We do it because we find it cool, we enjoy it, it's interesting, we learn from it and it makes us happy. The exact details vary from one of us to the next.?

I'm not sure of the seriousness of the need for VT220 monitor, but cannot serial port software emulation of the VT220 accomplish the necessary if needed?
I cut computing teeth on the VAX line of computers, and used both hardware and software VT100/VT220 over the years (even the old HyperTerm provided with early Windows worked sufficiently).? PuTTY also offers emulation.
