on pin 3 of IC1 with a DVM (black lead to ground).? It should be toggling occasionally from 0 to 5V.? (You *are* using a 5-6V supply, right?) 3)? Make sure the twisted wires on C3 aren't shorted together.? (If they were shorted, you would see the signal voltage on pin 3 of IC1 on L1.) 4)? Check all your solder connections while you're at it; it only takes one bad connection to ruin your day. 5)? Check the voltage on the "Q3 side" of R6.? It should be between 0 and supply voltage. 6)? Check the voltage on the "Q3 side" of L2.? It should be a little bit lower than the supply voltage. 7)? I'm glad everything is working well! Having things mounted directly at the centre of a dipole is a great way to not lose any milliwatts in your feed or tuning system! (Provided your dipole is trimmed right of course). I like it. In the past when I've done this with a simple QRSS receiver I built (see ) the temperature stability wasn't great, though it remained perfectly usable. One good idea if you plan to hang it outside in the open, would be to enclose the beacon circuit in polystyrene and then put the whole thing in the box. The ploystyrene ultimately won't stop the temperature drift but it will drastically slow it down so you won't notice it so much. One of my beacons ( ) ran in my attic for 6 months. I had a thermometer in the attic too, and recorded temperatures over that 6 month period all the way from below freezing to over 40C. The beacon was above the insulation layer. In the summer the attic was behaving like a greenhouse (definitely, the weather never really gives us 40C temperatures in the UK hihi). The beacon frequency used to drift up and down slowly every 24 hour cycle, and a longer drift over the months. The total excursion was within a 30Hz range. But most importantly, whenever you saw the thing on a grabber, it was always looking horizontal. Is there a site that keeps track of real time 30m QRSSThere is a QRSS Knights clipboard which is supposed to be kept up to date, but isn't very. Most activity is announced on the QRSS Knights mailing list. I would recommend every active QRSS'er to join this list, and announce themselves. Congratulations to all who have recently announced their kit completion and getting on air! I have a page on my website about the kit and I have a section there, showing some photos and comments from builders. If you have anything to add, please email me. I strongly recommend everyone who is active on air with the kit, join the Knights QRSS group and announce your activity there. The link is: . Going forward, this Knights list is the best place to announce your activity, and any experiments you do with QRSS e.g. antennas, new mode experiments, propagation, etc etc. My suggestion is that we keep this forum for discussion of the kit itself - e.g. any difficulties people have with it, or successes, or modifications people make and would like to share. By all means, tell us when you get your kit on air, and how it goes! But don't neglect the QRSS Knights list which should be the main place to announce your activity! This is just a suggestion: this is your forum and a democracy! Steve G0XAR is frantically putting together the new kits, so we can start to offer them again (same price). We have a waiting list of over 30 people. We'll also be producing 40m and 80m versions. So kit announcements will be here too.
