Chuck, I would seek some common denominator in your rig. These kits sound great. Sounds to me like you have an inpendance mismatch in your external audio monitoring.?

Re: QMX and power bank PD

You need a trigger board or cable. Just make sure to plug it in to your PD power bank first, so it will make the negotiation before plugging into the radio.

Re: mission impossible? QRP labs QMX power supply boards

Hello Jerry

Chris wrote:? "Are the PCM1804 failures down to momentay voltage spikes?"
Hans replied:? "There's nothing to indicate or suggest this."

There are lots of PCM1804 failures though, would be nice to get to the bottom of that. My impression from following this forum is that PCM1804 failures are mostly on the QMX, not on the QDX which has linear regulators.? I could be wrong in that.? If true that at least indicates something, though is by no means definitive.

It's wrong. I also thought like you, however I was not informed by my team until recently, that QDX had been failing their pre-shipment testing. It seems that our testing of QDX and QMX+ Rev 2 picks up issues with PCM1804 but testing with QMX does not (needs improvement). So it appears that the PCM1804 problem is not caused by the SMPS on QMX, because it affects QDX also (which has linear supplies). This indicates PCM1804 is a separate unrelated issue.?

QMX and power bank PD

Is the QMX itself in any way capable to negotiate the required voltage with the power bank PD?
In other words is a 12V trigger cable required or not?
?
I feel more comfy with a trigger cable as it steers away from any negotiating.

Beautiful work on the 3D printed case BUT: ?I was doing some testing with my QMX+ outside of the case and with any transmission the RFI interference caused problems that disappeared when I put it back into the case. ?You might want to cover the inside of the case with copper foil if you find you have problems. ?The metal factory case is metal for a reason.

Re: 50W Amp - no output #50w #problem

Hi Roland,
?
I suggest starting with the YouTube video from NA5Y:
?
Several tests can point you to the problem area, even if you do not have an oscilloscope.? An RF probe like this one can be used to verify RF presence:
?
You can build one if you have the parts in our parts bin:
?
A short between D1 and the R2/R3 junction would indicate a solder bridge problem around that area.? Verify that the parts are installed correctly and that there are no solder bridges in that board area.? Unfortunately, that means removing the board from the heatsink.? Be sure to do the short-circuit tests when reinstalling the board.

Re: Severe QMX+ audio distortion

It seems to me that "severe" and "awful" are extreme adjectives that deserve comparison.? "Awful" compared to what?? For example, Thomas Witherspoon often praises the audio quality of the Penntek TR-45 Lite. In comparison, I find my QMX (same audio circuits as QMX+) to sound better than my TR-45, and less tiring to operate.? To what field-portable QRP rig are you comparing the QMX+ ?? (Anans and Flexes are probably not fair comparisons.)

Thanks Paul! I found it in the morning light….

Re: Orientation of D33 on QCX-Mini Rev3 PC

Good morning/evening Nick. Yes, I’ve downloaded the assembly manual for PCB Rev 3 (document version 1.13 published 14-Mar-2023) and was at page 38. I was also using a pair of June 1956 eyeballs (first version) at midnight, to try and spot what turned out to be right there in front of me all the time. This morning, after reading your reply, I saw the abundantly clear and obvious colour pic showing correct orientation.?
How did that show up overnight???

Thank you….oh boy…

Hi Bruce; yes I’m following Rev 3 assembly instructions.

Re: 50W Amp - no output #50w #problem

Hi Aki,
?
I removed C3 and learnt, that it is okay.
Resistance? between R2/R3 and D1 is zero, it is conductive anyway, also when C3 is removed.
?
So I reinstalled C3.

Re: QMX+ with Macbook Air (Sonoma OS)

Hi and merry xmas all.
?
I've been running Maclogger for years now it's simple to set using the Kenwood TS480 settings.?
?
I use it with all my QMX's and QCX's using USB-C, no adaptors required.
It's a "pay for" app but I think it's well worth it.

Brent, I’m assuming that you’ve actually downloaded the QCX Mini Rev 3 assembly manual from the QRP Labs website?
If so all the information you need is on page 38, including photographs. 73 Nick G0OQK

Don't I remember a diode symbol on the PCB, showing where the anode and cathode go? Wait, that's on a QMX and a QDX. QCX is older, but I'd expect the same...

