The answer is: how long is a piece of string? Hans has tested the
units at infinite SWR, both open and short, without failure. I
think the failure issue is if the antenna has a very high Q and is
off frequency by the exactly right (wrong?) amount, so you get a
resonant voltage amplification effect that exceeds what the
transistors can handle. I would guess that at that point the SWR
meter would read over 2, so my sage advice would be to "Keep it
under 2, and check it with a meter that uses resistors rather than
transformers, so that while testing the radio is never presented
more that 2:1 and the resistors damp any resonant effects".
