Re: Difficulty after loading ssb firmware beta 1-01-03 on QMX+
I failed to mention that a did a factory reset in both versions and that no stations can be heard through
the receiver. The menus are completely traversable. My gut makes me think that the stored settings are?
now corrupt and confusing the the two firmware versions. I would think that a factory reset would
default the settings according to it’s respective version, in both parameters ordering and values. |

If you want help printing the cases I can make a few. On Wed, Mar 26, 2025, 6:21?PM Erik Larson via <kd7ykq=[email protected]> wrote:

Maybe a conflict with one of your settings?? (there shouldn't be such a thing, but there are still unknowns in the new version...)
Try a Factory Reset, which will restore original factory settings.
Note that updating firmware keeps existing settings intact, so doing a 'factory reset' may help either firmware version.

SSB QMX FIRST Contact
I was excited to try SSB on my QMX but my microphone was in my home QTH Michigan. I ordered the electret element that Hans recommended and assembled a microphone from spare parts. About $20. I downloaded 1_01_003 hooked up my 20M 1/4 wave vertical and looked for a POTA station to call. My first call was to a station in IL. I am in FL and got a 55.? My second call was a station in Al and got a55. Now I can slow down and do calibration. What a blast! Mike Krieger |
Difficulty after loading ssb firmware beta 1-01-03 on QMX+
I was excited to load the beta SSB firmware on my working QMX+ Transceiver. It was originally?
running version 1-00-27 very well. ?The SSB firmware loaded apparently fine and booted up.
however it appears that something is wrong with the receiver side while the transmitter provides
normal CW output. ?I see some sort of noise pulsing at random in the audio output and see led
burst on the S meter. ?In my process of troubleshooting I tried to return the QMX+ to it’s original?
configuration by loading the 1-00-27 firmware which loaded but demonstrated the same results?
As the 1-01-03 firmware. ?Multiple reload attempts resulted in the same. I am at a loss as what to
do next. It seems that something went awry in the initial loading process. Any ideas? |
Very simple QMX software request
In operating the QMX+ with a non-resonant antenna and a manual tuner, it is unavoidable not to get the 'S' in the display to the right of the frequency from time to time. The 'S' just looks like some feature which has been turned on, but one quickly learns that it is an error message since the transmitter has shut down due to high SWR. By the way this is a very nice feature compared to e.g. the QDX and it has probably saved a lot of BS170's already.
?
But my wish is that the 'S' could be made more visible - for instance that it would blink on and off - thus alerting the operator that something is wrong.

Re: QMX+ Strange Audio Artifact - Help, Please...
Jeff - you meant C504, right? Not C604?? :-)
?
I can handle replacing C504 and D502, I'm pretty sure. Looks like I can get a C504 from Mouser for $0.29 providing I have the right part number (512-SS14), plus shipping - ughhh. If that's not the right part number, please let me know. As far as the tantalum capacitor C504, not sure about a Mouser part number on that one. If you have a number then I could get both from the same supplier and save a bit on shipping.

Re: QMX+ Strange Audio Artifact - Help, Please...
C604 is the easiest to remove and test. ?If that is ok, then it’s most likely one of the three transistors. ?If you have a scope you can look at various points to see what is amiss. ?Without that you are left with blindly replacing parts. ?No shame in that!

With all the BS170's removed, the Diagnostics screen shows the transmitter voltage at 10.9 volts. Ludwig says it should be close to 0 volts, but maybe that is with good BS170's.Hello Steve, Diagnostics should show PA voltage near 0 when in RX mode or PTT ON only (no key pressed or key "P" pressed). The PA voltage should be high in TX mode (key "T" pressed). It's clear for good BS170 installed and the driver signals to the BS170 are ok.
?
It should be the same when no BS170 is installed. A totaly open Drain of Q507 may go to a different value like Stan wrote. But the Drain is connected via R508 and R509 to GND and via R525 and R526 to GND. The situation should be close to good BS170 are installed and not switched on for transmitting.
?
If you see 10.9 V in RX mode something is wrong, Q507 is broken or the voltage to the gate of Q507 is wrong or there is a solder accident around Q507. Please leave Terminal - Diagnostics. This will turn on PA voltage (for some reason) or try to turn it on. Check voltage at S, G and D of Q507. If all values are nearly the same, differences are only a fraction of a volt you have a high probability of a broken Q507.

Re: Available Hand Mics for QMX SSB ?
Hey (other) Don!
About the Group 5 handset:
No problem on readability. In fact they are probably a bit more "punchy" :-|
Yes, the mic is not operating at full output but I had to reduce mic gain to below 50 nonetheless. No pre-amps, environmentally stable, and all that. And I already had it in hand. Part of an old "what's that under the table" swap meet purchase. New in the box meant as a replacement I should imagine.
Aside from reducing the mic gain there was no other modification to the radio.
Even better would be an old military PRC-152 handset but that would take some modifying. Undoubtedly a bit lighter but truthfully I like the heft of this beast.
Although this does NOT fit in my pocket!
I prefer CW anyway. But it was fun.