I’ve searched until I’m blue in the face…. Closest I could find was a builder’s note for Rev2 PCB, to orient striped end of the body of D33 in the hole closest to the edge of the PCB. ?
Is that correct for Rev3 also? ?
Thanks, Brent

Re: QMX+ with Macbook Air (Sonoma OS)

Hello Joe,
?
?in a terminal, with?

?

ls /dev/cu.*

you should find one like /dev/cu.usbmodemXXXXX

?

Last time i connect my qmx, i find this one "/dev/cu.usbmodem21101" .

And in order to be sure that's the right one, you could launch:

screen /dev/cu.usbmodem21101 9600

and press "Enter", you will go in the shell interface of your Qmx+
You could use this device name into your favorite application.

If you don't have?"screen" installed on your system, you can do it with "brew install screen".
brew is a tool to manage other tool () and close the gap between linux world and MacOs world.

Re: QMX+ with Macbook Air (Sonoma OS)

Joe,

Stan had it right: the QMX, when connected, presents a "virtual" serial port that works cross-platform. Most modern devices, whether running OSX/Windows/Linux or even iOS/Android, come with only USB ports (of whatever variety). "S" is for serial.

<PEDANTIC 3/4 truths follow:>Mac's run OS X which is based on Mach Unix, not Linux. I believe most of the userspace software that makes a Mac go is from the BSD world, rather than the GNU software generally used by the Linux kernel. But these are all systems that conform broadly to the IEEE POSIX standard which generally reflects the design of Unix, a trademarked creation of Bell Labs. So your Mac is definitely a descendant of "the Unix standard." (And so is your iPhone!) And serial connections (tty's!) are some of the most fundamental I/O concepts that standard contains.</PEDANTIC>

When I plug the QMX into my ancient (ANCIENT) Mac, it shows up in the terminal via `sudo dmesg | grep QMX` and is also visible as both an input and output sound device when I clock on the speaker icon for sound controls. Go to System Preferences -> Sound to see it easily. Then you'll know you have a working USB cable and that the Mac is seeing the QMX.

To figure out which Serial port it is offering, you can try decoding the "dmesg" output. Or, as Dan suggested, you can use the terminal to try doing an `ls /dev` before you plug it in and an `ls /dev` afterward. What new devices are present? On my box, there are two:

```
/dev/cu.usbmodem4201
/dev/tty.usbmodem14201
```

My guess is these are the handles my Mac is providing to access the QMX today.

I'm presently trying to install putty on my ancient Mac in the hopes of testing it out. It's taking forever (over an hour so far) and throwing warnings that my OS is too old. I'll report back if I get it going. For what it's worth, my default way to install putty is to use homebrew (). After installing homebrew (instructions on homepage), you should be able to get putty just using the shell command "brew install putty".

(On my Linux device it shows up as /dev/ttyACM0 and I can putty right in. Thank you for giving me the excuse to finally power up the QMX at home and install the latest firmware!)

To speak to your real question, though, I haven't tried any Mac software for controlling the QMX. I've toyed with a few applications under Linux, but not been crazy about any of them.

Re: QMX+ with Macbook Air (Sonoma OS)

Joe - I use a Mac mini with my rigs. I have a QMX mid-band and recently sold a QMX+. Both worked fine on the Mac mini - no special Serial to USB device needed. Simply the port on your QMX via USB over to the Mac. Software-wise, I use WSJT-X for FT8 and my logger is MacLoggerDX. Both of those programs have no problem seeing (and controlling) the QMX rigs, although not at the same time. If you look at the devices shown in the /dev directory, you should see stuff like /dev/cu.usbmodem.......
?
My QMX connects as device: /dev/cu.usbmodem1437601
Other devices (like my Winkeyer USB, my TS-890, my KX3, etc. are very similar. You just need to find the one that is specifically the QMX. And by unplugging it, running the list, plugging it back in, and re-running the list, you will find it. Once you have that particular "device" number it will stay, unless you plug the QMX into a different USB port on the Mac. Then start over... :-(
