No need to build "everything", just what you need.
Getting components is very easy now, there has never been a better time. Cost will be low if sourced properly.
If you are going to build stuff then you may as well build stuff that is useful and practical.?
Look at the comments on here where people are using a commercial transceiver to tune up the ATU and antenna system because their auto tuner might take too long and damage the finals. Then they switch in their cheap auto tuner. There's backward thinking, are they going to take a commercial rig out portable and set up the antenna system with that before switching over to the QCX mini or whatever ?
Someone else illustrated the point I made when he commented that he could have lost the finals on his rig but fortunately it was current limited. That was because the auto ATU was hunting too long to try and get a match.
