Re: A couple of new 12V power options
Using an entire TalentCell power bank on the QMX+ ....will it fit ?
There are 3 basic 12V TalentCells available with and without a USB jack YB1203000, size (25mm x65mm x105mm), 190g, 3000mAh? YB1206000, size (28mm x85mm x145mm), 360g, 6000mAh YB1208300, size (39mm x80mm x138mm), 500g, 8300mAh No problem with the 3000mAh size which is more than adequate to power up and use the QMX+. As far as adding a 10W Amplifier, the added cost and weight of extra battery power is just not worth it and neither is the extra few watts. I you must carry a backup battery, pack a spare power cell and plug it into the QMX+ when needed. Use the spare volume in the QMX+ for other things like a Tuner.? Remember that non-functioning transceivers usually occur due to intermittent connection to the 12V source (and bad SWR). Make sure you use the Upper rotary encoder to turn the QMX+ "ON" and "OFF". 73 Kees K5BCQ |

So far no luck finding the source.
My TX bias is almost twice what its supposed to be but I have yet to find a bridge or anything that could be causing the increased load. |
Re: QMX+
#160m
Hello Dan I believed that 160m operation, at 1.8 to 2.0 MHz, was on the borderline of what could be successfully be achieved when the 1N4007 diode is operated as a PIN diode. At some point, as frequency lowers, the 1N4007 starts rectifying (normal application) rather than behaving as a PIN diode; this recification appears as a high level of 2nd harmonic (and other even harmonics) which is unfiltered since one of the 1N4007 is after the filter (between filter and antenna). So this is the problem as the frequency goes down.? Furthermore there would likely be other changes required such as increasing the value of the RF blocking chokes, much higher than 47uH, and probably the ferrite mixture used in the binocular output transformer would not be suitable for as low as 160m and for higher frequencies, I thought a higher permiability mix would be required for 160m.? My tests on QDX had appeared to confirm that 160m was borderline. Certainly 630m and 2200m are far south of the border. But 160m didn't look OK either.? When it came to 160m on QMX+, I decided to initially try it anyway, on the existing schematic, existing diodes, existing 47uH RF chokes and existing transformer mix (type '61 material, BN61-202). Try it and measure and see how it went.? I was surprised (and not a little pleased) that 160m operation on QMX+ was very good, even with the '61 transformer and 47uH inductors. Power output, PA efficiency and harmonic content were all within normal ranges.? 73 Hans G0UPL On Mon, May 20, 2024, 10:48?AM Daniel Walter via <nm3a=[email protected]> wrote:

Re: Kit Builder Tip - Enamel Wire Cleaning
On thin enameled wire, I use an electric arc cigarette lighter. It practically blasts the enamel off. I do find that a quick rub with some extra fine sandpaper cleans off the residue on the metal, but it's much less effort that taking the enamel off with the sandpaper alone.? Then just tin it and away you go.? Thicker enameled wire is harder to do with this method, as the thick copper wire conducts away a fair bit of heat. But it works. Hold the wire with needle nose pliers. 73, Gwen, NG3P? |

Hans,
Great work as usual. Those sorts of things pop-up with any new product release when it gets in the hands of a few hundred people. They will find amazing and creative new ways of 'breaking' things that the designers never thought to do. At my place of employment we can put-out a new firmware release every week or two but what slows that to every two or three months is all of the regression testing that needs to be done across the different hardware releases and models. As the QRPLabs products are more for the experimenter and 'those who dare go where seldom others follow' I think that most of us are not expecting perfection with every new software release. I am amazed at your work output and I suspect that you are always fiddling around with different attempts to do something unique. It's probably a good thing that they do not let you have a soldering iron on an airplane or to trail out a 200 meter long wire through a gap in the door seals so you can test things out. -- Tisha, AA4HA |
CW auto character space.
Firstly, With v18 firmware CW is a pleasure to use and no significant clicks or thumps.
I built and used a WB4VVF ACCU keyer, exactly as the link on the Operating Manual for many years, and then another keyer with auto character spacing so that is what I have become accustomed to. On the QMX when I have Auto Space set ON, I'm sending quite a few errors, but OFF cw keying is normal and error free. Have others found this? Is the config setting inverse? Rich G4PCE |
Re: QMX+ purchase now or wait to see if there are any hardware updates.
It¡¯s a shame the QMX+ does not incorporate the 10W linear PA that I purchased in advance for the QSX a looong time ago. I would have thought much more resilient than the BS170 PA system that can¡¯t take more than 12v. I would have bought a QMX+ like a shot if this Linear could have been included as all the band switching and LPFs which are needed are in this new QMX+.
Guess I shall continue with my multiband U3s¡¯s (LF, HF, and VHF with 5 W PA Tx and transceiver versions), QDX mini (80-10m) for now, (with linear gathering dust). 73 Ken G4APB |
QMX+ Dev Board
With the availability of a new dev board add-on, how should we integrate our code into the existing firmware?
Although the firmware is closed source, it would be beneficial to have the option to develop our own version. This could involve either building from scratch or utilizing a precompiled library to add custom features. Additionally, it would be advantageous to have the capability to sign our code on QRPLab¡¯s server. Any thoughts on this approach? |

Hi Ronan When a factory reset is required (for example, when coming from earlier versions), the firmware should do it automatically.? 73 Hans G0UPL On Tue, May 21, 2024, 2:55?AM Ronan Cantwell via <ronancantwell=[email protected]> wrote: It's always a good day when there's a QMX firmware release in the morning emails. It's always a good day when there's a QMX firmware release in the morning emails. Why do these updates always come out on my busiest days though...? ?
One note: While a factory reset might not be essential for those doing incremental updates, it may be for those jumping from much earlier versions.? Looking forward to trying this out shortly.? Cheers, Ronan MM0IVR? |

QMX+ purchase now or wait to see if there are any hardware updates.
The new QMX+ is very exciting. Since it is based on the original QMX architecture I suspect it should be fairly refined for its first Version. Am Deliberating on whether I should order one immediately or wait to see if there might be any future updates on the PC board. Hans does amazing work and I suppose this particular version of the QMX as the QMX+ maybe nearly glitch free. I definitely like the form factor of the QCX + ?being used for the QMX+.
Now do I wait for the reviews or should I just jump on one. I have successfully built four transceivers designed by Hans and they all work beautifully. |
For sale Unbuilt QMX mid band
Up for sale is a unbuilt QMX mid band board version 4.? Includes black case.
Included is a unbuilt 20 watt dummy load at NC. Received this a few days ago but am finding the challenge will be too great for me to build due to very shaky hands - old age. Price is 195.00 CDN shipped to anywhere in Canada.? Sorry I'm not able to ship to the US or anywhere else in the world. Local pick up would be great but think I'm dreaming a bit?
